Tomographic assessment of thoracic fungal diseases: a pattern and signs approach.

Pulmonary fungal infections, which can be opportunistic or endemic, lead to considerable morbidity and mortality. Such infections have multiple clinical presentations and imaging patterns, overlapping with those of various other diseases, complicating the diagnostic approach. Given the immensity of Brazil, knowledge of the epidemiological context of pulmonary fungal infections in the various regions of the country is paramount when considering their differential diagnoses. In addition, defining the patient immunological status will facilitate the identification of opportunistic infections, suc

Characteristics of lingual papillae in diabetic rats.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder resulting with many different complications including soft tissue abnormalities in the oral cavity such as periodontitis and salivary and taste dysfunction. Previous studies also reported fungal and bacterial infections in oral cavity in these patients. This study aims to represent three dimentional morphologic ultrastructural changes of the diabetic rat tongue via scanning electron microscopy. Twenty-four (24) adult male Spraque-Dawley rats, (weight ranging between 200-250g) included in the study were randomly assigned into two groups: control ra

[Endocrine complications in primary immunodeficiency diseases].

Experimental and clinical data suggest a complex interaction between the endocrine and immune systems. However, only few epidemiological studies are available dealing with endocrine complications in different types of primary immunodeficiency diseases. It is well documented that there is a close association between immunodeficiency syndromes and the development of autoimmune disorders. Most of the endocrine dysfunctions are caused mainly by immune dysregulation and autoimmunity like in APECED (autoimmune polyendocrinopathy, candidiasis, ectodermal dystrophy) and IPEX (immune dysregulation, pol

[Epidemiology of invasive mycoses: A landscape in continuous change].

The landscape of invasive mycoses is in a continuous evolution with important implications for their diagnosis and treatment. The overall burden remains high, particularly in neonates and the elderly, patients admitted to intensive care units, using prostheses, catheters or other intravenous devices, those receiving different immunosuppressant treatments or antineoplastic chemotherapy, or transplant recipients. In addition, opportunistic mycoses can be associated with HIV infection. Many fungal infections are acquired by inhalation, direct contact or ingestion, but fungi can also enter into th

Isolation of Candida auris from Ear of Otherwise Healthy Patient, Austria, 2018.

The emerging pathogen Candida auris is isolated mostly from hospitalized patients and often shows multidrug resistance. We report on the isolation of this yeast in Austria from an outpatient's auditory canal. The isolate showed good susceptibility against antifungals except for echinocandins; the patient was treated successfully with topical administration of nystatin.

Candida auris in critically ill patients: Emerging threat in intensive care unit of hospitals.

Candida auris has emerged as the multi-drug resistant non-albican candida species in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) causing bloodstream and other infections. It has often been misidentified as Candida famata, Candida sake, Rhodotorula glutinis, or Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida haemulonii by automated identification systems. We, in this study, discuss three patients who acquired Candida auris infection after 15 to 20days of their stay in medical ICU. Medical equipment, use of multiple antibiotics, and poor hand hygiene are the most probable predisposing fa

Inherited CARD9 Deficiency: Invasive Disease Caused by Ascomycete Fungi in Previously Healthy Children and Adults.

UNLABELLED: Autosomal recessive CARD9 deficiency underlies life-threatening, invasive fungal infections in otherwise healthy individuals normally resistant to other infectious agents. In less than 10 years, 58 patients from 39 kindreds have been reported in 14 countries from four continents. The patients are homozygous (n = 49; 31 kindreds) or compound heterozygous (n = 9; 8 kindreds) for 22 different CARD9 mutations. Six mutations are recurrent, probably due to founder effects. Paradoxically, none of the mutant alleles has been experimentally demonstrated to be loss-of-function. CARD9 is expr

Sexual behaviour and extra-genital colonisation in women treated for recurrent Candida vulvo-vaginitis.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyses a relation between sexual habits and the presence of Candida in extra-genital locations as well as a potential effect on therapy response. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Candida cultures were obtained from mouth, nose, anus, urine and perineum of 117 women enrolled in a RVVC treatment trial (ReCiDiF). Sexual behaviour and carriage rates of extra-genital Candida of women responding well to treatment were compared to that of non-responders. RESULTS: Most respondents were heterosexual. All but one practiced vaginal sex. Regular receptive oral sex was not related to multipl

[Not Available].

Dermatomycoses are dermatological infections very commonly encountered in private dermatological practice since they affect up to one third of the population. However, the symptoms are very often shared by other skin infections and disorders and may be highly atypical. It is thus impossible to make a diagnosis with any certainty on clinical grounds alone. For this reason, mycological diagnosis is essential to either confirm or rule out dermatomycosis, and is unavoidable when antifungal therapy is required for the treatment of ringworm of the scalp or beard, or for onychomycosis. It is also vit

Estimated burden of serious human fungal diseases in Turkey.

The current number of fungal infections occurring each year in Turkey is unknown. We estimated the burden of serious human fungal diseases based on the population at risk, existing epidemiological data from 1920 to 2017 and modelling previously described by the LIFE program (http://www.LIFE-worldwide.org). Among the population of Turkey (80.8 million in 2017), approximately 1 785 811 (2.21%) people are estimated to suffer from a serious fungal infection each year. The model used predicts high prevalences of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis episodes (312 994 cases) (392/100 000), of severe asthma
