A new Candida species, Candida paratropicalis, was recently described. Four cases of infections due to C paratropicalis are reviewed in detail and an additional five cases are reviewed to establish the clinical relevance of this species of yeast. Candida paratropicalis was isolated from blood and several other body sites. Although the isolates tested were sensitive in vitro to amphotericin B and fluocytosine, significant morbidity and mortality were associated with the infections.

We evaluated the efficacy and safety of ceftriaxone in 50 adults with serious infections, usually giving 1 g every 12 h. Of the 35 patients who could be evaluated for clinical efficacy, 15 had failed on previous therapy, 15 had nosocomial infections, and all but 1 had underlying diseases. Sixty-seven asthmatic individuals treated with either beclomethasone diproprionate or flunisolide were sequentially evaluated for up to 32 months to determine the incidence of oropharyngeal candidiasis as well as laboratory parameters which might be predictive of this complication. Throat cultures and measurements of Candida antibody by immunodiffusion and radioimmunoassay were performed and compared over time and treatment groups. Unlike other studies, pre-treatment Candida precipitins did not predict increased risk for clinical thrush nor did quantitative determinations of Candida antibody.

Infection of the urinary tract due to Candida albicans is an uncommon but well-described complication of modern therapeutics. Despite the rarity of this infection, culture of properly collected urine yielding C. albicans requires an explanation. The spectrum of infectious complications during the first six months after 101 consecutive renal transplants was examined. The most common sites of infection were the lungs, the urinary tract, and the surgical incision. The causative organisms were similar to those in nonimmunosuppressed postsurgical patients. A case of Candida costochondritis seen initially as a chest wall tumor in a narcotic addict is reported. Bone and cartilage are rare sites of Candida infection from whatever cause. Since 1973, only 6 cases of Candida costochondritis have been reported; 5 were complications of thoracic operations and the other, of intravenous hyperalimentation. Treatment by a one-stage en bloc resection of chest wall, and reconstruction by rib graft and Marlex mesh resulted in cure in our patient, without complications.

Neonatal osteomyelitis presents with few clinical signs despite multiple sites of involvement. Four cases of osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus or Candida albicans were encountered in a neonatal intensive care unit. Chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMCC) is a clinical syndrome characterized by persistent and recurrent Candida albicans infections of the mucous membranes and skin often associated with immunodeficiency. Precipitins to mannan and cytoplasmic antigens of three Candida species were determined in an unselected series of 289 non-pregnant women. 4103 cases suspected of mycoses were analysed as to sex, age and site of disease and 3891 were proved cases. This group formed 50% of total mycoses or 13-93% of all dermatoses recorded in the Government General Hospital, Madras, during the period of study.
