Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant yeast that poses a disproportionate threat to transplant recipients because of prolonged hospitalizations, intensive immunosuppression, frequent invasive procedures, and exposure to broad-spectrum antimicrobials. Despite growing recognition of its propensity for skin colonization, environmental persistence, and biofilm formation on healthcare devices, standardized screening practices for transplant donors and recipients remain poorly defined. Herein, we review published outbreak reports, surveillance studies, laboratory guidance, and public health recomme

Candida species infection of vascular and urinary catheters is a growing clinical concern. By understanding how biomaterial physicochemical surface properties affect fungal behaviour, catheters could be designed to mechanically discourage infection as a form of 'mechanoprophylaxis'. In this study, silicone surfaces were synthesized with 'stiff' or 'soft' mechanical properties and the subsequent adherence, proliferation and biofilm production of Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis and Nakaseomyces glabratus isolates on these surfaces were analysed. Candida significantly bound more, prolifera

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen. The genetic factors contributing to the virulence, drug resistance, and stress-tolerant nature of C. auris are mostly unknown. Additional animal models of virulence are needed, especially those amenable to high-throughput analysis. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been validated as an effective tool for studying multiple fungal and bacterial pathogens. We describe here a C. elegans infection model in which exposure to C. auris is lethal to worms with kinetics similar to killing by Candida albicans; in contrast

Naturalized, wilded, wildling, and dirty/pet store mouse models represent a spectrum of approaches designed to make laboratory mice more immunologically and physiologically similar to wild or human contexts by increasing their exposure to naturally occurring microbes and pathogens. In this study, we screened the gut mycobiome of pet store mice, and identified Kazachstania pintolopesii as a dominant fungus in pet store mice across various geographical locations. K. pintolopesii strains isolated from mice in geographically distinct pet stores stably colonize the gastrointestinal tract of laborat

Candida albicans uniquely possesses an expanded family of genes (the TLO gene family) that encodes 10-15 paralogues of the Med2 component of the transcriptional regulator Mediator. Previous studies have shown that TLO null mutants are unable to form hyphae and are hypersensitive to environmental stress. However, the reason for the TLO gene expansion remains unclear, and the current study aimed to determine if reduction in the TLO family copy number affected virulence. In order to investigate this, we used CRISPR-Cas9 mutagenesis to generate two TLO-depleted mutants: one mutant retaining only T

OBJECTIVE: Vulvovaginal candidiasis and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis significantly impair women's quality of life and psychological well-being. Although numerous randomized controlled trials have explored probiotics as alternative or adjunctive therapies, their clinical efficacy remains inconclusive. This meta-analysis systematically assessed the therapeutic value of probiotics for these infections among nonpregnant women.
DATA SOURCES: Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Web of Science were searched from inception to October 12, 2025.

Candida albicans is a fungal commensal and also a prevalent pathogen of humans. p24 proteins are a family of type I membrane proteins regarded as cargo receptors for endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to Golgi transport and are thought to be involved in regulating secretion. Here, we sought to explore the impact of this family of proteins on C. albicans pathogenicity. The expression of all four members of the p24 family is upregulated during invasive candidiasis. Their expression is independent of yeast-to-hypha transition but is highly induced by tissue culture conditions. We then generated single de

BACKGROUND: Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is a common condition characterized by frequent relapses, often without a clearly identifiable cause. Fluconazole (FLZ) is the standard treatment but concerns about emerging resistance and drug interaction highlight the need for alternative therapies. Chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), known for its antifungal and biofilm-disrupting properties, has been proposed as a potential alternative.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, tolerability, and microbiome impact of a vaginal CHG formulation compared to oral FLZ in the treatment of RVVC caused b

INTRODUCTION: Candida infections are becoming increasingly common in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting representing a real threat to compromised patients. Echinocandins are considered the first-line treatment for the management of these infections. This work aimed to study the susceptibility of Candida species involved in invasive fungal infections at the ICU department of the University Hospital Fattouma Bourguiba of Monastir to caspofungin and evaluate the effect of overuse of this antifungal agent on the evolution of Minimal Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs).

