Place-Based Structural Disadvantage, Lethal Police Violence, and Adverse Birth Outcomes Among Black Birthing People.

Structural racism and lethal police violence shape community environments, particularly in urban and urban-adjacent contexts, and may influence reproductive health. While disparities in birth outcomes among Black populations are well documented, fewer studies have examined how these structural and state-linked exposures jointly pattern risk for adverse birth outcomes. Using 2020 National Center for Health Statistics natality data and Mapping Police Violence data (2015-2019), we analyzed associations between county-level lethal police violence, a multidomain. Structural Racism Exposure Index (S

Regional and socioeconomic inequalities and factors associated with low birth weight in Ghana: a multilevel analysis of the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major public health challenge globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Ghana, socioeconomic and regional inequalities in birth outcomes persist. This study examined LBW prevalence, socioeconomic and regional inequalities, and factors associated with LBW using nationally representative data. METHODS: A secondary analysis of the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) was conducted using a weighted sample of 5,768 live births to women aged 15-49 years. Multilevel binary logistic regression was used to assess fa

HRD: an integrated multi-omics resource for human reproduction and development.

Human reproduction and development span a continuum shaped by genetic, molecular, and environmental factors. However, relevant data remain dispersed across public repositories and the literature, limiting systematic integration, analysis, and reuse. We developed the Human Reproduction and Development Database (HRD; http://www.inbirg.com/hrd/), an integrated multi-omics resource that organizes publicly available data relevant to multiple reproductive, pregnancy, and developmental contexts. HRD version 1.0 contains 814 omics records, including 432 bulk transcriptomic, 144 single-cell or single-n

Recurrent implantation failure: a registry-corroborated, age-stratified definition and pragmatic five-tiered management algorithm.

Recurrent implantation failure (RIF) remains a significant challenge in reproductive medicine, imposing substantial emotional, clinical, and financial burden on affected couples. RIF is generally defined as failure to achieve pregnancy after multiple transfers of good-quality embryos, yet progress in the field has been constrained by the absence of a universally accepted definition and by the inherent complexity of investigating the embryo-endometrial interface. Recent evidence has prompted a reappraisal of the factors contributing to RIF, distinguishing it from the mechanistically distinct en

Effects of Paid Family Leave Policies on Intimate Partner Violence in New York City from 2012 to 2022.

INTRODUCTION: Experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV) during the prenatal period can result in maternal mental health challenges, adverse birth outcomes (e.g., pre-term birth and low birth rates), and children's mental, cognitive, and physical health issues (Donovan et al., 2016; Hahn et al., 2018). Access to economic support policies, like state-sponsored paid family leave (PFL), during the perinatal period may be a strategy to reduce financial stress and prevent IPV (Niolon et al., 2017). This paper explores whether living in a state with PFL (i.e., New York) reduces IPV for working mot

Preconception and Early-Pregnancy Serum Metal(loid) Concentrations in Relation to Gestational Glucose Regulation: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Although metal(loid) exposure during pregnancy has been increasingly studied, evidence remains limited on whether serum metal(loid) concentrations measured before conception are related to glucose regulation during pregnancy. In this prospective cohort study, serum concentrations of multiple metal(loid)s were measured during the preconception period and early pregnancy. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) was diagnosed using a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test at 24-28 gestational weeks, and fasting, 1-h, and 2-h plasma glucose (PG) levels were assessed as continuous outcomes. Generalized linea

A Novel Homozygous ZPBP Frameshift Variant Is Associated With Severe Acrosomal Structural Abnormalities in Asthenoteratozoospermia.

BACKGROUND: Experimental disruption of Zpbp homologs in mice causes defective acrosomal biogenesis and male infertility. Human evidence remains limited to a small number of association-based or case-level reports linking ZPBP alterations to abnormal sperm-head or acrosomal phenotypes, without integrated characterization across protein abundance, ultrastructure, sperm chromatin integrity, and proteome-wide changes. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to characterize the genetic, structural, and molecular sperm phenotype associated with a novel homozygous frameshift variant in ZPBP. MATERIALS AND METH

Status of Labor Analgesia as a Felt Need - A Questionnaire-based Survey in Antenatal Women at a Tertiary Care Center in North India.

BACKGROUND: Labor analgesia is recognized worldwide as the right of every laboring woman and the duty of the obstetrician. Although multiple modalities are available, demand for these services remainslow in government hospitals in India. With increasing emphasis on respectful maternity care, this is alarming. Pain relief in labor directly influences maternal satisfaction, choice of mode of delivery, and perceptions of maternity services. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study antenatal women's understanding of labor analgesia in North India, particularly regarding their knowledge of labor analgesi

Assessing maternal nutrition policy and programmatic landscape in India: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal nutrition is fundamental to the health of mothers and children. Over the years, the Indian government introduced several programs and policies to support women's nutrition during pregnancy and improve maternal and child health outcomes. However, significant contextual differences remain in service provisions and access across states. This study explores expert perspectives on factors that impact the implementation and reach of maternal nutrition services in India. METHODS: The study was conducted in two phases. The first phase consisted of contextual mapping through des

Incidental detection of maternal malignancy in non-reportable results from non-invasive prenatal testing: experience in Hong Kong and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) for fetal aneuploidy occasionally yields non-reportable results due to persistent 'noisy' signals, which may indicate occult maternal malignancy. This study investigated the clinical and genetic implications of non-reportable NIPT results, focusing on multiple chromosomal aberrations associated with maternal malignancy, with the goal of developing standardised management protocols for pregnant women with such suspicious NIPT results. METHODS: From 2020 to 2023, women with persistent non-reportable NIPT results were identified and followed up

Impact of Short-Term Fluoride Supplementation in Pregnancy on the Maternal Microbiome, Pregnancy, and Neonatal Outcomes: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction This report presents secondary, exploratory analyses of a double-blind randomized trial originally designed to determine whether fluoride supplementation during pregnancy reduced preterm birth (PTB). The trial was terminated early because of enrollment difficulties and was not powered for its original clinical endpoint. We therefore examined whether randomized fluoride supplementation was associated with oral or vaginal microbiome composition and descriptively evaluated gestational and neonatal outcomes. Methodology In the original double-blind randomized controlled trial, pregnan

The maternal-placental-fetal liver axis: A mechanistic framework for understanding benzene developmental hematotoxicity.

Benzene is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant and a human hematotoxicant and carcinogen. Increasing epidemiological and experimental evidence links in utero benzene exposure to adverse pregnancy outcomes, altered fetal development, and increased childhood leukemia risk. Benzene toxicity is initiated through metabolism into reactive intermediates, primarily by cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) and myeloperoxidase. These enzymes are expressed not only in the maternal liver but also in the placenta and fetal liver, indicating that multiple compartments may contribute to benzene toxicity during pregn
