Longitudinal changes in selected biochemical, hematological, and vital parameters in Gurcu goat kids: effects of age, sex, and birth type.

BACKGROUND: Biochemical, hematological, and vital parameters are important indicators of health status, growth, and physiological adaptation in young ruminants. However, breed-specific longitudinal data for Gurcu goat kids raised under traditional management conditions are limited. The primary objective of this study was to longitudinally evaluate age-related changes in selected biochemical, hematological, and vital parameters in healthy Gurcu goat kids, while sex and birth type were assessed as secondary modifying factors during postnatal growth. METHODS: Twenty clinically healthy Gurcu goat

Elevating dairy delights and nutritional security with calcium enrichment using an innovative calcium curd strip (CCS) validated through animal studies.

BACKGROUND: Calcium deficiency is a widespread concern affecting individuals across all age groups and countries. Curd offers a promising way to fortify nutrients. METHODOLOGY: In order to make calcium-enriched curd as a simple cost-effective dietary intervention to increase calcium intake, this study developed a novel calcium curd strip (CCS). A polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane with immobilized curd bacteria and different calcium carbonate concentrations was used in the CCS. Additionally, Wistar rats were used in in vivo animal investigations to assess calcium bioavailability. RESULT

Increased Lymphocyte Proportions as a Candidate Biomarker for Immune-Related Adverse Events in Patients Treated With Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors and Chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Combination therapy comprising immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and chemotherapy is standard treatment for many cancer types. However, the management of adverse events (AEs) induced by combination therapy is more complicated than that of AEs induced by ICI monotherapy. Although immune-related AEs (irAEs) induced by ICIs and AEs induced by chemotherapy require distinct therapeutic approaches, distinguishing between them can be challenging. Therefore, in this exploratory study, we aimed to investigate whether lymphocyte proportion could serve as a candidate biomarker associated wi

Trends in Hepatitis D Virus Prevalence Among HBsAg-Positive Individuals With and Without HIV in Italy: A Converging Epidemiology.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection has historically been more prevalent among people with HIV (PWH) due to shared transmission routes. Whether HIV status still identifies a subgroup at higher risk of HDV in contemporary settings remains unclear. METHODS: We performed two cross-sectional analyses assessing anti-HDV prevalence among HBsAg-positive PWH enrolled in the ICONA cohort in 2009-2012 and 2019-2023, compared with HIV-negative individuals from the MASTER and PITER cohorts. RESULTS: Anti-HDV prevalence among PWH declined from 19.1% to 12.5%, converging with that obser

Schlafen regulates gastrulation in Xenopus laevis early embryonic development and exhibits immune tissue-specific expression in adult frogs.

Schlafen genes are conserved regulators of cell proliferation and play a pivotal role in immunity and host defence, yet their function during vertebrate development remains poorly understood. Here, we characterize the expression, phosphorylation dynamics, and function of the single Schlafen ortholog in Xenopus laevis (slfn13) during embryogenesis and in adult tissues. Slfn13 protein levels increase markedly around the mid-blastula transition/late blastula, with unphosphorylated Slfn13 predominating during gastrulation and neurulation, while phosphorylated Slfn13 (p-Slfn13) is more abundant dur

High Prevalence of Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity in Guinea-Bissau-Results From a Nationwide Study Carried Out From 2022 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are rising rapidly in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Guinea-Bissau, nationwide data are scarce. We aimed to estimate the multi-regional prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D), obesity, and hypertension and examine associated risk factors within this resource-limited context. METHODS: A multi-regional cross-sectional survey was conducted using a hybrid community- and facility-based sampling approach across urban Bissau, including at the National Diabetes Clinic [CND] and in seven interior regions of the country. Recruitment was conducted between August 3th 202

Jejunal Loop-Preserving and Mesentery-Sparing Reconstruction after Pancreaticoduodenectomy in a Patient with Prior Total Gastrectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) after a total gastrectomy is technically challenging because the proximal jejunum has already been utilized for an esophagojejunostomy. Consequently, reconstruction after PD requires the use of a more distal jejunal segment, and the optimal reconstruction strategy remains controversial. We report a case of a jejunal loop-preserving and mesentery-sparing reconstruction after PD in a patient with a prior total gastrectomy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man with a history of Roux-en-Y total gastrectomy for gastric cancer presented with obstructive ja

