We have developed an assay for the detection of Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) based on reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) that is highly sensitive to a broad range of NLVs. We isolated virus from 71 NLV-positive stool specimens from 37 outbreaks of nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis and sequenced the open reading frame 1 (ORF1)-ORF2 junction region, the most conserved region of the NLV genome. The data were subjected to multiple-sequence alignment analysis and similarity plot analysis. We used the most conserved sequences that react with diverse NLVs to design primers and TaqMan probes for the r

BACKGROUND: The outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis caused by a virus are currently one of the health problems having the greatest impact on those living in senior citizen facilities. The objective of this study is that of investigating the causes of the start and contagion of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis caused by a Norwalk-Like virus.
METHOD: At a senior citizen living facility with 141 residents and 71 employees exposed, the relations between the disease in question and different independent variables: personal traits, features of location, date of onset of symptoms, clinical patter

In nine outbreaks that occurred in the Kyushu district between 1988 and 1993, we determined the nucleotide sequences of Norwalk-like virus (NLV) gene fragments amplified by RT-PCR and molecular-epidemiologically analyzed the NLV epidemics. It is known that the NLV strains isolated from nine outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis, were divided into five clusters consisting of two genogroups. Described by the year of outbreaks, the genogroup-1 (Norwalk-like virus group) was prevalent in 1988, 1989, and 1992, the genogroup-2 (snow mountain-like virus group) was detected in 1988, 1989, and 1993. Acute gastroenteritis is a major source of morbidity and mortality among young children in developed and developing countries. Enteropathogenic viruses are regarded as particularly relevant causative agents. Between February 2001 and January 2002, fecal specimens were obtained from German children admitted to hospital with acute gastroenteritis and examined for rotaviruses, Noroviruses, enteric adenoviruses, and astroviruses using (RT-)PCR methods. Of the 59% (129/217) samples positive for > or =1 viral agent, 79% (102/129) carried rotavirus, whereas Norovirus was detected in 35% (45/129), ent

The Wyoming Department of Health investigated an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis among persons who dined at a tourist saloon in central Wyoming during October 2001. Human caliciviruses (HuCVs) were suspected as the etiological agent of the outbreak based on the incubation period, duration of illness, and symptoms observed in ill patrons. A retrospective cohort study demonstrated that ill patrons were 4.5 times more likely to have exposure to drinking water and/or ice than nonill patrons. No food items were associated with illness. An environmental investigation gave evidence that the saloon'

The authors, who are from the Vessel Sanitation Program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), summarize the recent outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE), which occurred on five different cruise ships. Attack rates among passengers ranged from 4% to 13% and among crew members from 0.2% to 3.3%. Subsequent epidemiological investigations by the CDC suggested that the incidence was higher, approaching 19-41% of passengers. Overall there were 21 outbreaks of AGE on 17 cruise ships, of which nine were documented to be due to norovirus, three due to bacterial agents, and nine of

INTRODUCTION: Norovirus (genera; previously "Norwalk-like viruses") of the family Caliciviridae are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis outbreaks. Epidemics commonly occur in crowded community and spread by fecal-oral route through contaminated food, water and direct contact.
AIMS: To determine the incidence and epidemiological role of caliciviruses in nosocomial gastroenteritis outbreaks in hospitals in Hungary.
METHODS: Between November 1998 and April 2002, 277 stool samples of 39 nonbacterial hospital outbreaks reported as "enteritis infectiosa" with unknown etiology from 13 of 19

Noroviruses (NVs) are the most common cause of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis worldwide. An international workshop of 36 people from 5 countries was held on 20-22 March 2002, in Voorhees, New Jersey, to identify barriers to the development of methods for detection of NVs in water and to develop a multiyear research agenda to coordinate efforts to advance the development of methods for detection of NVs. The workshop focused on 3 areas: (1) collection, concentration, and processing of samples; (2) molecular methods for detection and confirmation of NVs; and (3) the detection of infectious NV

From May through June 2001, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis that affected at least 200 persons occurred in a combined activity camp and conference center in Stockholm County. The source of illness was contaminated drinking water obtained from private wells. The outbreak appears to have started with sewage pipeline problems near the kitchen, which caused overflow of the sewage system and contaminated the environment. While no pathogenic bacteria were found in water or stools specimens, norovirus was detected in 8 of 11 stool specimens and 2 of 3 water samples by polymerase chain reaction.

