Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) is a pluripotent cytokine that is important in many infections, though its role in Coccidioides infection remains poorly understood. The need to understand TNFα in Coccidioides infection has increased recently with the widespread use of TNFα inhibitors for a wide variety of autoimmune conditions. Here, we couple the newly developed Coccidioides infection model using strain Cp1038 and C57BL/6 × DBA/2J F1 (B6D2F1) mice. B6D2F1 mice develop long-lasting control of Cp1038. Treatment of B6D2F1 mice with anti-TNFα antibodies permits significant fungal proliferation

Coccidioidomycosis, colloquially known as Valley Fever, is an invasive dimorphic fungal infection caused by Coccidioides immitis and C. posadasii. The fungi are found in the arid desert soils of the southwestern US, as well as in parts of Mexico and Central and South America. Acquisition is typically via inhalation of arthroconidia which become airborne after both natural (e.g., earthquakes, dust storms, and fires) and human-related events (e.g., military maneuvers, recreational activities, agriculture, and construction). The incidence of infection in increasing likely a result of both climati

Coccidioidomycosis is an infectious disease caused by Coccidioides immitis or C. posadasii fungus. Humans usually get infected by inhaling spores risen from the soil. Although in 60 percent of cases symptoms are absent, remaining patients can develop various manifestations of the disease, from flu-like symptoms to severe dissemination or meningitis. In endemic regions (California, Arizona, Mexico, Central, and South America), pulmonary coccidioidomycosis causes 25% of community-acquired cases of pneumonia. We present the first registered case of pulmonary coccidioidomycosis in Lithuania. Clini

BACKGROUND: Desert dust outbreaks and dust storms are the major source of particulate matter globally and pose a major threat to human health. We investigated the microorganisms transported with desert dust particles and evaluated their potential impact on human health.
METHODS: A systematic review of all reports on the association between non-anthropogenic desert dust pollution, dust microorganisms and human health is conducted.
RESULTS: In total, 51 articles were included in this review. The affected regions studied were Asia (32/51, 62.7%) followed by Europe (9/51, 17.6%), America (6/51,

BACKGROUND: Pericardial disease can be a manifestation of infection and imaging can have a role in its diagnosis. coccidioidomycosis endemic fungal infection has been more frequently reported over the past few decades. Other than case reports or series, there has been no systemic study evaluating pericardial imaging findings in patients with coccidioidomycosis to the best of our knowledge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate intrathoracic computed tomographic (CT) imaging abnormalities in patients with coccidioidal infection with specific emphasis on the pericardium.
METHODS: Retrospect

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal disease caused by Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii. We searched the records of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory from 1990 through 2020 for cases of coccidioidomycosis in horses. The selection criteria for these cases were: 1) live-born horses submitted for autopsy, and 2) a diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis was established, regardless of cause of death. During that time, 19,054 horses were received, and 26 cases (0.14%) of coccidioidomycosis were diagnosed in horses, of which 19 (73%) cases had pneumonia and/or pleuritis with or

Coccidioidomycosis is a fungal infection caused by Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii. The dimorphic fungi live in the soils of arid and semi-arid regions of the western United States, as well as parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America. Incidence of disease has risen consistently in recent years, and the geographic distribution of Coccidioides spp. appears to be expanding beyond previously known areas of endemicity. Climate factors are predicted to further extend the range of environments suitable for the growth and dispersal of Coccidioides species. Most infections ar

We conducted a retrospective cohort study that tested 2,000 US military personnel for Coccidioides antibodies in a disease-endemic region. The overall incidence of seroconversion was 0.5 cases/100 person-years; 12.5% of persons who seroconverted had illnesses requiring medical care. No significant association was found between demographic characteristics and seroconversion or disease.

