A waterborne outbreak of Norwalk-like virus among snowmobilers-Wyoming, 2001.

In February 2001, episodes of acute gastroenteritis were reported to the Wyoming Department of Health from persons who had recently vacationed at a snowmobile lodge in Wyoming. A retrospective cohort study found a significant association between water consumption and illness, and testing identified Norwalk-like virus (NLV) in 8 of 13 stool samples and 1 well. Nucleotide sequences from the positive well-water specimen and 6 of the positive stool samples were identical. This multistrain NLV outbreak investigation illustrates the importance of NLV as a cause of waterborne illness and should encou

UNLABELLED: The immune system is the body's defense mechanism that uses cells and organs to protect against foreign substances called pathogens. The absence or dysfunction of elements within immune system lead to immune diseases such as severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). SCIDs are hereditary disorders that are characterized and sub-classified by an impaired number and function of T and B cells as T-B + SCID and T-B-SCID. The association between varied SCID phenotypes, including Omenn Syndrome, in clinics has been revealed with the presence of missense mutatinos in RAG1 gene. Here, we aim

[Studies of acute gastroenteritis among infant and young children in a pediatric clinic].

From October 1998 to April 1999, 72 stool specimens from patients of acute gastroenteritis were collected in a pediatric clinic in Urawa city, Japan and were examined for the detection of SRSV by electron microscopy and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Forty-eight (67%) out of 72 were SRSV positives by both tests. In this season, a prevalence of SRSV peaked in December 1998. Among reported clinical symptoms, vomiting was reported more frequently than the other symptoms, such as diarrhea and fever. Furthermore, the diarrhea was intense among children under 1 year old. F

Molecular detection of human calicivirus in young children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis in Melbourne, Australia, during 1999.

Reverse transcription-PCR and sequence analysis identified calciviruses in 32 of 60 stool specimens (negative for other enteric pathogens) obtained from children admitted to our hospital with acute gastroenteritis. The overall annual incidence rate for calcivirus was 9% (32 of 354 children). Molecular analysis identified 30 "Norwalk-like virus" genogroup II (predominantly Lordsdale cluster) and 2 "Sapporo-like virus" strains.

Molecular epidemiology of human enteric caliciviruses in The Netherlands.

Caliciviruses are among the most common causes of gastroenteritis in people of all age groups. These antigenetically and genetically diverse viruses have been grouped into two genera within the family Caliciviridae, designated Norwalk-like viruses (NLV) and Sapporo-like viruses (SLV). To gain more insight in their epidemiology, we have developed a tentative genotyping scheme, which was used to differentiate the viruses detected in a set of epidemiological studies. NLVs and SLVs were detected by generic RT-PCR in stool specimens from 5.1% and 2.4% of cases with acute gastroenteritis for which a

Outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis associated with Norwalk-like viruses in campus settings.

Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) are transmitted by fecally contaminated food, water, fomites, and person-to-person contact. They are a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis epidemics in industrialized countries. NLV outbreaks are characterized by a 12- to 48-hour incubation period; nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for 24 to 72 hours; and high secondary attack rates. NLV infections spread rapidly on college and university campuses because of close living quarters, shared bathrooms and common rooms, many food handlers, popular self-service salad bars in dining halls, and person-to-person contact thro

Characterization of capsid genes, expressed in the baculovirus system, of three new genetically distinct strains of "Norwalk-like viruses".

"Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs), members of a newly defined genus of the family Caliciviridae, are the most common agents of outbreaks of gastroenteritis in the United States. Two features of NLVs have hindered the development of simple methods for detection and determination of serotype: their genetic diversity and their inability to grow in cell culture. To assess the immune responses of patients involved in outbreaks of gastroenteritis resulting from infection with NLVs, we previously used recombinant-expressed capsid antigens representing four different genetic clusters, but this panel prove

"Norwalk-like viruses". Public health consequences and outbreak management.

"Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) cause outbreaks of gastroenteritis and are spread frequently through contaminated food or water. Molecular diagnostics now enables detecting viruses in clinical and environmental specimens, linking of NLV strains causing outbreaks in multiple geographic locations, and tracing them to their sources in contaminated food or water. This report reviews recent advances in NLV detection and provides guidelines and recommendations for investigating NLV-related outbreaks, including specimen collection and disease prevention and control. This report also updates information

A foodborne outbreak of gastroenteritis associated with Norwalk-like viruses: first molecular traceback to deli sandwiches contaminated during preparation.

In March 1998, an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis occurred among students at a Texas university. Overall, 125 ill students sought medical care. Case-control studies revealed that illness was significantly associated with eating foods from the university's main cafeteria deli bar on 9 and 10 March. Stool specimens from 9 (50%) of 18 ill students and samples of deli ham showed evidence of Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) by reverse-transcriptase (RT) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. A food handler who prepared sandwiches for lunch on 9 March reported that her infant had been sick with watery

The epidemiology of enteric caliciviruses from humans: a reassessment using new diagnostics.

