BACKGROUND: Climate change-driven heat stress (HS) poses a growing threat to pregnancy outcomes; however, the mechanisms linking maternal HS to fetal growth restriction (FGR) remain incompletely understood, and effective nutritional interventions are lacking. The gut-placenta axis critically governs maternal-fetal health, but its role in mediating HS-related FGR has yet to be elucidated.
METHODS: A murine model of gestational HS (38.5 °C, 2.5 h daily from E0.5 to E12.5) was established to investigate the protective effects of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on HS-induced FGR. Placental efficiency, oxi

Nanomaterials are increasingly used in manufacturing, medicine, consumer products, and environmental technologies due to their unique physicochemical properties. Although these materials offer substantial technological and societal benefits, their widespread use has raised concerns about potential health risks. Of particular importance is exposure during pregnancy, as certain nanoparticles can cross the placental barrier and reach the developing embryo. Fetal tissues are highly sensitive to environmental insults, so maternal exposure to nanoparticles may disrupt normal development and increase

OBJECTIVE: We report the case of retained products of conception (RPOC) with massive uterine arteriovenous fistula (AVF).
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for having abnormal pregnancy at 9 weeks. Ultrasonography showed a deformed gestational sac. Serum hCG levels were initially markedly elevated but demonstrated a progressive decline over time. At 20 weeks gestation, a uterine mass grew with an abundant blood flow to replace the myometrium. The 3-dimensional blood vessel image constructed from the contrast enhanced CT showed a formation of massive AVF in the uter

BACKGROUND: A uterine niche (cesarean section scar defect), defined as an indentation ≥ 2 mm in the myometrium at the site of a previous cesarean scar, reflects impaired myometrial healing after cesarean delivery. Its prevalence increases with the number of cesarean deliveries and is associated with abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, secondary infertility, cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy, placenta accreta spectrum disorders, and uterine rupture in subsequent pregnancies. While secondary surgical correction may alleviate symptoms, preventive strategies implemented at the time of repeat ces

BACKGROUND: Severe postpartum hemorrhage during cesarean section is a critical obstetric emergency; delayed hemostasis may lead to hemorrhagic shock, hysterectomy, and even maternal mortality. Individualized uterine-preserving hemostatic strategies represent the central focus and greatest challenge in current clinical management.
CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports a case of a patient at 40 + 2 weeks of gestation with concurrent gestational diabetes mellitus and prenatal fever. During cesarean section, the patient developed severe postpartum hemorrhage (with blood loss reaching 2,500 mL)

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Autophagy is a highly conserved eukaryotic cellular process whose dysfunction results in human pathologies including cancer and neurodegenerative disease. First identified in yeast, ATG genes are central players in autophagy. Mutations in core autophagy genes ATG5 and ATG7 have been previously reported to cause rare genetic disorders with autosomal recessive inheritance.
METHODS: Here we report, for the first time, variants in human ATG9B gene as causative factors for a rare neurodevelopmental disease with autosomal recessive inheritance. Three distinct mutations were d

Placental pathology provides critical diagnostic, prognostic and clinicopathological insights into maternal-foetal outcomes. While frequently discarded post-delivery, macroscopic and histopathological evaluation can clarify adverse outcomes, including stillbirth, neonatal death, prematurity, foetal growth restriction, hydrops, infection and complicated multiple gestations. This paper outlines a standardized framework for placental examination by covering rationale, indications, specimen handling, sampling and reporting designed for universal implementation across all public, private and academ

Maternal depression and anxiety are common perinatal conditions; however, large-scale, nationally representative evidence on their association with a comprehensive range of obstetric and neonatal outcomes remains limited. The study utilized the International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th Revisions, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM) to identify diagnostic codes for depression, anxiety, and obstetric outcomes. Data from the National Inpatient Sample were analyzed. Categorical variable differences were assessed via the chi-square test. Univariate and multivariate regressio

Chronic hyperglycemia disrupts the retinal neurovascular unit, making diabetic retinopathy (DR) the leading cause of adult vision loss. The hallmarks of DR include pathological angiogenesis, vascular leakage, and neurodegeneration. Although vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) is a key mediator of these abnormalities and anti-VEGF therapies remain the standard treatment, many patients exhibit incomplete responses, and these therapies do not adequately address inflammation or fibrosis. Placental growth factor (PlGF), a VEGF family member that selectively binds to VEGFR1, has emerged as

