Undiagnosed mirror syndrome with maternal hypoxemia onset during an emergency cesarean section: A case report.

RATIONALE: Mirror syndrome is a rare pregnancy condition in which maternal edema is associated with fetal hydrops. Because of its rarity and overlapping symptoms, this condition is often misdiagnosed as another pregnancy complication. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old pregnant Japanese woman presented with sudden 7.5-kg weight gain, leg edema, and increased d-dimer level. DIAGNOSES: Ultrasound revealed polyhydramnios and fetal hydrops, and findings of maternal edema and blood test results were suggestive of Miller syndrome. Although, the patient was initially misdiagnosed due to a lack of info

Negative pressure pulmonary edema: a case report and literature review.

Negative pressure pulmonary edema (NPPE) is a form of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema triggered by a swift increase in negative intrapleural pressure due to upper airway obstruction and represents a potential cause of acute respiratory failure. This study documents a case of NPPE post-endotracheal extubation subsequent to general anesthesia. The patient, a young female, underwent a "laparoscopy-assisted unilateral salpingectomy" under general anesthesia for an ectopic pregnancy. Immediately post-extubation, the patient exhibited a sudden decline in oxygen saturation and tachypnea. Pink frothy

Preeclampsia and eclampsia: Enhanced detection and treatment for morbidity reduction.

Preeclampsia is a life-threatening complication that develops in 2-8% of pregnancies. It is characterized by elevated blood pressure after 20 weeks of gestation and may progress to multiorgan dysfunction, leading to severe maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The only definitive treatment is delivery, and efforts are focused on early risk prediction, surveillance, and severity mitigation. Anesthesiologists, as part of the interdisciplinary team, should evaluate patients early in labor in order to optimize cardiovascular, pulmonary, and coagulation status. Neuraxial techniques are safe i

Anesthesia for Cesarean Delivery in a Patient With Spondylocostal Dysostosis: A Case Report.

Spondylocostal dysostosis (SCD) is an inherited skeleton growth disorder characterized by abnormalities of the vertebrae and ribs. Individuals are susceptible to kyphoscoliosis and pulmonary complications, which may be exacerbated by respiratory physiologic changes in pregnancy. We present a case of a parturient with severe kyphoscoliosis and restrictive lung disease who received a modified rapid sequence induction and transabdominal plane blocks for cesarean delivery. Our case describes the safe administration of general anesthesia for cesarean delivery and reviews the anesthetic consideratio

Airway management and pulmonary aspiration during surgical interventions in pregnant women in the 2nd/3rd trimester and immediate postpartum - a retrospective study in a tertiary care university hospital.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of pulmonary aspiration during general anaesthesia, but the incidence of this complication is not well defined. METHODS: We performed a retrospective database review in a tertiary care university hospital to determine the incidence of pulmonary aspiration in pregnant patients undergoing endotracheal intubation, with and without Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI), as well as face-mask ventilation and supraglottic airway devices. We included Patients in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy and immediate postpartum undergoing surgical proce

Management of Labor in Pregnancy Complicated with Previous Tuberculosis with Giant Lung Bullae and Intrauterine Growth Restriction: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading infectious cause of mortality in developing countries. In pregnancy, TB may cause complications including intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and vertical transmission of TB. Recurrent TB infection can cause permanent damage to lung tissue, and formation lung bullae can occur. Giant lung bullae may be harmless in normal conditions, but cause concern if the patient is pregnant. CASE REPORT A 22-year-old G1P0A0 woman at 9 months of pregnancy came to our institution due to labor pain. She also presented with active TB from 1 month before admission. C

Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformation Unmasked by Pregnancy: A Review of Pulmonary Arteriovenous Malformations and Cardiovascular and Respiratory Changes in Pregnancy.

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations are abnormal, direct communications between the branches of the pulmonary artery and pulmonary veins, but without pulmonary capillaries between them. During pregnancy, PAVMs can enlarge and become symptomatic, causing even serious complications like haematothorax. To recognize the PAVM that becomes symptomatic in pregnancy, one must be able to distinguish the patient's symptoms caused by developing complications of PAVM, as in the case we present, from physiological changes accompanying a healthy pregnancy, including their degree in relation to the stage o

Combined extracorporeal CO2 removal and renal replacement therapy in a pregnant patient with COVID-19: a case report.

Background. Pregnant women are at high risk of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) complications, including acute respiratory distress syndrome. Currently, one of the cornerstones in the treatment of this condition is lung-protective ventilation (LPV) with low tidal volumes. However, the occurrence of hypercapnia may limit this ventilatory strategy. So, different extracorporeal CO2 removal (ECCO2R) procedures have been developed. ECCO2R comprises a variety of techniques, including low-flow and high-flow systems, that may be performed with dedicated devices or combined with continuous renal rep

Fatal Association of Eisenmenger Syndrome and Severe Preeclampsia.

Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is the end stage of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with congenital heart disease (CHD), which can occur in patients with large, unrepaired cardiac shunts (ventricular septal defects (VSD), atrial septal defects (ASD), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA)). Pregnancy in Eisenmenger syndrome is uncommon and is poorly tolerated due to physiological changes that may lead to a risk of rapidly progressive cardiopulmonary decompensation, thrombotic complications, and sudden death. For these reasons, it is advisable, in this context, to avoid pregnancy or to u

Pulmonary embolism complicated by tamponade revealing metastatic lung cancer in a woman pregnant with twin: about a case report.

UNLABELLED: Lung cancer can be revealed by thromboembolic complications. Its association with pregnancy is becoming more frequent due to the increasing number of smoking women. The care of a pregnant woman with cancer is quite delicate because it requires finding a balance between the treatment of the mother and the potential foetal risk. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report the case of a 38-year-old patient, with a twin pregnancy of 16 weeks, complicated by proximal and distal peripheral venous thrombosis of the left lower limb under low molecular weight heparin therapy at a curative dose.

Non-functioning Pituitary Macroadenoma Resection in Twin Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) are rare in females of reproductive age. We present the case of a 37-year-old pregnant woman in her second trimester with a diagnosis of symptomatic pituitary macroadenoma with twin pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed a well-defined macroadenoma compressing the optic chiasm, thus necessitating surgery. The patient underwent transnasal transsphenoidal resection of the tumor under general anesthesia. Anesthesia management posed challenges due to concurrent considerations of pregnancy and neurosurgery. Induction, maintenance, monitoring
