Improved Consistency of Candida auris Colonization Screening With an Anterior Nares and Hands Composite Sample.

BACKGROUND: Candida auris colonization screening is often performed using bilateral axilla and groin composite swabs. However, re-screening results for the same patient are often inconsistent over time, complicating interpretation of results. To address this, we designed and evaluated screening using an anterior nares and hands composite collection strategy in a cohort of patients colonized with C. auris. METHODS: This study included patients colonized with C. auris and cohorted on a 30-bed unit. Separate axilla and groin swabs, and anterior nares and hands swabs were obtained simultaneously

Extracellular vesicles from Candidozyma (Candida) auris inhibit proliferation of CD4 T cells by disrupting the IL-2 axis.

Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) is an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogenic fungus that has rapidly spread across the world. Due to the high frequency of multidrug-resistant strains and mortality rate, C. auris is considered a critical health threat by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization. Like other pathogens, C. auris employs virulence factors that are delivered by extracellular vesicles (EVs). We have shown that EVs from C. auris (CauEVs) activate murine phagocytes, boosting innate immune mechanisms. However, the effect of fungal EVs

Host-mimicking hypoxic conditions reveal EPA6-dependent adhesion and dissemination of Candida glabrata.

Candida glabrata is a major fungal pathogen capable of causing life-threatening disseminated infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Oxygen levels vary widely across host niches, and hypoxia is increasingly recognized as a key modulator of fungal pathogenicity. However, how low-oxygen environments influence adhesion and virulence in C. glabrata remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated C. glabrata adhesion under rigorously controlled oxygen conditions using a sealed hypoxic workstation and identified genes responsible for hypoxia-induced adhesion. Adhesion to human epit

Attending to Gyn-Ecology: Managing the 'Mess' of Recurrent Vulvovaginal Thrush.

Previous social science research on gendered experiences of thrush and vulvovaginal health has overlooked, or inadvertently sanitised, the materiality of having a body. Therefore, this study aims to return attention to the material, sensorial, and corporeal dimensions of living with recurrent thrush and use this to broaden our understandings of gendered embodiment. We present findings from a qualitative study of interviews with 32 people including women, trans, nonbinary and gender diverse people. This paper examines the bodily experiences of recurrent vulvovaginal thrush through a feminist ma

Interactions between Streptococcus agalactiae and Candida albicans affect persistence and virulence.

Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus or GBS), a Gram-positive bacterium, and Candida albicans, a polymorphic fungus, are commensal microbes in most of the population they colonize. However, for certain patients, they can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections. Previous research has indicated that GBS and C. albicans can synergize to enhance the colonization of GBS in the bladders of mice, but not much was known prior to this study about how interactions between GBS and C. albicans alter treatment effectiveness and infection outcome in vivo. Results showed that interactions betw

Metabolomic profiling reveals alterations in Candida pathophysiology and host interactions during primary oral candidiasis and following antifungal treatment.

Comparative metabolomics may shed light on host immunity and biology in oral candidiasis (oral thrush). Untargeted metabolomic analyses were performed on oral rinses collected from 26 primary oral candidiasis patients (OT), 12 patients after antifungal treatment (AT), and 12 unaffected individuals (C). Host immune modulation metabolites against oral candidiasis, Candida virulence and antifungal properties were identified. The upregulation of C17 sphinganine, L-leucine, monoacylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and spermine, in OT and AT groups, highlights the role of host immunity in Candida

Clinical characteristics of invasive candidiasis in infants born before 30 weeks of gestation: a nested case series from a multicenter cohort study in the Netherlands and Belgium.

UNLABELLED: Invasive candidiasis poses a serious risk to preterm infants, due to its rapidly progressive and severe clinical course, resulting in considerable mortality and long-term morbidity. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to assess the clinical characteristics of invasive candidiasis in very preterm infants to increase awareness among clinicians. A multicenter cohort study database was screened for infants, born in one of ten Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in the Netherlands and Belgium between October 2014 and May 2025, with blood- and/or cerebrospinal fluid culture-pro

Utility of p53, p16, and MTAP Immunohistochemistry in Oral Epithelial Dysplasia With Concurrent Candidiasis: A Novel Pattern-based Approach.

The diagnosis of oral epithelial dysplasia has a high degree of inter- and intraobserver variability. It is especially challenging to distinguish dysplasia from reactive squamous mucosa in the context of concurrent candidiasis. The accurate and timely diagnosis of dysplasia is imperative for patient outcomes, as progression to invasive squamous cell carcinoma will result in significant morbidity and mortality. The current management for patients with candidiasis is to treat with antifungals and rebiopsy if refractory. The treatment may be trialed for a few months, thus delaying appropriate tre

Candida albicans-induced ubiquitination of EGFR reveals novel host-fungal interaction pathways.

Candida albicans causes severe mucosal and systemic infections, with hypha formation playing a key role in its virulence. Hyphal invasion via endocytosis is mediated predominantly through interactions between Als3p and the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Subsequent EGFR activation by candidalysin, a hyphal-secreted cytolytic peptide toxin encoded by the ECE1 gene, induces receptor signaling and immune responses. While EGFR ubiquitination critically regulates receptor trafficking and signaling, its involvement during C. albicans infection has remained unexplored. Here, we demonstrate t

Comparative assessment of the broth microdilution and VITEK 2 systems for antifungal susceptibility testing of Candida auris (Candidozyma auris) Isolates.

BACKGROUND: Candidozyma auris is a multidrug resistant fungal pathogen classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical priority species. Broth microdilution (BMD) is the recommended reference method for antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST), with interpretation based on tentative breakpoints proposed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and, more recently, EUCAST clinical breakpoints published in 2025. However, automated systems such as VITEK 2 currently lack validated susceptibility interpretations for C. auris. This study aimed to evaluate the performanc
