Anencephaly in a triplet pregnancy: Unprecedented spontaneous reabsorption in-utero and subsequent normal delivery via c-section: A rare case report.

Multiple pregnancies are infrequently encountered, with the incidence of spontaneous triplet pregnancies estimated at approximately 1 in 7000 pregnancies. Triplet gestations are recognized for their propensity to bring about a spectrum of pregnancy related complexities, encompassing fetal structural abnormalities, neurological anomalies, disturbances in amniotic fluid levels, preterm labor, and suboptimal neonatal outcomes. Anencephaly is a serious congenital defect where the brain and skull do not fully develop, often leading to a poor prognosis. It's a preventable neural tube defect (NTD) wi

Association between intravenous fluids during labor and primary postpartum hemorrhage: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: There is a major research gap relating to the impact of intravenous (IV) fluids administration during labor on maternal and neonatal outcomes. It is biologically plausible that a relationship between volume of IV fluids and primary postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) exists. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate whether the administration of high-volume IV fluids during labor (≥ 2500 mL) increases the risk of primary PPH and other adverse outcomes for women with a term, singleton pregnancy, in comparison to low-volume IV fluids during labor (<2500 mL). MATERIAL AND METHODS

Monochorionic-triamniotic triplet pregnancy following artificial reproductive technology: Report of a rare case in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: Monochorionic-triamniotic (MCTA) triplet pregnancies following artificial reproductive technologies are uncommon. We report a case in which one of two transferred embryos differentiated into an MCTA triplet. This study aimed to investigate the potential factors contributing to MCTA triplet pregnancy. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old woman underwent her second frozen embryo transfer with hatching blastocysts, which resulted in the detection of an MCTA triplet on ultrasonography. She delivered by cesarean section at 32 weeks of gestation, resulting in the birth of three live male infants.

Temporal ultrasound findings in the first trimester of a dual fetal demise occurring in a monochorionic diamniotic twin gestation.

Single fetal demise in monochorionic gestations in the 2nd and 3rd trimester is associated with adverse outcomes for the co-twin. We present a case of single demise in a monochorionic gestation in the 1st trimester with evidence of subsequent hemodynamic aberrations in the co-twin, supportive of feto-fetal hemorrhage occurring early in gestation.

Prediction of preterm birth using machine learning: a comprehensive analysis based on large-scale preschool children survey data in Shenzhen of China.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is a significant cause of neonatal mortality and long-term health issues. Accurate prediction and timely prevention of PTB are essential for reducing associated child mortality and morbidity. Traditional predictive methods face challenges due to heterogeneous risk factors and their interaction effects. This study aims to develop and evaluate six machine learning (ML) models to predict PTB using large-scale children survey data from Shenzhen, China, and to identify key predictors through Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) analysis. METHODS: Data from 84,050 mo

Perinatal outcomes and growth discordance of triplet pregnancies based on chorionicity: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The worldwide occurrence of triplet pregnancy is estimated to be 0.093%, with a natural incidence of approximately 1 in 8000. This study aims to analyze the neonatal health status and birth weight discordance (BWD) of triplets based on chorionicity from birth until discharge. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. We reviewed a total of 136 triplet pregnancies at our tertiary hospital between January 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021. Maternal and neonatal outcomes, inter-triplet BWD, neonatal morbidity, and mortality were analyzed. RESULTS: Among all cases, the rates of intrauter

Interpregnancy interval following missed abortion and the risk for preterm birth.

OBJECTIVE: Short inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) of <18 months following a live birth, has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcome. This study aimed to evaluate whether a short IPI following a medically treated missed abortion (MA) poses similar perinatal risks in a subsequent pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: The retrospective analysis included patients with history of an MA at up to 10 weeks of gestation, treated with misoprostol (pgE1) only, and with a documented subsequent live pregnancy (2010-2022). 1110 Patients were allocated into two groups: IPI ≤18 months and IPI >18 months. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, and echocardiography findings in twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence.

BACKGROUND: Twin reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence is a rare complication of monochorionic multiple gestation pregnancies, in which the pump twin provides hemodynamic support to a nonviable co-twin (acardius). Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to detect pump twin abnormalities, particularly brain ischemia, prior to fetal intervention to interrupt umbilical blood flow to the acardius. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the imaging findings of TRAP sequence pregnancies in a large series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center retrospective review was performed of all TRAP sequence

Dichorionic triamniotic triplets after two blastocysts transfer underwent multifetal pregnancy reduction: two case reports and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The increase in the rate of multiple pregnancies in clinical practice is associated with assisted reproductive technology (ART). Given the high risk of dichorionic triamniotic (DCTA) triplet pregnancies, reducing DCTA triplet pregnancies to twin or singleton pregnancies is often beneficial. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports on two cases of DCTA triplet pregnancies resulting from two blastocyst transfers. Given the high risk of complications such as twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancies, patients have a strong desire to p

Selective termination: a life-saving procedure for complicated monochorionic gestations.

Monochorionic twin pregnancies are a subset of twin pregnancies that face potential complications related to a shared circulation between the fetuses. These complications are related to anastomotic placental vessels connecting the cardiovascular systems of the two fetuses, which can result in significant sequela if one twin experiences intrauterine death. The sudden cardiovascular collapse in this scenario leads to a massive blood shift away from the healthy co-twin, significantly jeopardizing its life and long-term neurodevelopmental outcome. Such conditions include selective fetal growth res

Assessment of Fetal Exposure and Elimination of Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances: New Evidence from Paired Serum, Placenta, and Meconium Samples.

Multiple pieces of evidence have shown that prenatal exposure to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is closely related to adverse birth outcomes for infants. However, difficult access to human samples limits our understanding of PFASs transport and metabolism across the human placental barrier, as well as the accurate assessment of fetal PFASs exposure. Herein, we assess fetal exposure to 28 PFASs based on paired serum, placenta, and meconium samples. Overall, 21 PFASs were identified first to be exposed to the fetus prenatally and to be metabolized and excreted by the fetus

Divergent growth of the transient brain compartments in fetuses with nonsyndromic isolated clefts involving the primary and secondary palate.

Cleft lip/palate is a common orofacial malformation that often leads to speech/language difficulties as well as developmental delays in affected children, despite surgical repair. Our understanding of brain development in these children is limited. This study aimed to analyze prenatal brain development in fetuses with cleft lip/palate and controls. We examined in utero MRIs of 30 controls and 42 cleft lip/palate fetal cases and measured regional brain volumes. Cleft lip/palate was categorized into groups A (cleft lip or alveolus) and B (any combination of clefts involving the primary and secon