Known Unknowns: Unpacking Controversies and Uncertainties in the 2025 Guidelines for Management of Acute Coronary Syndromes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The 2025 ACC/AHA/ACEP/NAEMSP/SCAI Guideline for managing patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is the first major update since the 2013-2015 ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST elevated myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) guidelines. It brings both conditions together into a single framework. This review covers the most important new and revised recommendations and points out where evidence is still lacking. RECENT FINDINGS: New findings show that several significant updates are based on recent large-scale trials. The use of bivalirudin with high-dose in

Isolated Hemichorea-Hemiballismus as the Presenting Manifestation of Thalamic Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Long-Term Treatment Course With Tetrabenazine and Aripiprazole.

Post-stroke movement disorders are uncommon, and hemichorea-hemiballismus is most often associated with lesions involving the basal ganglia or subthalamic region. Thalamic lesions are a recognized but less frequent cause. We report a 78-year-old right-handed woman who developed sudden involuntary jumping and dancing movements of the right foot, which later spread to the right arm. She had no weakness, sensory loss, dysarthria, visual symptoms, headache, or loss of consciousness. Examination showed continuous right-sided hemichorea-hemiballismus with preserved strength and sensation. Non-contra

Optimizing treatment in homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia: Monocentric observational clinical study on efficacy and safety of evinacumab and lomitapide combination.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variants of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor cause homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). Disease-specific treatment options include lipoprotein apheresis and lomitapide, and more recently, the angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3)-targeting monoclonal antibody evinacumab. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of this therapeutic combination in patients with HoFH. METHODS: We report a single-center, real-world clinical experience including 6 patients with HoFH, 4 of whom were pediatric, with persistently elevated LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) (>130 mg/dL),

Utility and limitations of 18F-fluciclovine PET for biopsy targeting in a nonenhancing diffuse glioma with a gliomatosis cerebri-like growth pattern: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-enhanced MRI reflects blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption rather than tumor biological activity, whereas 18F-fluciclovine (18F-FACBC) PET reflects amino acid metabolism independent of BBB integrity. The authors compared regional 18F-FACBC uptake with histopathological and molecular findings in a diffuse astrocytoma, IDH-wildtype, not elsewhere classified, with a gliomatosis cerebri (GC)-like infiltrative growth pattern. OBSERVATIONS: A woman in her 50s presented with headache. MRI revealed a nonenhancing, diffusely infiltrating right parietal white matter lesion. 18F-FAC

ASSOCIATION OF PULMONARY AND CUTANEOUS CHANGES IN COVID-19-RELATED CONDITIONS.

INTRODUCTION: The study of skin manifestations in COVID-19 is relevant due to the possibility of their appearance before the onset of the typical pattern of respiratory lesions, and the typicality of this pattern has changed noticeably with the emergence of new strains of the virus (nosomorphosis), therefore skin manifestations have both early diagnostic and possible prognostic value. AIM: The aim of our study was to identify the relationship between the course of SARS-CoV-2 and its specific features of skin manifestations during the COVID-19 pandemic. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective

Diabetes Insipidus as a Rare Complication of Metastatic Breast Cancer With Pituitary Metastases.

Diabetes insipidus (DI) is a rare but significant and life-threatening complication of metastatic breast cancer, typically arising when cancer spreads to the pituitary gland. This condition results from impaired secretion or action of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or arginine vasopressin (AVP), leading to symptoms including excessive urination and thirst. The posterior lobe of the pituitary and the infundibulum are most susceptible to metastatic involvement due to their direct arterial blood supply, making them more accessible to circulating tumor cells. This phenomenon explains why DI can be a m

Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis as a Rare Complication of a Pancreatic Duct Leak in a Patient Without Cirrhosis: A Case Report.

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is classically associated with liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Its occurrence in non-cirrhotic patients is rare and poorly characterized. Pancreatic ascites, resulting from disruption of the pancreatic duct (PD) or leakage from a pseudocyst, is an unusual cause of ascites in chronic pancreatitis. The enzyme-rich, exudative nature of this fluid can itself cause chemical peritonitis with neutrophilia, mimicking infection. We report the case of a 50-year-old man with alcohol use disorder and chronic calcific pancreatitis who presented with recurren
