Surface-associated Candida auris recovery during five intensive care unit cluster responses: a retrospective descriptive study with structured evidence mapping.

BACKGROUND: Surface-associated persistence of Candida auris can complicate infection prevention in healthcare settings, particularly when reusable devices and mobile care items move across patient-care areas. During cluster responses, targeted environmental sampling may help identify surface and equipment categories for infection-prevention review. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed environmental culture records collected during five C. auris cluster responses in the surgical and medical intensive care units of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital between August 2024 and May 2026. Patient,

Candida auris in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Candida (a.k.a.Candidozyma) auris is a healthcare-associated yeast that has attracted attention due to its increased antimicrobial resistance and ability to spread rapidly within the healthcare environment. Infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have risk factors such as broad spectrum antibiotic exposure, prematurity and congenital heart disease that predispose them to serious infection with C. auris. Consequently, there have been global reports of C. auris outbreaks in NICUs associated with high mortality. The clinical presentation of late onset sepsis with C. auris is i

Clinical characteristics, healthcare-associated exposures, and antifungal susceptibility patterns of Candida auris colonization and invasive infections: a retrospective observational study at a single center in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: Candida auris (Candidozyma auris) differs from other yeast species by its ability to persist for prolonged periods on environmental surfaces and human skin. This feature facilitates person-to-person transmission and contributes to healthcare-associated infections and outbreaks. In this study, both invasive C. auris infections and colonization were evaluated together. We aimed to compare clinical characteristics and healthcare-associated exposures between invasive and colonized cases and to assess antifungal susceptibility patterns in invasive infections. METHODS: A total of 79 pat

Oral Candida Colonization Among Patients With Head and Neck Cancer Undergoing Radiotherapy and Its Impact on the Severity of Oral Mucositis: A Prospective Observational Study.

Objective Oral mucositis is a common complication of radiotherapy (RT) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), often resulting in reduced treatment tolerance and impaired quality of life. Radiation-induced mucosal injury predisposes patients to Candida colonization, which may influence the early onset and severity of mucositis. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and temporal pattern of oral Candida colonization in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy and to evaluate its association with the severity of radiation-induced oral mucositis while accounting for r

Candida auris: Epidemiology and Antifungal Strategy.

Candida auris is a recently emerged fungal pathogen that causes severe infections in healthcare settings around the globe. A feature that distinguishes C. auris from other fungal pathogens is its high capacity to colonize skin, leading to widespread outbreaks in healthcare facilities via patient-to-patient transmission. C. auris can persist on skin or in the surrounding environment for extended periods of time, and it exhibits greater antifungal resistance than other Candida species. These factors pose major obstacles for the prevention and treatment of C. auris infection. Recent reports have

Activity of rezafungin against Candida auris.

The increasing prevalence of candidemia and invasive candidiasis infections caused by Candida auris represents a global health risk. Such infections are difficult to treat as they are often multidrug-resistant and are linked to high rates of mortality. Rezafungin is a second-generation echinocandin with antifungal activity against a range of Candida species, including wild type, and azole- and some echinocandin-resistant isolates. Its stability and prolonged half-life permit less frequent dosing compared with other echinocandins, leading to high front-loaded exposures and potential earlier myc

Creating a prediction model for invasive candidiasis in the intensive care unit using a case control design: a European multicentre approach.

PURPOSE: Invasive candidiasis (IC) has a high attributable morbidity and mortality in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Current diagnostic tools lack sensitivity, introduce delay or have not been validated for regular use. As early treatment has proven vital for survival, multiple prediction models have been proposed but have not been validated for multinational implementation. In this study we propose to find factors predisposing the ICU patient to develop IC. We hope to develop an alternative prediction model using a large international dataset. METHODS: Using ICU-acquired IC as pr

Invasive Candida infections in solid organ transplant recipients between 2008 and 2020.

Contemporary data on the epidemiology and outcomes of invasive candidiasis (IC) in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTr) are limited. This retrospective multicenter cohort study, nested within the Swiss Transplant Cohort Study, describes the epidemiology and outcomes of IC in SOTr from 2008 to 2020. Among 4755 patients identified, 205 (4.3%) had 262 episodes of IC. One-year cumulative incidence of IC was 2.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.4, 3.3) and decreased during the study period (P = .046). Candidemia was less frequently encountered (0.67%, 95% CI, 0.47, 0.94) than intra-abdominal (

Detection of serum anti-candidalysin IgG by indirect ELISA: a novel auxiliary tool for diagnosing invasive candidiasis in a preliminary pediatric study.

Invasive candidiasis (IC) is the most common fungal infection in clinical settings, yet early diagnosis remains challenging. Candidalysin, a key virulence factor in invasive infections, exhibits site-specific pathogenicity. Our study identifies candidalysin as a serodominant antigenic peptide and reveals significantly elevated serum anti-candidalysin IgG levels in IC across diverse anatomical sites, suggesting its potential as a novel diagnostic biomarker. To evaluate this, we developed an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to quantify serum anti-candidalysin IgG. The assay was

Epidemiological and microbiological characterization of Candidozyma auris (Candida auris) isolates from a tertiary hospital in Cairo, Egypt: an 18-month study.

Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) has emerged as a significant multidrug-resistant pathogen. Among 140 antifungal-resistant Candida spp. isolates, 120 were identified as C. auris using chromogenic agar, VITEK 2, and MALDI-TOF. Most cases (60%) were males, and 59% were aged ≥ 60 years. Bloodstream infections were predominant (60.8%), followed by respiratory (20.8%), urinary tract (15%), and other sites. Liver transplantation (35.8%) was the most common underlying risk factor, followed by post-COVID-19 (30.8%) and cancer (25%). All isolates exhibited thermotolerance, halotolerance, anae

Comprehensive profiling of lysine lactylation in Candida albicans and exploratory analysis of fluconazole tolerance associations.

UNLABELLED: Candida albicans is the primary pathogen of invasive candidiasis in most regions worldwide, but the therapy options for C. albicans infections are limited, and drug tolerance further exacerbates the treatment challenges. Lysine lactylation (Kla), a recently identified post-translational modification (PTM), is observed in numerous organisms; however, the role of Kla in C. albicans remains unknown. Hence, we report the first proteomic analysis of this specific modification in C. albicans and discuss its potential roles in drug tolerance of C. albicans. Altogether, 7,233 lactylation s

Rapid diagnostic tests to inform clinical decision-making for antifungal stewardship in the ICU: a qualitative study with NHS staff, patients, and their legal representatives.

BACKGROUND: Invasive candidiasis is a fungal infection of the blood or organs that is associated with high morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Current diagnosis is based on blood culture, which typically takes 2 days to confirm the presence of Candida, and longer for differentiating the species and sensitivities to antifungal drugs. Administration of antifungal treatment is time-critical, hence critically ill patients considered 'at-risk' of Candida infection are often started on antifungal treatment pending test results. However, many of these patients may not have empirical t
