Sonographic measurement of the fetal thymus: Relationship with maternal obesity.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of maternal obesity on the size of the fetal thymus. METHODS: The study population consisted of 138 pregnant women who were divided into two groups based on their body mass index (BMI): Normal-weight group (n = 97; BMI: 18-25 kg/m2 ) and obese group (n = 41; BMI: ≥ 30 kg/m2 ). All participants underwent routine second-trimester prenatal ultrasound (US) screening at 20-25 weeks of gestation. Differences in US measurement of fetal thymus, fetal anthropometric measurements, subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness, fetal weight, ge

Neonatal congenital lung tumors - the importance of mid-second-trimester ultrasound as a diagnostic clue.

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis for primary lung masses in neonates includes a variety of developmental abnormalities; it also consists of the much rarer congenital primary lung tumors: cystic pleuropulmonary blastoma (cystic PPB), fetal lung interstitial tumor (FLIT), congenital peribronchial myofibroblastic tumor (CPMT), and congenital fibrosarcoma. Radiologic differentiation between malformations and tumors is often very challenging. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to establish distinctive features between developmental pulmonary abnormalities and primary lung tumors. MATERIALS AND ME

Prenatal diagnosis of caudal regression syndrome and omphalocele in a fetus of a diabetic mother.

The caudal regression syndrome is defined as total or partial agenesis of the sacrum and lumbar spine, frequently associated with other developmental malformations (orthopedic, neurological, genito-urinary, gastrointestinal…). Prenatal diagnosis is possible through fetal ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A case of fetal caudal regression syndrome with omphalocele from a diabetic mother is presented, demonstrating the sonographic, MRI, CT and X-Ray features diagnostic. We will also discuss neonatal findings, risk factors and prognosis of this condition.

Evaluation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety and Imaging Issues Associated with the Occlusion Balloon Used during Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital diaphragmatic hernias can be successfully treated by fetoscopic tracheal occlusion (FETO), a minimally invasive procedure that may improve postnatal survival. The endoluminal balloon utilized for FETO contains a metallic component that may pose possible risks for the fetus and mother related to the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The objective of this study is to evaluate MRI-related imaging and safety issues (magnetic field interactions, heating, and artifacts) for the occlusion balloon used in FETO. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using well-established techniques,

How to use… Hip examination and ultrasound in newborns.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) ranges from a clinically detectable dislocation of the hip to radiologically diagnosed hip abnormalities. It is caused by both antenatal and postnatal factors. The Neonatal and Infant Physical Examination Screening Programme recommends that newborns should undergo a hip ultrasound (USS) when risk factor or clinical features suggestive of DDH are present. The aim of hip ultrasonography is to detect DDH early and prevent late complications through early treatment. Here, we discuss how to use hip examination and USS in newborns.

Fetal cardiac cine magnetic resonance imaging in utero.

Fast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) led to the emergence of 'cine MRI' techniques, which enable the visualization of the beating heart and the assessment of cardiac morphology and dynamics. However, established cine MRI methods are not suitable for fetal heart imaging in utero, where anatomical structures are considerably smaller and recording an electrocardiogram signal for synchronizing MRI data acquisition is difficult. Here we present a framework to overcome these challenges. We use methods for image acquisition and reconstruction that robustly produce images with sufficient spatial and

A Rare Case of Caudal Regression Syndrome in a Foetus of Non-Diabetic Mother: A Case Report.

BACKGOUND: Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) is an uncommon disorder in which there is abnormal development of the caudal end of the foetal spine along with many associated anomalies. Manifestations of this syndrome can vary from the absence of a few terminal coccygeal segments to complete lumbosacral agenesis. Its overall incidence is 1 in 60000 live births. It is more commonly seen in infants of diabetic mothers, with a 200-fold increased risk as compared to the general population. CASE REPORT: We present a case of CRS in a foetus of a non-diabetic mother and discuss the role of radiology in

How Does Imaging of Congenital Zika Compare with Imaging of Other TORCH Infections?

The acronym TORCH is used to refer to congenital infections, such as toxoplasmosis, other infections (such as syphillis, varicella-zoster, and parvovirus B19), cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus. The classic findings in patients with TORCH infections include rash in the mother during pregnancy and ocular findings in the newborn. Zika virus has emerged as an important worldwide congenital infection. It fits well with other congenital TORCH infections since there is a rash in the mother and there are commonly ocular abnormalities in the newborn. TORCH infections are recognized to have neu

Fetal and maternal manifestations of tuberous sclerosis complex: Value of fetal MRI.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder characterized by benign hamartomas in various organ systems of the body. Prenatal screening of fetuses of mothers affected with TSC using ultrasonography (US) may detect cardiac lesions. Fetal US is not sensitive for evaluation of the brain. We describe brain MRI findings in a fetus with cardiac rhabdomyomas identified on prenatal screening US. Postnatal brain MRI at 5 days of age demonstrated fetal MRI findings without significant added information. Fetal MRI is the imaging modality of choice for evaluation of cerebral manifestations of T

Zika Virus Associated with Microcephaly.

A widespread epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was reported in 2015 in South and Central America and the Caribbean. A major concern associated with this infection is the apparent increased incidence of microcephaly in fetuses born to mothers infected with ZIKV. In this report, we describe the case of an expectant mother who had a febrile illness with rash at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy while she was living in Brazil. Ultrasonography performed at 29 weeks of gestation revealed microcephaly with calcifications in the fetal brain and placenta. After the mother requested term

Exome sequencing reveals two novel compound heterozygous XYLT1 mutations in a Polish patient with Desbuquois dysplasia type 2 and growth hormone deficiency.

Desbuquois dysplasia type 2 (DBQD2) is a rare recessively inherited skeletal genetic disorder characterized by severe prenatal and postnatal growth retardation, generalized joint laxity with dislocation of large joints and facial dysmorphism. The condition was recently described to result from autosomal recessive mutations in XYLT1, encoding the enzyme xylosyltransferase-1. In this paper, we report on a Polish patient with DBQD2 who presented with severe short stature of prenatal onset, joint laxity, psychomotor retardation and multiple radiological abnormalities including short metacarpals, a

Initial Experience With Propranolol Treatment of Lymphatic Anomalies: A Case Series.

Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are congenital lymphatic lesions that impose significant and costly morbidities on affected patients. Treatment options are limited due to incomplete understanding of LM pathobiology. Expression of an activated β2-adrenergic receptor has been described in LM tissue, suggesting that this pathway may contribute to the clinical manifestations of LM. We hypothesized that propranolol, a β-adrenergic receptor antagonist, might improve symptoms of patients with LMs and lymphatic anomalies. A retrospective chart review of patients treated with propranolol as an adjunct th
