Plant-based functional and active agents in sustainable food packaging: a comprehensive review.

The shift to the circular economy has led to the use of plant-based functional ingredients in sustainable food packaging. Renewable, biodegradable, and non-toxic polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and biopolymers include alginate, chitosan, starch, cellulose, pectin, soy protein, and polylactic acid (PLA). Hydrophobization gives antibacterial, antioxidant, UV-protective, and pH-responsive properties. Lignin is an antioxidant, antibacterial, and UV-blocking filler. A blend of carboxymethyl chitosan and soy protein isolate has almost 100% antimicrobial effects against Escherichia coli (E. coli)

Comparative Outcome of Extraoral versus Intraoral Approaches in the Management of Isolated Zygomatic Arch Fractures: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital abnormality of gastrointestinal tract in children. Planar scintigraphy using Technetium-99m pertechnetate is widely used in the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum. Single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) fusion imaging may help to locate the Meckel's diverticulum lesion. We now present a Meckel's diverticulum case which tends to be missed. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was diagnosed with Mecke's diverticulum by planar scintigraphy in 2007. After seven years, a recurrence of hematochezia made the patie

Single-cell analysis reveals the diversity of human fetal membrane and adjacent placental cells with preterm premature rupture of membranes.

The occurrence of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) significantly impacts maternal and fetal health due to its association with the cellular composition and genetic changes of the fetal membrane. However, the specific cell type responsible for triggering PPROM and the underlying mechanisms are still largely unexplored. We employed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis on fetal membrane along with adjacent placental tissues about two centimeters from the umbilical cord obtained from women who delivered full-term in labor (FTIL), preterm premature without rupture of membra

Research progress on RNA m6A methylation modification mediating placental disorders induced by maternal stress†.

Maternal stress caused by the environmental factors varied in intrauterine and extrauterine during pregnancy may significantly affect placental and fetal development, as well as offspring health in adulthood. Epigenetic mechanisms are frequently invoked to elucidate these effects. RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification, one of the most prevalent and abundant post-transcriptional epigenetic modifications in eukaryotic mRNA, has recently garnered widespread attention in life sciences. RNA m6A modification plays critical roles in RNA splicing, translation, localization, stability, and has been

Loss of the maternal effect gene NLRP2 impairs embryonic and extra-embryonic development, revealing a novel genetic cause of congenital anomalies†.

Maternal effect genes (MEGs) play a crucial role in early mammalian development, and their dysfunction can lead to severe embryonic and extra-embryonic abnormalities. NLRP2, a MEG that encodes a subcortical maternal complex protein, has been implicated in preimplantation development, but its role after implantation remains underexplored. In this study, we investigated the developmental consequences of maternal Nlrp2 loss-of-function in a maternal knockout (KO) mouse model at embryonic day 11.5. Embryos derived from Nlrp2-KO females have abnormal yolk sac vasculature, increased embryonic resorp

From association to mechanism: Prenatal PFAS Co-exposures induces fetal neural tube defects via autophagy-mediated ferroptosis.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) represent severe congenital malformations whose environmental determinants remain incompletely understood. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), persistent environmental contaminants capable of crossing the placental barrier during critical developmental windows, have been linked to various adverse birth outcomes, yet their association with NTDs remains unclear. We combined population-based, animal, and cellular approaches to establish associations and explore relevant mechanisms. In a case-control study of 271 NTD and 391 controls, placental PFAS concentration

The Replacement Herbicide, l-Glufosinate, Induces Similar Developmental Effects as Racemic-Glufosinate.

The chiral herbicide glufosinate-ammonium (racemic-GLA) is banned in the European Union due to developmental toxicity. Its herbicidally active l-enantiomer (l-GLA), marketed as a potential safer alternative, lacks developmental toxicity assessment. This study investigated the reproductive/developmental toxicity of l-GLA and racemic-GLA in pregnant mice at 13 and 130 μg/kg/day, achieving serum concentrations below or comparable to those reported in humans. Prenatal exposure to l-GLA and racemic-GLA at both doses caused fetal growth restriction (FGR), an approximate 10% reduction in placental we

Recent research progress on pathophysiological mechanism and clinical treatment of recurrent spontaneous abortion and prethrombotic state.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) refers to three or more consecutive spontaneous abortions before the 20th week of gestation. According to the research data of World Health Organization, worldwide, RSA has affected about 1-5 % of women of childbearing age, bringing great physical damage and psychological pressure to patients. The etiology of RSA is very complex, involving genetic factors (couples chromosome abnormalities or embryo chromosome abnormalities), physiological and structural factors (uterine congenital malformations, etc.), endocrine disorders, immune system abnormalities and pr

Environmental pyridinium disinfectants impair cortisol metabolism via 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 2 inhibition: A cross-species risk evaluation.