In the United States, acute gastroenteritis is one of the most commonly noted illnesses on hospital discharge records and death certificates, yet few of these cases have an etiologic diagnosis. The application of new molecular diagnostic methods has shown caliciviruses (previously referred to as the Norwalk family of viruses or small round structured viruses) to be the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) outbreaks in the United States, and they may emerge as a common cause of sporadic cases of AGE among both children and adults. Novel molecular methods have permitted outbreak stra

Epidemiology of calicivirus infections in Sweden, 1994-1998.

Outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis are frequently caused by caliciviruses. Electron microscopy was used to search for these viruses in fecal samples from patients with acute gastroenteritis. Of 5800 samples collected and analyzed from November 1994 to June 1998, 3700 were associated with outbreaks. A total of 676 outbreaks were analyzed, and viruses were found in 67%. Caliciviruses, usually Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs), were found in 407 (89%) of 455 outbreaks, while Sapporo-like viruses were identified in nine outbreaks, including six that were suspected to include foodborne transmission. The impact of foodborne calicivirus disease: the Minnesota experience.

The first outbreaks of Norwalk virus gastroenteritis in Minnesota were confirmed in 1982. Since then, Norwalk-like caliciviruses have been recognized to be the most common cause of foodborne disease outbreaks, accounting for 41% of all confirmed foodborne outbreaks in Minnesota from 1981-1998. Although laboratory confirmation of caliciviruses in stool samples was not attempted in most of these outbreaks, all conformed to epidemiologic criteria for defining outbreaks of Norwalk virus. Since 1996, the availability of polymerase chain reaction testing at the Minnesota Department of Health has all

Cold weather seasonality of gastroenteritis associated with Norwalk-like viruses.

Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs) are the most common cause of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis in adults, but little is known about their seasonality. The lack of specific diagnostic tools impeded study of these viruses in the past, and surveys using electron microscopy often grouped NLVs with other unrelated viruses. A search of the scientific literature found eight surveys of gastroenteritis, which were conducted for at least 1 year, that specifically identified NLVs. Unpublished data from laboratories of 4 NLV researchers were also used. These surveys, which were conducted in eight countries,

Multi-state outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis traced to fecal-contaminated oysters harvested in Louisiana.

Norwalk-like viruses (NLVs), or small round structured viruses, are known to cause acute gastroenteritis associated with eating contaminated shellfish. Between 1993 and 1996, three oyster-related gastroenteritis outbreaks attributed to NLV occurred in Louisiana. Intensive trace-back and environmental investigations revealed that the overboard disposal of sewage by oyster harvesters into oyster-bed waters was the most likely source of contamination in at least two of the outbreaks. The small infectious dose of NLV, the large quantity of virus particles in stool, and the ability of oysters to co

Major change in the predominant type of "Norwalk-like viruses" in outbreaks of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis in Osaka City, Japan, between April 1996 and March 1999.

In Osaka City, Japan, between April 1996 and March 1999, a total of 350 fecal specimens from 64 outbreaks of acute nonbacterial gastroenteritis were examined to investigate infection by "Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs). By reverse transcription (RT)-PCR, 182 samples (52.0%) from 47 outbreaks (73.4%) were NLV positive. During those three years, the incidence of NLV-associated outbreaks showed seasonality, being higher during January to March (winter to early spring). The ingestion of contaminated oysters was the most common transmission mode (42.6%). The amplicons of the 47 outbreak strains that w

[Magnitude of rainfall on viral contamination of the marine environment during gastroenteritis epidemics in human coastal population].

BACKGROUND: Sewage treatments are not efficient to eliminate enteric microorganisms. Viruses are able to persist and are discharged into the marine environment with treated effluents. Few data are now available on the magnitude and the contributive processes of marine viral contamination. This work evaluates the relationship between the magnitude of rainfall and the viral contamination of the marine environment during winter epidemics of gastroenteritis in human coastal populations. METHODS: A RT-PCR method was used to detect enterovirus, hepatitis A virus, Norwalk-like virus, astrovirus and

Prevalence and genetic diversity of human caliciviruses (HuCVs) in Mexican children.

Human caliciviruses (HuCVs) contain two genera: "Norwalk-like viruses" (NLVs) and "Sapporo-like viruses" (SLVs). The importance of the two genera as a cause of acute gastroenteritis of infants and children remains unknown. Beginning in 1989, a birth cohort of children in Mexico was enrolled and monitored for acute gastroenteritis. A subset of 115 diarrhea stool specimens from 76 children and 66 non-diarrhea stool specimens from 64 children was examined for HuCVs by RT-PCR by using a primer pair (p289/290) that detects both NLVs and SLVs. Twenty-two (19%) of the 115 diarrhea stool specimens and
