Placental lesions in systemic lupus erythematosus: A retrospective histopathological study in a tertiary care center.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease of unknown etiology. Pregnancy in patients with SLE, however, poses high-risk factors stemming from both maternal (such as lupus flare and preeclampsia) and fetal (including miscarriage and intrauterine fetal death) complications. Although the pathophysiology underlying obstetric mortality and morbidity in SLE is still under investigation, recent studies have suggested that placental dysfunction may significantly contribute. This study investigated the perinatal outcomes of pregnant women with SLE and the histopath

Improving early detection of critical congenital heart disease in a high-performing prenatal screening system: the OXYNAT interventional cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of critical congenital heart disease (CHD) is essential to prevent cardiovascular collapse and improve neonatal outcomes. While prenatal screening has advanced significantly in high-income countries, postnatal detection remains a safety net, particularly for left-sided lesions. Although pulse oximetry (PO) screening has been evaluated in several settings with high prenatal detection rates, the added value of combining it with systematic paediatric examination, and its impact on care pathways remains incompletely characterised in such contexts. OBJECTIVE: To evaluat

Characterization of the clinical course of early-onset severe hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn.

INTRODUCTION: Severe fetal anemia developing at ≤24 weeks gestational age (GA) in pregnancies complicated by early-onset severe hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (EOS-HDFN) is managed by intrauterine erythrocyte transfusions (IUTs). Evidence of off-label intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for preventing/reducing fetal hydrops, fetal anemia, and IUT(s) remains limited to retrospective studies and case series. The prospective, global, multicenter, observational CLARITY study characterized standard-of-care management and outcomes for high-risk pregnancies complicated by EOS-HDFN and their

GLP-1 receptor agonist exposure in the periconceptional period and adverse obstetric outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and meta-analysis assesses whether exposure to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) during pregnancy or the periconceptional period is associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. METHODS: Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched for observational studies comparing pregnancies exposed and unexposed to GLP-1 RAs within 6 months before a positive pregnancy test. Outcomes included miscarriage, intrauterine death, congenital anomalies, preterm birth (PTB), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), gestational diabetes

Long-term Exposure to PM2.5 and Risk of Adverse Pregnancy Events in Women with Pulmonary Hypertension: A Nationwide Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been linked with adverse pregnancy events. However, the effects of PM2.5 on pregnant women with pulmonary hypertension (PH) remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study of pregnant women with PH hospitalized at 24 tertiary hospitals in China between January 2016 and August 2022. Monthly PM2.5 exposure was estimated and the average PM2.5 concentrations during the 3-year exposure proceeding the end of pregnancy was used as the primary exposure metric. Generalized linear models with binomial distributions were a

Palau Tobacco Excise Tax 2013: An Evaluation of Tobacco Use, Imports, and Expenditures.

Tobacco use is a public health concern in the Republic of Palau, where cigarette smoking and betel nut chewing with tobacco are highly prevalent. In 2013, Palau enacted the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Act with Section 26 that established an excise tax on tobacco products beginning in 2014. This study assessed the impact of the tobacco tax on adult and youth tobacco use prevalence, tobacco importation, and household tobacco expenditure between 2010 and 2024. Data were extracted from 3 adult population-based surveys (2011, 2016, 2023), 3 youth census surveys (2013, 2017, 2022), annual tobacco import

Planned Community Birth and Birth Outcomes.

IMPORTANCE: Studies examining community births (ie, births that occur outside of a hospital setting, such as at home or in a birth center) often misclassify transfers to hospitals as hospital births. Oregon uniquely tracks planned birth location at labor onset. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between planned place of delivery and perinatal outcomes in Oregon. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a population-based cohort study of singleton, nonbreech infants without lethal anomalies born at 37 to 44 weeks' gestation in Oregon between January 2012 and December 2020. Role of the cerebroplacental ratio and non-stress test in predicting adverse perinatal outcomes in high-risk pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: High-risk pregnancies are associated with increased risk of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The non-stress test (NST) is the standard method for antenatal fetal monitoring, while the cerebroplacental ratio (CPR) has emerged as a noninvasive tool for predicting adverse perinatal outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the role of the CPR and NST in predicting adverse perinatal outcomes in high-risk pregnancies. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted with 672 high-risk pregnant women at Haiphong Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Vietnam from February 2024 to February 20

Intravenous iron for non-anaemic iron deficiency in pregnancy: a multicentre, two-arm, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In non-anaemic iron deficiency during pregnancy, it remains unclear whether the administration of intravenous iron improves maternal and infant outcomes, compared with prophylactic oral iron that is currently recommended for antenatal care. This study evaluated whether the addition of intravenous iron to routine oral prophylaxis had an effect on maternal haemoglobin concentration before delivery in non-anaemic iron deficient pregnant women. METHODS: In this multicentre, two-arm, randomised trial done at three teaching hospitals in Lahore, Pakistan, pregnant women aged 18 years or

Women and health professionals' views and experiences of reduced fetal movements in low- and middle-income countries: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Raising awareness of reduced fetal movement (RFM) is a potential approach to prevent stillbirth. To date, research regarding fetal movements has largely been conducted in high-income countries. However, conclusions drawn from this setting may not be applicable to other settings with a higher burden of stillbirth due to differences in sociodemographic factors and healthcare systems. AIM: To explore women's and health professionals' experiences regarding fetal movements, and interventions on encouraging the awareness of RFM in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: A comprehens

Complexities with diagnosis and management of symptomatic hypoglycemia during pregnancy post-bariatric surgery: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Post-bariatric surgery hypoglycemia (PBH) in pregnancy is an important yet likely under-recognized complication. It is associated with maternal and fetal risks, including lifestyle implications, reduced cognition, intrauterine growth restriction and premature delivery. Management is challenging, with no specific guidelines targeted to care in pregnancy published. AREAS COVERED: We conducted a scoping review, searching PUBMED, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases for all relevant studies of PBH in pregnancy between June 1974 and 2025. Our review identified 16 papers discussing 20 cases.