By the end of December 2000, the epidemiological system 'Alert' of the Public Health Institute in Tirane reported an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis. The outbreak involved children in Tirane and in the rural area. In total, 2722 children were seen in Tirane Hospital and 982 (56.4%) were treated for acute gastroenteritis. The age group with the highest morbidity was 0-5 years (89.7%), followed by the 6-9 (6.2%) and 10-15 years age groups (4.1%). The distribution of acute gastroenteritis cases, which occurred along the same water distribution system, suggests a waterborne origin. The nucleic a

We compared real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and a newly developed enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the detection of noroviruses (NoV) in 70 stool samples taken from outbreaks and sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis. The real-time PCR classified more samples as positive than the EIA (26 versus 10) and detected more outbreaks of NoV (six versus two). Real-time PCR offers rapid and sensitive diagnosis for both sporadic cases and outbreaks of NoV gastroenteritis and, by comparison, the reduced sensitivity and specificity of the EIA will result in negative samples having to be tested by P

Gastroenteritis (diseases of the stomach and intestine) is widespread all over the world and one of the most frequent causes of infant mortality in the Third World. In industrial countries, gastroenteritis occurs second to respiratory diseases in children, rarely, however, with any complications.

Norwalk virus and Noro virus are members of the Caliciviridae. These viruses are morphological similarity in each other and shows small round structure. These viruses also are well known as main pathogens of acute infectious gastroenteritis. Clinical features include an incubation period of 24 of 48 hours and illness period of 18 to 72 hours with vomiting and diarrhea in most patients and high secondary attack rates. Oral transmitted infection occurs contaminated water and foods. In our country, outbreak of Noro virus-related gastroenteritis are reported sometimes in hospital and nursing home

We have investigated the incidence of Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) associated with outbreaks of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis in Osaka City, Japan, since April 1996 using reverse transcription (RT)-PCR and electron microscopy methods. From the results of the first 3 years, between April 1996 and March 1999, we previously reported that multiple genetic types of NLVs were detected in 71.9% of outbreaks using RT-PCR with Ando's primers except for one outbreak [Iritani et al., 2000]. However, during the 1999-2000 season, NLV outbreak strains, which could not be detected by RT-PCR with Ando's p

Human caliciviruses (HuCVs) are antigenically diverse. The antigenic relationships among different HuCVs have been difficult to study because HuCVs cannot be passaged in the laboratory. In this study, we describe cloning, sequencing and expression of the viral capsid proteins of three HuCVs that were identified in outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in Virginia in 1997-1998. Yields of the capsid proteins similar to previously expressed recombinant Norwalk virus were obtained using the baculovirus expression system. Recombinant VA97207 capsid protein (rVA97207) and rVA98387, but not rVA98115, fo

OBJECTIVES: Outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis associated with 'Norwalk-like viruses' (NLVs) cause significant health problems in hospitals. Hospital outbreaks in the Stockholm area in 1996 were investigated, in order to identify the magnitude of the problem, the mode of transmission, the effect of control measures and the genetic variability of outbreak strains. Determining the epidemiological and clinical significance involves a broad range of possibilities.
METHODS: Ten hospitals, representing 66% of the hospitals in the Stockholm area, participated in the study, which included 211 wards.

Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs), rotavirus and adenovirus are reportedly responsible from 4 to 42% of non-bacterial acute sporadic gastroenteritis. The incidence of NLVs, adenovirus and rotavirus infections in Indonesia is unclear. A total of 402 symptomatic cases from Indonesian patients with acute gastroenteritis and 102 asymptomatic controls that tested negative for bacteria and parasites were screened for the presence of NLVs, rotavirus and adenovirus using the reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Rotaclone kits and Adenoclone kits. Specific prototype probes were used to a

Norwalk Virus and Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) are reportedly responsible for 2.5-4.0% of nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis (NBAG) worldwide. To help clarify the impact of NLVs on NBAG in Indonesia, stool specimens from 102 patients, 74 with NBAG and 28 with BAG, were screened for the presence of NLVs, using a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. The specimens were subtyped using prototype-specific oligonucleotide probes and were sequenced and compared with published NLV sequences. Of the 102 specimens examined, 31 (30%) were found to be positive for NLVs. Type-speci
