Histological description and bone compactness analysis of fossil (Aldabrachelys sp.) and extant Aldabra giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) shell bone fragments.

Aldabra Atoll, north of Madagascar and part of the Seychelles Outer Islands, is home to the Aldabra giant tortoise, Aldabrachelys gigantea, the only survivor of several species of giant tortoises that were once widespread on islands across the Western Indian Ocean. Aldabra Atoll preserves an extensive fossil record of giant tortoises, providing a unique opportunity to compare the shell bone microanatomy of extinct and extant forms. This study presents the first detailed histological investigation of fossil Aldabrachelys sp. shell fragments and a preliminary comparison with extant A. gigantea.

[Transcriptomic dataset and analysis of a Stas2-15 overexpression line in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)].

Transcriptome sequencing has been widely employed to investigate plant stress tolerance mechanisms, identify key genes, and facilitate molecular breeding. The gene Stas2-15 represents a key candidate for salt tolerance in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants. However, publicly available transcriptomic datasets for this gene remain scarce. Therefore, generating more comprehensive data holds considerable value for potato research. Whole-transcriptome sequencing, differentially expressed gene profiling, as well as GO and KEGG enrichment analyses were performed on the Stas2-15-overexpressing line

SnoRNA Evolution, Genomic Context and Mobility: The Role of Function and Host Gene Association.

Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are best known for guiding chemical modifications of ribosomal and spliceosomal RNAs. Most vertebrate snoRNAs are encoded within introns of host genes and therefore depend on the production and processing of host precursor RNAs for their biogenesis. Despite this close genomic association, how host-gene context is associated with snoRNA abundance and evolution remains poorly understood. Here, we combined human snoRNA annotations from snoDB, Ensembl gene annotations, snoRNA-sensitive abundance data across multiple tissues, and vertebrate orthology analyses to syste

"There is nothing fake about the harm": The lived experiences and impacts of sexualized deepfake abuse.

BackgroundSexualized deepfake abuse involves the non-consensual creation, distribution, or threat to create or distribute sexualized imagery that has been digitally altered or entirely fabricated, often with assistance from generative artificial intelligence (AI). Reports of this abuse are increasing globally, as AI tools become more accessible. Although sexualized deepfake abuse has been linked to image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) and technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV), limited research has examined whether it produces distinct harms or explored the perspectives of both victim-surviv

Conservative Spruce Outperforms Acquisitive Larch Under Warming and CO2.

Predicting boreal forest growth is hindered by limited experimental tests on the compounding effects of climate change and atmospheric CO2. We integrated regional tree-ring data with a peatland warming and CO2 manipulation experiment, including 45 trait measurements, to assess growth responses of two widespread boreal conifers, Larix laricina and Picea mariana, to temperature, vapor pressure deficit (VPD), soil moisture, and elevated CO2. L. laricina growth was consistently more climate-sensitive than P. mariana, increasing strongly with soil moisture and declining slightly with VPD at the reg

Characterization of the Trimeric TOM Complex by HS-AFM Single-Molecule Analysis.

The translocase of the outer mitochondrial membrane (TOM) complex is the entry gate for mitochondrial proteins synthesized in the cytosol. Previous biochemical studies indicated that the TOM complex functions as a trimer and exists in a dynamic equilibrium with a Tom22-lacking dimer in intact mitochondria. In contrast, recent cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) studies revealed near-atomic structures of the Tom22-containing core dimer. However, the relationship between the core dimer and the functional trimer remains unclear. Here, we analyzed the oligomeric organization and structural properti

Constructing Stretchable Superhydrophobic Perovskite Quantum Dot Films via Dual-Phase Synergistic Engineering.

Perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) films intended for flexible optical applications are required not only to exhibit excellent luminescence performance, but also to simultaneously possess high stretchability, superhydrophobicity, patterned luminescence, and multicolor programmability under complex conditions such as large deformation, liquid intrusion, and long-term service. Here we propose a dual-phase synergistic engineering strategy, and in combination with replica molding and femtosecond laser direct writing technologies, achieve the construction of a biomimetic superhydrophobic surface and th

Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable Microplastics Drive Divergent Microbial Carbon and Nitrogen Metabolism Regimes in Soil-Plant Systems.

The accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soils worldwide has raised concerns about their potential impacts on microbially mediated carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling. However, whether biodegradable and non-biodegradable MPs differently affect microbial C and N metabolism and coupling, and whether these responses are modulated by co-occurring plant identity remain uncertain. We combined a meta-analysis with a controlled pot experiment comparing soil responses under two congeneric plant species exposed to two biodegradable and two non-biodegradable MPs at doses ranging from 0% to 2% (w/w). Picea pan-transcriptomes reveal signatures of complex phylogenetic conflict and adaptation.

Coniferous forests are among the ecosystems most exposed to rapid climate warming, and a well-resolved phylogeny of Picea is essential for understanding the evolutionary processes that have shaped diversification and regional differentiation across the genus. Here, we analysed pan-transcriptomes spanning 37 Picea species from across Northern Hemisphere forests. Our analyses reveal a bipartite pan-transcriptomic architecture in which core genes (9.4%) are associated primarily with fundamental cellular functions, whereas dispensable and private components (90.6% combined) are more strongly assoc

Breaking the Matrix: Understanding the 'Hidden Truths' of Conspiracy Theories Through Narrative Criminology.

This paper attempts a narrative criminological engagement with conspiracy theories through a thematic narrative analysis of 31 conspiracist texts taken from a British conspiracy theorist social movement. The paper identifies three core themes in these texts. First, that society is riven by hidden harms which stem from a corrupt elite. Second, that this fallen world is the result of corruption by a demonically evil outsider. Third, it is only through purging this evil that society can return to its peaceful organic past. The paper finds that whilst many of these conspiracist narratives often in

Highs and lows: Complex relationships between childhood socio-economic position and adolescent substance use in three United Kingdom birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Substance use behaviours frequently commence in adolescence, and socio-economic position (SEP) in childhood is a key predictor of variation in adolescent substance use behaviours; however, the relationship between SEP and substance use may be changing over time. Previous research examined how the construct of SEP has changed over time in the United Kingdom (UK) using latent class analysis; this study extended upon prior work to determine differences in how SEP relates to adolescent substance use over the past 50 years. METHODS: Observational study using substance use data

Arboreal signals in the skeletal proportions of the Gorilla foot.

Postcranial skeletal proportions in living apes have been linked to patterns of arboreal behaviors within and between populations, offering a comparative baseline for interpreting arboreal behavior in fossil hominoids. We quantified metatarsal and proximal phalangeal lengths across all five pedal rays in Gorilla, comparing western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), low- and high-elevation Grauer's gorillas (Gorilla beringei graueri), and two ecologically distinct mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) populations: those of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, and the Virun

Mitogenome-based phylogeny and evolutionary insights into Salticidae (Araneae) with emphasis on gene order evolution and selective pressures.

Salticidae (jumping spiders) is the most species-rich family within Araneae. Despite recent advances in phylogenomic studies, mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) evolution and its contribution to understanding phylogenetic relationships in Salticidae remain poorly characterized. Here, we present a mitochondrial phylogenomic analysis of 107 salticid species representing all seven recognized subfamilies. Using newly generated and publicly available mitogenomes, we investigated phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary patterns across the family, with a particular focus on comparisons between the
