Antenatal diagnosis of early-onset small for gestational age: absolute and relative risks of adverse outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the absolute and relative risks of adverse maternal, perinatal, and longer-term child outcomes for pregnancies with antenatally detected early-onset small for gestational age fetuses, compared with baseline population rates. STUDY DESIGN: We linked ultrasound data from pregnancies with antenatally detected, nonanomalous, early-onset small for gestational age fetuses (estimated fetal weight and/or abdominal circumference <10th percentile at 16+0-31+6 weeks) from our tertiary referral center with provincial health and education databases. We compared risks of adverse pre

Gestational Exposure to Black Phosphorus Nanoparticles Induces Placental Trophoblast Dysfunction by Triggering Reactive Oxygen Species-Regulated Mitophagy.

As a type of two-dimensional nanomaterial, black phosphorus (BP) has attracted considerable interest for applications in various fields. Despite its advantages, including biodegradability and biocompatibility, recent studies have shown that BP exhibits cytotoxicity in different types of cells. However, no studies have investigated the effects of BP exposure during pregnancy. Herein, we first investigated the effect of gestational exposure to BP nanoparticles (BPNPs) in a mouse model. Our findings indicated that BPNPs exposure restricted fetal growth and hindered placental development. In HTR8/

Evidence-Based Perioperative Management of Placenta Accreta Spectrum Disorder.

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorder, characterized by failure of the abnormally adherent placenta to detach from the uterus after delivery, is a leading cause of severe maternal morbidity. Despite its relatively low incidence, disproportional contributions to perinatal hemorrhage, massive transfusion, and emergency hysterectomy underscore the critical need for development of evidence-based surgical management strategies for PAS. There is clear benefit to preoperative management of anemia, as well as preparation for intraoperative resuscitation with blood products and cell salvage. Several

Elevated NGF provokes decidual lipid peroxidation and promotes preterm birth in mice.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth (PTB) is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, with infection and inflammation being the most common triggers. However, many cases of preterm labor have unknown causes. The maternal decidua is a highly dynamic and heterogeneous region, serving as the nexus at the maternal-fetal interface, connecting the mother and the fetus. Increasing evidence suggests that the maternal decidua plays a crucial role in the initiation of labor. Nerve growth factor (NGF), is an important member of the neurotrophin family and is identified to play a crucial role in

Hypothalamic prolactin signaling protects against overheating in pregnancy.

Pregnancy involves physiological adaptations that optimize fetal development. Reduced maternal core temperature may protect offspring from the teratogenic effects of excess heat, but the mechanisms regulating body temperature during pregnancy remained largely unclear. In a recent study in mice, Ladyman and colleagues identified the prolactin receptor (Prlr) as a thermal switch lowering maternal core temperature and promoting offspring survival in warm environments.

Inflammation in Pregnancy: Key Drivers, Signaling Pathways and Associated Complications.

In the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) paradigm, there is a clear link between an adverse prenatal environment and the development of non-hereditary diseases later in life. Exposure to intrauterine inflammation, for example, has been associated with several late-onset conditions, including neurological, cardiovascular, immune, and metabolic disorders. Moreover, maternal and fetal health are compromised under exacerbated inflammation, as it can result in spontaneous abortion, preterm delivery, or intrauterine growth restriction. Prominent gestational pathologies associated w

Altered placental iron transport and putative ferroptosis pathways in pregnancies with excessive gestational weight gain: A prospective cohort study.

Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) is associated with various adverse pregnancy outcomes, including disruption of placental function and fetal development. Iron transport through the placenta is crucial for fetal growth, and transferrin receptor 2 (TfR2) plays a key role in iron homeostasis. However, the effect of excessive GWG on placental TfR2 expression and neonatal iron parameters remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of excessive GWG on placental TfR2 expression and its association with neonatal iron levels, including cord blood serum iron levels and total iron-

Discovery of placental microRNAs associated with maternal insulin sensitivity during pregnancy.

CONTEXT: During pregnancy, maternal insulin sensitivity decreases, supporting transfer of nutrients to the fetus; when excessive, this can lead to gestational diabetes mellitus. The physiological decline in insulin sensitivity is likely caused by placental factors; however, the identity of these placental factors remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To identify placental microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with maternal insulin sensitivity during pregnancy. DESIGN: A prospective pregnancy cohort study called Genetics of Glucose regulation in Gestation and Growth. We assessed insulin sensitivity using the M

Microbiome alterations in healthy pregnancy and pregnancy disorders in association with autoimmune diseases.

Pregnancy induces significant alterations in the maternal microbiome, which are critical for fetal development and maternal health. Gynecological diseases, along with infertility, have increased due to excessive personal care product usage, which contains endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Mammalian immune systems develop during pregnancy and after birth owing to crucial inputs from the environment. The growing incidence of autoimmune diseases (AIMDs) emphasizes the need to understand the environmental elements that play a role in their development, with the microbiome emerging as a key pl

TIGAR deficiency exacerbated preeclampsia by impairing autophagy and accelerating trophoblasts apoptosis upon excessive oxidative stress via the NRF2-ARE pathway.

AIMS: Preeclampsia (PE) is the main cause of maternal and perinatal mortality, however, its pathogenetic mechanism is still elusive. TIGAR, as a p53-inducible regulator of glycolysis and apoptosis, is reported to alleviate oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to clarify the role of TIGAR in the development of PE and its mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PE patients, L-NAME treated mice and H2O2 exposed HTR8 were well established for TIGAR evaluation. Fluorescent probes and inhibitors were used to detect autophagic flux regulated by TIGAR. SiRNAs, dual-luciferase reporter system, EMSA a