11β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2), a key enzyme in glucocorticoid inactivation, is expressed in human and rat placentas and kidneys. However, the inhibitory effects of alkyl (C1-C20) pyridinium quaternary ammonium disinfectants (PYRs) on 11β-HSD2 remain unexplored. This study evaluated PYRs through inhibitory potency assays, mechanistic investigations, structure-activity relationship (SAR)/3D-QSAR modeling, and molecular docking using human and rat 11β-HSD2 enzymes. Human 11β-HSD2 inhibition by PYRs followed a distinct V-shaped trend: potency increased from C12 to C16 (IC50: C

Neuroplacental Interactions in early human development: Insights from selective acute neuronal necrosis.

INTRODUCTION: The correct development of the central nervous system depends largely on the last two trimesters of gestation and the early neonatal period. Neurological lesions are common in autopsies, being one of the most relevant, selective acute neuronal necrosis, a manifestation of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. This study aimed to analyse the distribution of selective acute neuronal necrosis (SANN) and its association with placental lesions, clinical factors and other central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities. METHODS: From 1090 autopsies performed, 205 cases (18.8 %) with SANN were i

Advances in Fetal Repair of Spina Bifida Integrating Prenatal Surgery, Stem Cells, and Biomaterials.

Spina bifida (SB) is a congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS), resulting from incomplete closure of the neural tube (NT) during early embryogenesis. Myelomeningocele (MMC), the most severe form of SB, leads to progressive neurological, orthopedic, and urological dysfunctions due to both NT developmental failure and secondary intrauterine injury ("two-hit hypothesis"). Prenatal repair of MMC has progressed considerably since the Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS, 2011) trial, which showed that open fetal surgery can decrease the need for shunting and improve motor

Dynamics of the Mammalian Placental Metabolome in Placentogenesis and Embryonic Development.

Mammalian placental metabolism is crucial for both placental and embryonic development. However, the metabolic profiles of placentas and their regulatory roles in placentogenesis and embryonic development at different developmental stages remain poorly characterized. To address these questions, we collect 501 mouse placentas spanning embryonic day (E) 8.5-14.5 and construct metabolomic-transcriptomic atlases of placentogenesis. Metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses reveal that placental samples from E8.5 to E14.5 are clustered into three separated states: E8.5, E9.5-10.5, and E11.5-14.5, pin

From light to sound: Seeing and hearing the placenta in health and disease.

The placenta is a pregnancy-specific organ, functioning as the maternal-fetal interface and mediating essential processes including exchange, protection, and endocrine regulation. Placental abnormalities contribute to the pathophysiology, onset, progression, and prognosis of major perinatal disorders, making imaging modalities that enable their detection and monitoring crucial. Ultrasound (US) imaging is the principal modality for placental imaging, providing structural assessment with B-mode and blood flow evaluation with Doppler mode. Furthermore, advanced techniques such as 3D power Doppler

Hemodynamics and transplacental oxygen exchange during intact cord resuscitation in control and congenital diaphragmatic hernia lambs.

Evolution of gas exchange during intact cord resuscitation (ICR) remains unexplored. We aimed to investigate changes in placental hemodynamics and gas exchange during ICR in lambs with and without congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Eight CDH lambs (4.2 kg, 4 females) and nine controls (3.9 kg, 3 females) underwent ICR. At 80 days gestation (term = 142 days), CDH was induced by diaphragmatic incision. After c-section at term, mean arterial pressure (MAP) was monitored via an aortic catheter. Umbilico-placental blood flow (Qup) was assessed with a flow transducer on the umbilical artery. Umb

Perinatal hyperandrogenization and immune activation in rodents model subtypes of autism.

Although increased maternal androgens, such as those in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), are associated with a higher incidence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring, a causal link has yet to be established. We assessed whether perinatal hyperandrogenization in a murine model recapitulates core ASD traits and compared this model to the maternal immune activation (MIA) model of ASD. Both models produced ASD-like phenotypes, yet they exhibited distinct behavioral subtypes and neurodevelopmental trajectories. Hyperandrogenized offspring showed greater reductions in social communication

High sensitivity ultrasound microvessel imaging for the assessment of placental health.

Placental insufficiency underlies common and clinically challenging pregnancy complications including fetal growth restriction, preeclampsia, and preterm birth. Although these disorders share impaired placental function, current clinical tools cannot reliably detect early or subtle vascular abnormalities while pregnancy is ongoing. Standard obstetric ultrasound lacks the sensitivity needed to visualize small vessel development; however, high sensitivity microvessel imaging has emerged as a promising tool that overcomes many limitations of conventional Doppler ultrasound. By leveraging high fra
