INTRODUCTION: Cesarean section is one of the most common obstetric procedures performed worldwide under spinal anesthesia which is a commonly practiced rapid, simple, and safe method. Vomiting and nausea are frequent side effects of many surgical procedures. However, with cesarean sections performed under regional anesthesia, this issue occurs even more frequently. The existing evidence regarding the prevalence and associated factors of intraoperative nausea and vomiting is inconsistent. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence and associated

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) represent a significant health concern worldwide, with women facing distinct challenges in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of these conditions. In India, hypertension is a prevalent cardiovascular (CV) risk factor, affecting nearly one-third of adults, and women experience a disproportionately high burden across all age-groups. The CV continuum, which spans from risk factors to CV events and ultimately to heart failure (HF), demonstrates how the progression of CVD impacts women at each stage differently due to gender-specific mechanisms like hormonal in

BACKGROUND: Airway management in morbidly obese obstetric patients is challenging, with increased risk of difficult ventilation, failed intubation, and maternal morbidity. By focusing exclusively on pregnant patients with a BMI 40 kg/m2, this study aimed to quantify the frequency and types of airway complications occurring during cesarean section under general anesthesia, stratified by obesity class. The secondary objective was to identify risk factors for difficult mask ventilation, difficult laryngoscopy, and difficult airway.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included all 315 pregna

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in developed countries, complicating 4-11 % of pregnancies. Women with CVD are at increased risk of maternal complications, including heart failure and arrhythmias, as well as adverse fetal outcomes such as preterm birth and perinatal mortality. Traditionally, care for pregnant women with CVD has been fragmented across specialties, leading to discontinuity and missed opportunities for optimization. To address this, recent European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines strongly recommend the implementation of

BACKGROUND: Intrathecal morphine is the mainstay for post-Caesarean multimodal analgesia but is associated with important side-effects. Novel ultrasound-guided abdominal wall fascial plane blocks are proposed as intrathecal morphine alternatives, but evidence of effectiveness is conflicting. We compared the analgesic effects of fascial plane blocks with those of intrathecal morphine after Caesarean delivery.
METHODS: We sought trials comparing the analgesic effects of intrathecal morphine with quadratus lumborum (QL), transversus abdominus plane (TAP), or erector spinae plane (ESP) blocks aft

Cardiac arrest during pregnancy is a rare but potentially catastrophic event, often requiring rapid, coordinated, multidisciplinary intervention. Neuraxial anesthesia, while generally considered safe and commonly used in obstetric settings, may be associated with severe cardiovascular complications. Among the proposed mechanisms, the Bezold-Jarisch reflex has been implicated in cases of sudden bradycardia and asystole following spinal anesthesia. We report the case of a 39-week pregnant woman who was admitted for urgent cesarean delivery after failed induction of labor. The patient had a histo

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) often presents for the first time in pregnancy, or, in patients with a history of ITP, pregnancy can trigger a relapse. ITP in pregnancy is often mild, leading to minimal or no symptoms; however, treatment may be needed if thrombocytopenia becomes severe, if bleeding occurs, or in anticipation of delivery and neuraxial analgesia. To facilitate the diagnosis of ITP in pregnancy, we present a systematic approach that allows clinicians to first consider urgent pregnancy-related thrombocytopenic conditions such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy or thrombotic thro

BACKGROUND: Cesarean section is one of the most common surgical procedures. Currently, there are many analgesic methods available after cesarean section, but the optimal analgesic method after cesarean section is not clear.
METHODS: A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was used to search Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases. Outcomes included time to first postoperative request for analgesia, postoperative medication-supplemented analgesia, pain scores at four postoperative time points, postoperative complications (nausea and vomiting, itching, and level o

Turner syndrome (TS) is associated with short stature, cardiac abnormalities, and musculoskeletal deformity, which pose unique obstetric anesthesia challenges in the small proportion of TS patients who go through spontaneous or assisted pregnancy. There is very limited data available on the anesthetic management of these patients. This case report presents the management of a 32-year-old gravida 2 para 0 (G2P0010) patient with mosaic TS undergoing labor induction at 37 weeks of gestation. An indwelling epidural catheter placed under ultrasound guidance provided adequate labor analgesia with ab