BACKGROUND: Candida infection has been implicated in the progression of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC). Understanding the molecular pathways and gene interactions involved in this process could provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying OSCC development and identify potential therapeutic targets. This study utilizes bioinformatics tools to analyze the genes associated with Candida infection and its role in the possible progression of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the gene networks, enriched biological pathways, and chromosomal loci implicated in the progression of OSCC

PURPOSE: Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen known for its ability to cause healthcare-associated outbreaks. Although only sporadic cases have been reported in Belgium, increasing incidence in Europe highlights the need for early detection strategies. This study aimed to evaluate C. auris colonisation among high-risk patients and assess three detection methods. METHODS: A total of 100 patients were screened using two eSwabs® per patient from: (i) axillae and groins, and (ii) nose, throat and perineum. Culture on CHROMagar Candida plus was compared with two molecula

Non-receptor tyrosine kinase c-Abl is critical for host defense against bacterial and viral infections, yet its role in antifungal immunity remains elusive. Here, we report that inhibition of c-Abl with flumatinib mesylate significantly impairs the survival rate and exacerbates fungal burden in mice infected with Candida albicans. Our findings reveal that c-Abl inhibition reduces production of TNF-α, IL-10, and IL-12 in bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) after stimulation with fungal β-glucan or α-mannan. Mechanistically, c-Abl inhibition significantly blocks p38 and extracellular sig

INTRODUCTION: A group of approximately 15 Candida species are frequently found to be responsible for human invasive candidiasis, an infection that appears in patients with prolonged hospitalization, particularly in Intensive Care Units, and in immunosuppressed individuals. Given the considerable burden if not rapidly treated, clinicians face diagnostic challenges in distinguishing infection. The objective of this narrative review is to summarize the clinically applicable biomarkers used for invasive candidiasis and to evaluate their performance and create a diagnostic algorithm for clinical pr

BACKGROUND: Existing research on recurrent vulvovaginal thrush primarily frames experiences through the lens of acute, episodic, and one-off cases of thrush. Studies are lacking that investigate the implications of embedding recurrent cases of thrush into acute frameworks. This paper explores how a condition that is usually seen as one-off transitions into something for patients and healthcare professionals to think about and act on as needing longer-term care.
AIM: To understand patient and clinician perspectives on seeking and providing care for recurrent vulvovaginal thrush, and how these

Background: In the last decade, infections caused by Candida species have increased. Although C. albicans remains the most predominant species, fungal infections caused by non-albicans Candida (NAC) species have also been rising. This study aimed to determine which Candida spp. are most frequently associated with oral candidiasis. Methods: In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, a literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect databases. The search used the keyword combination "candida spp" AND "oral candidiasis" AND "oral isolates" and included articles publi

The rising global incidence of Candida parapsilosis infections is increasingly complicated by antifungal resistance, resulting in frequent therapeutic failure. This study investigated the potential of the natural compound catechin to enhance the efficacy of fluconazole through synergistic interaction. We evaluated the susceptibility of C. parapsilosis clinical isolates and a reference strain to combinations of catechin and fluconazole using standardized microbiological assays and molecular techniques. In vivo efficacy was assessed using the Galleria mellonella infection model. Mechanistic stud

INTRODUCTION: Candidiasis, an opportunistic fungal infection, is increasingly caused by non-albicans Candida species that show reduced fluconazole susceptibility, mainly due to ERG11 overexpression. This study aimed to identify Candida species, determine fluconazole resistance using VITEK 2 and disc diffusion methods, and detect ERG11 gene mutations in Candida tropicalis.
METHODOLOGY: A total of 410 clinical samples were included in this laboratory-based prospective study conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Mysuru. Fluconazole-resistant Candida species were identified using the Vitek-2 s
