AI-assisted point of care ultrasound and an innovative vaginal speculum: a proposed combined approach to reducing spontaneous preterm birth.

The Bouquet Speculum™ is an innovative vaginal speculum developed to enhance patient comfort, improve cervical visualization, and facilitate ease of use for healthcare providers during gynecologic examinations and procedures. Studies show AI-assisted ultrasound can identify women at risk for spontaneous preterm birth (s-PTB) more accurately than standard ultrasound. Cervical cerclage, often performed to delay delivery, is sometimes difficult with standard 2-bladed speculums. The Bouquet Speculum™ combined with AI-assisted ultrasound offers the potential for improved outcomes and reduction of m

Novel neural network classification of maternal fetal ultrasound planes through optimized feature selection.

Ultrasound (US) imaging is an essential diagnostic technique in prenatal care, enabling enhanced surveillance of fetal growth and development. Fetal ultrasonography standard planes are crucial for evaluating fetal development parameters and detecting abnormalities. Real-time imaging, low cost, non-invasiveness, and accessibility make US imaging indispensable in clinical practice. However, acquiring fetal US planes with correct fetal anatomical features is a difficult and time-consuming task, even for experienced sonographers. Medical imaging using AI shows promise for addressing current challe

A Novel Paradigm for Non-Invasive Prenatal Genetic Screening: Trophoblast Retrieval and Isolation from the Cervix (TRIC).

As the prevalence of pregnancies with advanced maternal age increases, the risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities is on the rise. Therefore, prenatal genetic screening and diagnosis have become essential elements in contemporary obstetrical care. Trophoblast retrieval and isolation from the cervix (TRIC) is a non-invasive procedure that can be utilized for prenatal genetic diagnosis. The method involves the isolation of fetal cells (extravillous trophoblasts) by transcervical sampling; along with its non-invasiveness, TRIC exhibits many other advantages such as its usefulness in early pregnan

Clinical Application of Progesterone for the Prevention of Preterm Birth, 2016.

While the preterm neonate continues to benefit from improved perinatal care, the rate of preterm birth in the United States remains significant. An increasing body of scientific literature has demonstrated the benefits of maternal progesterone administration in reducing primary and recurrent preterm birth. Intramuscular hydroxyprogesterone caproate is indicated in singleton pregnancies in women with a prior spontaneous preterm birth, while vaginal progesterone demonstrates similar efficacy in prolonging pregnancy in women with asymptomatic cervical shortening in the midtrimester. Given these f

Routine vaginal examinations for assessing progress of labour to improve outcomes for women and babies at term.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal examinations have become a routine intervention in labour as a means of assessing labour progress. Used at regular intervals, either alone or as a component of the partogram (a pre-printed form providing a pictorial overview of the progress of labour), the aim is to assess if labour is progressing physiologically, and to provide an early warning of slow progress. Abnormally slow progress can be a sign of labour dystocia, which is associated with maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality, particularly in low-income countries where appropriate interventions cannot easily be

Determinants of adequate follow-up of an abnormal Papanicolaou result among Jamaican women in Portland, Jamaica.

BACKGROUND: Among Jamaican women, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality but factors that facilitate follow-up of women receiving abnormal Pap smear results are not known. We examined whether socio-demographic factors, factors reported by the women, and assistance received for follow-up facilitate adequate follow-up of abnormal Pap smears. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-one women who had abnormal Pap results during June 1998-September 2005 in Portland, Jamaica were interviewed to identify determinants of adequate follow-up. Factors associated with fetal mortality in the triethnic population in texas, 1993 through 1995.

We examined the underlying causes of fetal deaths reported for 1993 through 1995 in relation to the mother's ethnicity, reproductive history, and medical factors listed on birth and fetal death certificates. The overall fetal mortality rate (FMR) was 6.3 per 1000 live births plus fetal deaths, and 5.6, 5.9, and 9.8 per 1000, respectively in pregnancies of white, hispanic, and black women. Preterm birth (low birth weight) was a major predictor (or consequence) of fetal death, and extremes of maternal age, increased parity, and plural pregnancies were also associated with increased FMRs, especia