IMPORTANCE: Prominent ear deformities can negatively impact self-esteem and social well-being. Surgical otoplasty is effective but is associated with complications, longer recovery, and altered ear contours.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of non-surgical otoplasty using Aptos threads for the correction of prominent ear deformities and other auricular deformities.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational study.
SETTING: Single-center study conducted at AL-GOUSOUS Medical Center, Amman, Jordan.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 250 patients (500 ears) aged 7-67 years (mean age: 30.6 ±

Background and Objective: Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS) encompasses a continuum of abnormal placentation conditions associated with significant maternal and fetal morbidity. Management of PAS requires coordinated cesarean hysterectomy. Associated morbidities include blood transfusion, coagulopathy, and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Accurate prediction of ICU admission allows for enhanced multidisciplinary management, coordination of care and utilization of resources. Scoring systems exist in other surgical specialties that can predict the likelihood of ICU admission, but these have no

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension in pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as prolonged hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, and high maternal mortality. The Obstetric Comorbidity Index (OB-CMI) assesses maternal risk for these outcomes; however, its predictive power in patients with pulmonary hypertension remains unknown. This study evaluates maternal and neonatal outcomes in patients with pulmonary hypertension and examines whether a higher comorbidity burden is associated with longer hospitalization and ICU admission.

Background Obstetrical emergencies require rapid, coordinated responses to mitigate adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Hospitals use standardized emergency codes to ensure quick staff mobilization. Limited data exist on implementing obstetric emergency codes in the Middle East. This study evaluates the effectiveness of obstetrical emergency code activation (Code Pink) in a tertiary care hospital, focusing on its impact on maternal and neonatal outcomes. Methodology This retrospective cohort study was conducted in Latifa Women and Children Hospital, Dubai, UAE, a tertiary care center, betw

BACKGROUND: General anesthesia with endotracheal intubation is standard in obstetric patients due to the risk of aspiration. However, endotracheal intubation carries procedure-related risks, prompting interest in laryngeal masks as alternative or rescue devices. Evidence supporting their use in postpartum tubal ligation remains limited.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a high-risk obstetric center, including patients who underwent postpartum tubal ligation between 2012 and 2024. Patients were grouped according to the airway device used: laryngeal mask or endotracheal int

A 33-year-old woman at 37 weeks of gestation presented with progressive dyspnea and cough, initially misdiagnosed as pneumonia. Imaging revealed a large (>15 cm) anterior mediastinal mass compressing the pulmonary arteries and bronchi, along with a significant pericardial effusion. Echocardiography confirmed tamponade physiology. Given the high risk of cardiovascular collapse during labor, a multidisciplinary team, including obstetrics, cardiology, anesthesia, and cardiothoracic surgery, proceeded with emergent cesarean delivery under general anesthesia, followed by subxiphoid pericardial wind

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital vascular disorder characterized by the classical triad of cutaneous port-wine stain (capillary hemangioma), varicose veins, and hypertrophy of soft tissues and bones. KTS with uterine involvement is extremely uncommon. We present a 27-year-old pregnant woman with KTS complicated by uterine venous malformation. Comprehensive management was provided by a multidisciplinary team after 12 weeks gestation diagnosed with KTS. The patient wore full-length compression stockings and received low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) for thromboprophylaxis.

Introduction Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are major contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality, predisposing to significant cardiac complications during cesarean section. Hemodynamic fluctuations under anesthesia further increase the risk of myocardial ischemia, arrhythmia, and pulmonary edema. Continuous intraoperative monitoring may help identify early hemodynamic instability and improve maternal outcomes. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the frequency, pattern, and predictors of maternal cardiac complications in women with HDP undergoing cesarean section and to dete

We report an unusual case of a 26-year-old female patient diagnosed with primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma (ES) at 16 weeks' gestation. She had vertigo, vomiting, and worsening visual disturbances. MRI showed a solid-cystic mass in the left occipital area with a midline shift. Neurosurgical resection was performed under general anesthesia, with careful intraoperative management to ensure maternal stability and fetal safety. Unique considerations in our anesthesia technique for pregnancy were the management of cerebral blood flow, increased intracranial pressure, and avoiding teratogenic medic
