Influence of genotype-environment interaction on stress parameters during spontaneous farrowing in modern and traditional pig breeds housed in crates and pens.

The transition from farrowing crates to farrowing pens aims to improve animal welfare by enabling the expression of maternal behavioural profiles. This study examines the spontaneous farrowing process in both farrowing crates and pens for modern German Landrace (GL) and traditional German Saddleback (GS) pigs - two breeds with different breeding histories and adaptations to housing systems. The goal is to investigate whether, and how, both breeds benefit equally from farrowing pens. From the birth of the first piglet until 1 h after the last delivery (intrapartum; ip), half-hourly blood sample

Fetal Autopsy in Stillbirth: Its Acceptance and Role in Determining the Causes and Risk Factors in North India.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth is a major global health issue. The fetal autopsy is considered one of the primal diagnostic tools to determine the cause of stillbirth over MRI, ultrasound, and genetic testing. It is often the way to obtain a definitive diagnosis and can be helpful for families who are grieving the loss of a pregnancy. However, its acceptance is limited due to cultural, emotional, and logistical challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the acceptance of fetal autopsy and its role in identifying causative and risk factors for stillbirth in north India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross

The invisible killer: fetal vascular malperfusion in stillbirths without macroscopic cord abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the association between fetal vascular malperfusion (FVM) and the umbilical cord characteristics in stillbirth. FVM is a category of placental lesions consistent with restriction/interruption of fetal blood flow, frequently associated with a "cord accident". In some stillbirths, gross umbilical cord abnormalities unravel at birth, helping to elucidate the cause of death; however, other cases do not show any structural alterations and therefore these cases do not have an obvious cause of death. METHODS: Retrospective histopathological evaluation of singleton

Association of antepartum anemia and red blood cell mass with racial and ethnic disparities in transfusion rates after cesarean delivery: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Antepartum anemia among patients undergoing cesarean deliveries has increased over the past decades in the United States. We hypothesized that red blood cell (RBC) mass, reflecting both prepartum anemia and body mass index (BMI), predicts transfusion risk after cesarean delivery beyond racial/ethnic categories. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of cesarean deliveries from 2019 to 2021 was performed using the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. The outcome of interest was perioperative transfusion within 72 h of surgery. Multivariable logistic r

Evaluation of risk factors and pregnancy outcome of placenta previa in a long-term comparative single-center study.

OBJECTIVE: Based on the increased rate of Cesarean Sections over the last decades, a higher incidence of placenta previa has been observed. Placenta previa is one of the leading causes of major antepartum bleeding and is associated with increased feto-maternal morbidity rates. Therefore, determining risk factors is essential to improve the outcome of these high-risk pregnancies. This study aimed to determine risk factors and analyze the feto-maternal outcome of women with placenta previa. METHODS: A long-term retrospective study was performed at the Obstetric Department of University Hospital

A Study on Feto-Maternal Outcome Among Elderly Pregnant Women During the Intrapartum and Postpartum Period in a Tertiary Care Center.

INTRODUCTION: The rising incidence of pregnancies among older women, typically defined as those aged 35 and above, has raised concerns regarding both maternal and fetal health outcomes. Advanced maternal age is linked to various pregnancy complications, such as a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities, gestational hypertension, preterm birth, and other adverse outcomes. This prospective cohort study aimed to investigate maternal and fetal outcomes in this population of elderly pregnant women, shedding light on the risks and complications they face during pregnancy. The study also explored th

Early detection of subclinical ketosis and clinical diseases in dairy cows using peripartum motion activity.

Early detection of metabolic diseases like subclinical ketosis (SCK) and other disorders is crucial for animal welfare and economic efficiency. Automated monitoring systems become increasingly important here. This study examined motion activity of cows around calving and its suitability for early detection of SCK and clinical disorders. Activity data of 136 cows were collected over two weeks before to three weeks after calving and analyzed alongside blood test results for beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA). Cows were categorized as clinically sick (S) or healthy (H), with group H further subdivid

Postpartum Hemorrhage in Patients With a Low-Lying Placenta: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that a second- or third-trimester diagnosis of low-lying placenta imparts underappreciated risk for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS). To quantify this risk and to assess whether it varies by the specific distance of the placenta from the cervical os and low-lying placenta resolution status, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov , EMBASE, and Web of Science from database inception to April 30, 2024. METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: A total of 3,700

Natural cycle versus hormone replacement therapy as endometrial preparation in ovulatory women undergoing frozen-thawed embryo transfer: The COMPETE open-label randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Different endometrial preparation protocols are used prior to frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET). Optimization of endometrial preparation protocols is mandatory to improve live birth rate and obstetric and perinatal outcomes. In the Comparison of Endometrial Preparation Protocols for Frozen Embryo Transfer (COMPETE) trial, our primary objective is to evaluate whether natural cycles (NCs) lead to a higher live birth rate after the first FET cycle compared to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) cycles in women with a regular ovulatory cycle. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed a singl

Perinatal outcomes and predictors of placental abruption: a retrospective study in an Ethiopian tertiary care center.

BACKGROUND: Placental abruption is a critical obstetric condition characterized by the premature separation of the placenta from the uterus, leading to severe maternal and fetal complications. In Ethiopia, the maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality rates are alarmingly high, and placental abruption significantly contributes to these adverse outcomes. Despite its severity, there is a lack of comprehensive data on the burden, risk factors, and outcomes associated with placental abruption in the Ethiopian context. Thus, the study aimed to investigate the adverse perinatal outcomes of plac

Pregnancy-Related Acute Kidney Injury: Causes and Its Impact on Perinatal Outcomes-A Systematic Review.

Background: Pregnancy-Related Acute kidney injury (PRAKI) is a critical complication of pregnancy, defined by the sudden deterioration in renal function during gestation or within the initial six weeks postpartum. Pregnancy is thought to increase the risk of acute kidney injury (AKI) by 51%. This is linked to the anatomical alterations that occur during pregnancy and special conditions, such as preeclampsia/eclampsia. PRAKI's epidemiology and outcome vary between developed and developing nations. PRAKI is an uncommon entity in high-income countries; however, its incidence has recently increase

Two Morphologies in a Single Placenta With Placental Mesenchymal Dysplasia.

An ultrasound investigation of a 28-year-old woman in the second trimester of her second pregnancy was suggestive of molar changes of placenta. Sonographically, the placenta had two distinct appearances - a normal portion and an area of heterogeneous appearance with a cystic area. It covered the internal os. There was a single live foetus. The management of this unique entity was marked by extensive workup of the differentials, testing and counselling. The pregnancy was continued, but antepartum haemorrhage resulted at 31 weeks, requiring an emergency cesarean delivery. Postpartum haemorrhage

Perinatal clinical management of a rare ABh variant blood group.

BACKGROUND: The H antigen, precursor of the A and B blood groups, is a high-prevalence antigen. Very few H antigen-negative (H-) blood donors are available in the United Kingdom. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a second pregnancy in a 28-year-old woman with the very rare ABh phenotype, and the presence of anti-H, anti-A and anti-B. Only H- (Oh) and ABh phenotype red cells were compatible. Given the rarity of individuals with these phenotypes, there were insufficient compatible red cell units for management of a major antepartum or postpartum haemorrhage. For this high-risk pregnancy