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted medical care worldwide and caused delays in care for many illnesses and procedures unrelated to COVID-19; however, less clear is how it may have affected diagnosis of conditions that present with similar symptoms, such as primary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis (PPC). We conducted an observational cohort study of patients diagnosed with PPC between March 1 and December 1 in 2 years: 2019 (before COVID-19) and in 2020 (after COVID-19) to compare the time from symptom onset to PPC diagnosis. Relevant demographic and clinical variables were collected, and statisti

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a rare nodular mass that has not commonly been reported in the literature in association with coccidioidomycosis (CM). Coccidioidomycosis has other known skin manifestations including erythema nodosum and interstitial granulomatous dermatitis. Pulmonary CM is the most common form of the disease and the most common cause of CM-associated rash. This is an important clinical consideration for patients with ALHE who reside in CM-endemic areas, which notably include the southwestern region of the United States, Mexico, and South America. We repo

The majority of human coccidioidomycosis infections are asymptomatic or self-limited but may have sequestered spherules in highly structured granulomas. Under immunosuppression, reactivation of fungal growth can result in severe disease. B6D2F1 mice asymptomatically infected with C. posadasii strain 1038 were immunosuppressed with dexamethasone (DXM) in drinking water. Treated mice died 16−25 days later, while untreated mice survived (p < 0.001). Flow cytometry of lung granulomas on days 5, 10, 15, and 20 of DXM treatment showed immune cell populations decreased 0.5−1 log compared with untreat

A 7-year-old, male neutered, Miniature Australian Shepherd from Arizona was presented for evaluation of a 3-month history of progressive cough. Thoracic radiographs revealed a focal alveolar pulmonary pattern and suspected tracheobronchial lymph node enlargement. Serum anti-Coccidioides spp. IgM/IgG antibodies were not detected by agar gel immunodiffusion performed by 2 different reference commercial veterinary laboratories approximately 3.5 and 3.75 months after respiratory tract signs were first noted. The dog failed to respond to empiric therapy with a cough suppressant and various antibiot

INTRODUCTION: Coccidioides immitis is a fungus that develops in endemic areas characterized by dry climates, with little rainfall and easy aerial dissemination. The most common form of infection is pulmonary coccidioidomycosis, although it is often asymptomatic. There are non-respiratory forms of this disease. Osteomyelitis is an extrapulmonary manifestation of C. immitis infection. Symptoms are usually nonspecific and radiographic findings are often confused with bone tumors. Treatment of coccidioidal osteomyelitis is often challenging.

Histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, and coccidioidomycosis are endemic fungal infections in North America. Many infections are subclinical, and many symptomatic infections are mild. Pneumonia is the most common clinical manifestation. All can occur in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients, with the latter at greater risk for disseminated and more severe disease. As with other acute respiratory illness, imaging can play a role in diagnosis. Knowledge of the acute and chronic imaging findings of endemic fungal infections is important for radiologists so that they can assist in establishing t

Coccidioidomycosis (CM) is a fungal disease that results from inhalation of spores of Coccidioides immitis and C posadasii. If symptomatic, disease primarily manifests as community-acquired pneumonia; however, additional pulmonary manifestations such as pleural effusion, empyema, and cavitation may occur. Diabetic patients have an increased risk of severe and cavitary CM. Cavitary disease may erode vasculature and pulmonary parenchyma leading to further complications. Furthermore, chronic cavities can become colonized as well and develop superimposed infections. This is a case of cavitary CM i

Fungal infections commonly present with myriad symptoms that mimic other clinical entities, notable amongst which is tuberculosis. Besides histoplasmosis and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, which can mimic TB, this review has identified several other fungal infections which also do. A total of 80 individual cases misdiagnosed as TB are highlighted: aspergillosis (n = 18, 22.5%), histoplasmosis (n = 16, 20%), blastomycosis (n = 14, 17.5%), cryptococcosis (n = 11, 13.8%), talaromycosis (n = 7, 8.8%), coccidioidomycosis (n = 5, 6.3%), mucormycosis (n = 4, 5%), sporotrichosis (n = 3, 3.8%), phaeo

INTRODUCTION: Although most cases of coccidioidomycosis are subclinical or self-limited respiratory disease, 1% lead to extrathoracic dissemination and become fatal, especially in patients with an associated immunodeficiency. Up to 30%-50% of patients with defects in cell-mediated immunity, those with AIDS and recipients of solid-organ transplants, may develop disseminated coccidioidomycosis (DC). Within the primary immunodeficiencies, an uncommon group is caused by C-terminal NFKB2 pathogenic variants.