The Hippo-YAP signaling pathway is crucial for tissue homeostasis, yet its specific contribution to recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) remains poorly understood. This study investigated Hippo-YAP signaling in physiological and pathological human endometrium, and its functional impact on endometrial receptivity and decidualization. We analyzed endometrial tissues from fertile controls, RIF patients, and RPL patients, complemented by mechanistic studies in Ishikawa cells and telomerase-immortalized human endometrial stromal cells. In fertile controls, YAP was

Plastics are a growing environmental and health threat. Microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) and nanoplastics (NPs, <1 μm) are pervasive environmental contaminants increasingly detected within human tissues, including placenta, cord blood, breast milk, and infant stool, highlighting chronic early-life exposure. Children represent a uniquely vulnerable population due to higher intake relative to body mass, immature detoxification and immune systems, and rapid organogenesis. MPs and NPs (MNPs) can traverse biological barriers, accumulate in multiple organs, and disrupt key developmental processes through

BACKGROUND: Placenta accreta spectrum represents a group of abnormal placental implantation disorders characterized by partial or complete adherence of the placenta to the uterine wall, with invasion into the myometrium or beyond. It is a major cause of severe obstetric hemorrhage and is associated with significant maternal morbidity and mortality. The rising incidence of placenta accreta spectrum parallels the increasing rate of cesarean deliveries, making early diagnosis and planned multidisciplinary management crucial in modern obstetric practice.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) represents a major global health burden, encompassing a spectrum of hepatic abnormalities ranging from steatosis to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Laennec, a human placenta-derived hydrolysate, was evaluated for its therapeutic effects on alcohol-induced fatty liver in an experimental animal model.
METHODS: Animals were pretreated with alcohol for 2 weeks, followed by the co-administration of alcohol and Laennec for 4 weeks. The study included four groups: normal control, alcohol-only, and low- and high-dose Laennec-treated groups.
RESULTS:

The umbilical cord serves as a critical lifeline, connecting the fetus to the pregnant individual. Stillbirth, fetal death at or beyond 20 weeks' gestation, can occur due to developmental anomalies or complications of the umbilical cord. Gestational diabetes (GDM), which affects 8% of pregnancies in the United States, is associated with vascular abnormalities of the placenta and umbilical cord. While cellular and microstructural changes in the umbilical vasculature have been observed in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes, it is unknown if these influence the macroscale mechanical

Platelet-derived growth factor associated protein 1 (PDAP1) is implicated in various biological processes, including tumorigenesis and the apoptosis of mature B lymphocytes. However, its functions in organismal development and homeostasis remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we generated Pdap1 knockout mice to elucidate the physiological functions of PDAP1 in vivo. Notably, our findings indicate that the absence of Pdap1 results in early embryonic lethality by embryonic day 11.5, accompanied by a spectrum of developmental abnormalities, including growth retardation, enlarged pericard

UNLABELLED: Plant microRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulators of gene expression, and primary miRNA transcripts (pri-miRNAs) can encode short regulatory peptides known as microRNA-encoded peptides (miPEPs), which enhance transcription of their associated miRNAs. However, comprehensive and accurately defined miPEP catalogues remain limited in crop species, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Here, we generated a curated tomato miPEP catalogue using a transcription start site (TSS)-aware pipeline that integrates upstream sequence extension, promoter prediction, and stringent open reading frame (O

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of circulating human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the pathophysiology of enhanced myometrial vascularity (EMV) postpregnancy and the usefulness of determining hCG level in the clinical evaluation and management of this condition.
METHODS: This was a retrospective observational case series of patients managed clinically at our centers who had postpregnancy EMV diagnosed using ultrasound by the observation of a dilated vascular web in the myometrium, with or without retained products of conception (RPOC), that persisted beyond 4-6 weeks following a failed or te

UNLABELLED: Introduction:Aim of this narrative review is to provide an update on diagnosis, management and outcome of RPOC and EMV diagnosed after first trimester pregnancy. Retained products of conception (RPOC) and enhanced myometrial vascularity (EMV) are considered complications following pregnancy and there is scarce agreement upon their management. Methods:A comprehensive, narrative, research was conducted. A literature review of relevant studies published between 2000 and 2025 was carried out using MEDLINE and the Cochrane library using the following terms: 'Arteriovenous Malformations'

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can result in severe fetal outcomes, yet the mechanisms of transplacental dissemination remain incompletely defined. We previously showed that ZIKV induces tunneling nanotubes (TNTs), actin-rich intercellular conduits that enable direct cell-to-cell transfer of viral components. Here, we investigated the in vivo role of TNTs in ZIKV maternal-fetal transmission using complementary pregnancy models. A TNT-deficient ZIKV mutant (ZIKVΔTNT), harboring a change between residues 40 and 52 of the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1), showed markedly reduced viral
