Novel chitosan/hydroxypropyl methylcellulose/propylene glycol hydrogel containing lyophilized amniotic membrane particles for wound healing: Synthesis and optimization.

Chronic wounds pose challenges due to delayed healing and infection risks. Advanced dressings that provide moisture, support, and bioactivity are critical for regeneration. Hydrogels offer high water content and biocompatibility, while the human amniotic membrane (hAM) provides proteins and growth factors that enhance healing. However, hAM's fragility limits direct use. This study developed a hydrogel of chitosan, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and propylene glycol (PG), incorporating lyophilized hAM particles to combine the hydrogel's physicochemical properties with hAM's bioactivity.

Biallelic PKD1 mutations causing neonatal death in an extremely preterm infant: a Korean case report of very early-onset ADPKD.

BACKGROUND: Very early-onset autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (VEO-ADPKD) caused by biallelic PKD1 mutations is extremely rare and often phenocopies autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD), complicating prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling. CASE PRESENTATION: We report an extremely preterm Korean male infant (27 + 3 weeks, 1300 g) with fetal polycystic kidney disease and severe oligohydramnios from 24 + 6 weeks. The infant died on day 2 with refractory hypoxemia despite maximal support. Clinical exome sequencing revealed compound heterozygous PKD1 variants: a paternally inherited tru

Incidence and Predictors of Necrotizing Enterocolitis Among Low-Birth-Weight Neonates Admitted to Southern Ethiopian Public Hospitals.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) has emerged over the past 25 years as the most common gastrointestinal emergency in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide. Despite significant improvements in survival among premature and low-birth-weight (LBW) neonates due to advances in neonatal intensive care, the incidence of NEC remains persistently high, largely because of the physiological vulnerability associated with LBW and prematurity. The purpose of this study was to assess the incidence and identify predictors of NEC among LBW newborns in South Ethiopia. A hospital-based prospective cohort

Prenatal Diagnosis of Renal Cysts and Diabetes Syndrome (RCAD): A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Renal cysts and diabetes syndrome (RCAD), caused by heterozygous variants or whole-gene deletions in the HNF1B gene, is a rare, multisystem disorder often detected prenatally by ultrasound findings of bilateral cystic or hyperechogenic kidneys. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 21-year-old woman (G3P2) at 19 weeks of gestation referred for detailed fetal evaluation due to bilateral hyperechogenic, polycystic kidneys and severe oligohydramnios. After counselling, an amnioinfusion was performed to enable amniocentesis and cytogenetic testing. Chromosomal microarray analysis identif

Microcephaly, seizures and developmental delay caused by two novel mutations in the PNKP gene: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Microcephaly, seizures and developmental delay, known as MCSZ, is an uncommon autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental disorder linked to a bifunctional enzyme named polynucleotide-kinase-3'-phosphatase (PNKP). Prompt identification and management of the disorder are crucial, as delayed diagnosis or intervention may lead to severe complications or mortality. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a patient with small anterior fontanelle and head circumference, refractory epilepsy and global developmental delay. He was a baby conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF). Microcephaly and oligoh

Conservative management leading to delivery of a twin pregnancy complicated by previable preterm premature rupture of membranes: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The threshold of neonatal viability is established at a gestational age of 22-23 weeks. Previable preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPPROM) occurring prior to this period is frequently associated with recommendations for pregnancy termination due to exceedingly high rates of neonatal mortality and maternal infectious morbidity. The objective of this study is to provide a therapeutic reference for patients who experience premature rupture of membranes before 22 weeks of gestation and opt to continue their pregnancy. CASE DESCRIPTION: This report describes the case of a 35-yea

Prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of sirenomelia: A case report.

Sirenomelia is an extremely rare and almost invariably lethal congenital malformation characterized by variable fusion of the lower limbs and severe associated visceral anomalies. We report a case prenatally diagnosed at 20 weeks of gestation in a 25-year-old nondiabetic, nonconsanguineous woman referred for suspected polymalformative fetal syndrome. Prenatal ultrasound demonstrated severe oligohydramnios, bilateral small hyperechoic kidneys suggestive of renal dysplasia, fused lower limbs, absent external genitalia, and a single umbilical artery, findings strongly supporting the diagnosis of

Prenatal diagnosis of Apert syndrome caused by a de novo FGFR2 mutation in the second trimester: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Apert syndrome is a syndromic craniosynostosis primarily caused by pathogenic mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. Current prenatal diagnosis of Apert syndrome predominantly relies on ultrasound imaging in the third trimester (28 weeks of gestation to delivery), which is not conducive to early clinical decision-making. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, prenatal ultrasound at the 20 weeks of gestation revealed craniosynostosis, oligohydramnios, and syndactyly of hands and feet in the fetus. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) followed by Sanger sequencing was

Twin-twin transfusion syndrome and related monochorionic disorders: historical perspectives, current controversies, and evidence-based opportunities.

Twin-twin transfusion syndrome remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in monochorionic twin pregnancies, arising from placental vascular anastomoses and representing a frequent indication for referral to fetal therapy centers. Despite advances in ultrasound assessment and fetoscopic laser therapy, variability in diagnostic thresholds, Doppler interpretation, and recognition of overlapping phenotypes-particularly twin anemia-polycythemia sequence and selective fetal growth restriction-continues to complicate clinical decision-making and limits meaningful comparison of outcomes across

Fetal bladder rupture in posterior urethral valves: a clinically relevant complication or a protective pop-off mechanism.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are the most common cause of congenital bladder outlet obstruction in male infants and may result in kidney damage and chronic kidney disease. In severe cases, spontaneous fetal bladder rupture with urinary ascites may occur. This study presents a rare case of fetal bladder rupture secondary to PUV requiring complex bladder reconstruction and systematically reviews similar cases. METHODS: We report a male patient with prenatal bladder rupture due to PUV. A systematic review was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines using PubMed, Embase, Scopus,

Endogenous Therapeutic Agents for Acute Corneal and Ocular Surface Injuries.

Acute corneal injuries vary greatly in morbidity, but can cause severe cases of vision loss. Among these injuries are mechanical corneal traumas and acute chemical burns. The current standard of care in the acute phase of management is aimed at reducing the offending agent, pain management, and infection prevention; however, corneal scarring and limbal stem cell deficiency may result even after the acute management of severe corneal injuries. In the most serious cases, surgical intervention, including cornea or stem cell transplantation, may be required to restore functional vision. As such, t

Amniotic fluid index versus maximum vertical pocket for predicting adverse perinatal outcomes in singleton term pregnancies: A retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Amniotic fluid assessment is central to antepartum fetal surveillance. Current guidelines favor the maximum vertical pocket (MVP) over the amniotic fluid index (AFI), as AFI increases oligohydramnios diagnosis and labor induction rates without improving perinatal outcomes. Neither method accurately identifies true oligohydramnios by dye-dilution techniques (sensitivity 6-30%), and the clinical significance of AFI-detected oligohydramnios unconfirmed by MVP remains uncertain. We aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of AFI versus MVP for predicting adverse perinatal outcomes in si
