The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

In this case report, we describe a successful unplanned vaginal breech birth (VBB) for a primigravid woman who presented to the hospital in labor. This woman transferred to our hospital from an attempted home birth and was highly motivated to achieve a vaginal birth. The staff were recently trained on the provision of physiologic breech birth support, and after receiving informed consent, they facilitated a successful VBB. Planned VBB services are largely unavailable in the United States. Offering women the option to undergo VBB involves screening for good candidates, obtaining informed consen

BACKGROUND: Breech deliveries are a significant public health concern in developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the cesarean section rate should not be higher than 10%-15%. As unnecessary C-sections may be associated with an increased risk of maternal and neonatal mortality, this meta-analysis was aimed at determining the rate of caesarean sections among breech deliveries in Ethiopia.
METHODS: All published and unpublished articles were obtained from legitimate databases and websites. The PRISMA guidelines were used to conduct this systematic review and meta-a

INTRODUCTION: Caesarean section (CS) rates are rising in urban hospitals in Nepal. However, the reasons behind these rising rates are poorly understood. Therefore, this study explores factors contributing to rising CS rates in two urban hospitals as well as strategies to make rational use of CS.
METHODS: This cross-sectional mixed-methods study was conducted in 2021 in two hospitals, one public hospital and one private one in Kathmandu. The quantitative part included a record-based study of 661 births (private hospital = 276 and public hospital = 385) for the fiscal year 2018/19. The qualitat

INTRODUCTION: Meconium aspiration syndrome is a life-threatening respiratory disease due to the aspiration of meconium-stained amniotic fluid into the lungs, resulting in neonatal morbidity and mortality. Impacts of meconium aspiration syndrome include respiratory failure, intellectual disability, persistent pulmonary hypertension, and air leaks. But there is a paucity of literature in Ethiopia, especially in the study area regarding the study topic. The aim of this study is to assess the proportion of meconium aspiration syndrome and associated factors among neonates admitted at the neonatal

OBJECTIVES: With global cesarean delivery rates steadily rising, a more accessible and widely adopted approach to external cephalic version for breech presentations is essential. This study seeks to clarify controversial factors associated with the procedure's success and highlight the favorable fetal-maternal outcomes post-procedure to support its broader, guideline-based application where indicated.
METHODS: This observational study was conducted over 7 years at Soroka University Medical Center, including healthy pregnant women with breech fetal presentation at a minimum of 36 weeks. The pr

INTRODUCTION: Vaginal delivery in cases of breech presentation is considered potentially stressful for the newborn. The maternal upright position may represent a more physiological approach to facilitating birth. We compare the safety and efficacy of two maternal positions in vaginal breech delivery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective, single-center, observational cohort study from October 2006 to January 2021 in a high-level obstetric center, in Salzburg, Austria. Vaginal breech deliveries in maternal all-fours position (n = 140) were compared with those in assisted supine position (n = 92)

BACKGROUND: Although there is ongoing debate, the current consensus is that vaginal breech birth carries a marginal increase in perinatal morbidity and mortality. Due to these risks there have been decreasing numbers of vaginal breech births and subsequently clinical exposure to hands-on training has declined. However, to confidently care for women who plan a vaginal breech birth or those presenting in advanced labour with an unexpected breech presentation, education in vaginal breech birth remains necessary.

INTRODUCTION: Umbilical cord prolapse is a rare obstetric emergency that threatens fetal oxygenation and may require an emergency cesarean delivery, occurring in approximately 1 to 6 per 1000 pregnancies. Risk factors include multiple gestation, polyhydramnios, and low birth weight. Ultrasound plays a vital role in improving neonatal outcomes and prolonging pregnancy in high-risk cases. However, UCP in a second-trimester twin pregnancy is highly rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old primigravida at 19 + 3 weeks with a twin pregnancy presented with umbilical cord prolapse. Examination reveale

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in major reconfiguration of maternity services, particularly an increase in virtual antenatal care.
OBJECTIVE: We explored associations between virtual antenatal care trajectories and pregnancy outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: Pregnancy and birth outcome data were obtained from a multiethnic and socioeconomically deprived UK inner-city population before and during the pandemic (with and without lockdown). Data were collected using a health record data linkage from the Born in South London cohort. Antenatal care was characterized by the number of outpatient c

BACKGROUND: Although the conversion of the foetus with breech presentation to cephalic presentation is well-supported in the literature in terms of its benefits for maternal and neonatal health, there is insufficient knowledge regarding the specific midwifery practices involved in this process. The purpose of this study is to identify the methods used by midwives to convert fetuses with breech presentation to cephalic presentation and how they feel about performing these methods.
METHODS: The study employs a descriptive exploratory qualitative design. Individual in-depth interviews were condu

INTRODUCTION: Breech presentation, occurring in approximately 3-5% of term pregnancies, is associated with increased risks of complications during vaginal delivery, including challenges in delivering the aftercoming head, umbilical cord prolapse, birth trauma and neonatal asphyxia. External cephalic version (ECV) is a recommended procedure to reposition the fetus from a non-cephalic to a cephalic presentation, aiming to reduce the risks associated with breech presentation and increase the likelihood of a vaginal delivery. We aimed to determine the impact of neuraxial analgesia on the success r

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis remains a leading cause of newborn mortality globally, accounting for approximately 15% of neonatal deaths in 2018. The burden is particularly high in low-resource settings, with a reported prevalence of 29.92%. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of neonatal sepsis among neonates aged 0-28 days admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in Uganda, to inform targeted interventions.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study among neonates aged 0 to 28 days admitted t

Cesarean delivery has become one of the most frequent interventions in obstetrics, and abnormal fetal presentation continues to be a major indication. External cephalic version (ECV) is commonly used to reduce the need for cesarean delivery, but when performed in uncontrolled settings, it may lead to serious complications. We report the case of a 39-year-old grand multipara (G11P11) referred from a rural community after undergoing an emperic ECV attempted by a traditional birth attendant eight days before admission. She developed premature rupture of membranes with persistent leakage for one w

To evaluate the association between delivery mode and perinatal outcomes in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) newborns in breech presentation. A retrospective multicenter study included births between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2022, in five maternity hospitals in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The included newborns were delivered in breech presentation and classified at birth as small-for-gestational-age (birth weight < 10th percentile) according to AUDIPOG curves. Outcomes of spontaneous or induced vaginal deliveries were compared to those of planned cesarean sections in SGA fetuses i
