The role of autotaxin in pruritus and preterm labor in early-onset intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a common pregnancy-specific disorder characterized by pruritus and elevated serum total bile acids (TBA), and is associated with adverse outcomes such as preterm birth. This study aimed to investigate the role of autotaxin (ATX) in ICP-related pruritus and preterm labor. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 180 pregnant women (100 diagnosed with ICP and 80 healthy controls) recruited from the Affiliated Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital of Nantong University between 2024 and 2025. Serum TBA, ATX, pruritus scores, and

The Use of Different Local Anesthetics in Pregnant Women in Dentistry: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Despite the potential side effects of local anesthetics, they are indispensable for relieving pain and, consequently, reducing the patient's stress. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present research was to evaluate, through a systematic review, the different types of local anesthetics available for use in dental procedures in pregnant patients. METHODS: Electronic bibliographic searches were conducted to retrieve studies published from 2000 to 2024 concerning the use of local anesthetics in pregnant women in dentistry. Five studies were included in this review (2 case series, 2 co

Early predictive value of maternal peripheral blood circulating immune cell counts for spontaneous preterm birth.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the profiles of circulating immune cells in maternal peripheral blood in spontaneous preterm birth (SPB) and evaluate their potential for the early prediction of SPB, thereby providing a basis for clinical screening of preterm birth risk. METHODS: This study included 43 women with SPB (SPB group) and 129 women who delivered at term (term delivery group). Baseline characteristics (e.g. age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, obstetric history) were compared between the two groups. Peripheral blood samples were collected at 26 ± 1 weeks of gestation during routine antenata

Effect of antenatal care attendance on maternal and birth outcomes in Somaliland: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Antenatal care (ANC) plays a critical role in improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes. However, incomplete ANC attendance in Somaliland is associated with adverse maternal and birth outcomes. Barriers to ANC attendance may increase the risk of pregnancy-related complications, including maternal morbidity, mortality and poor neonatal health outcomes. Understanding the effect of ANC attendance on maternal and birth outcomes is crucial for informing policies and interventions aimed at reducing these risks. Hence, this study aimed to assess the effect of ANC attendance on matern

Impact of first-trimester preeclampsia screening on perinatal and maternal morbidity: the RANSPRE open multicenter randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) affects 2–8% of pregnant women and is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. In high-risk pregnant women, low-dose aspirin (LDA 100—160 mg/day) started before 16 WG reduces the incidence of PE, prematurity, perinatal mortality and low birth weight. First trimester screening of PE allows the identification of a population of pregnant women at high risk of early onset PE and perinatal mortality. It remains unclear whether, on a population scale, the systematic implementation of first trimester screening of PE with treatment of high-risk p

Leveling the start: cost-effectiveness of community-based doula care among Medicaid births∗.

BACKGROUND: Alabama consistently ranks among the worst states for infant health outcomes, facing a severe crisis marked by high preterm birth rates, and significant racial disparities. Doula support during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum is associated with improved birth experiences and outcomes, but access is limited for people with low income. As more states add Medicaid reimbursement for doula care, local evidence can inform benefit design and equity-focused maternal health strategies. We evaluate associations between doula services and maternal and infant health outcomes among Medica

Adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes among Palestinian adolescent mothers in the West Bank: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 13% of adolescent girls globally give birth before the age of 18. Several studies have shown that pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, puerperal infections, preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal death are more common in adolescent mothers than in adult mothers. This study aimed to investigate whether adolescent pregnancy increases the risk of adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes compared with pregnancies among women aged 20-35 years in the West Bank, occupied Palestinian territory. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study utilizing data extracted from the electr

Twin-twin transfusion syndrome in a dichorionic-diamniotic gestation with post-laser amniotic band sequence: A case report.

Twin-twin transfusion syndrome most commonly develops in monochorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancies but rarely has been documented in dichorionic pregnancies. Twin-twin transfusion syndrome can often be successfully treated with fetoscopic laser surgery; sequelae are infrequent but can include chorion-amnion membrane separation, preterm rupture of membranes, preterm delivery, neurodevelopmental delay, and, rarely, amniotic band syndrome. This report concerns the case of a 30-year-old nulligravid woman who presented for routine anatomy evaluation in the setting of a dichorionic-diamniotic monozy

Correlation between serum uric acid levels before delivery and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Currently, many cross-sectional studies have investigated the correlation between prenatal serum uric acid (SUA) levels and adverse pregnancy outcomes; however, studies with larger sample sizes and a more rational approach to confirm this correlation are lacking. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, baseline data and laboratory indicators of pregnant women before delivery were collected from multiple medical centers in Guizhou, China, from January 2010 to December 2020, encompassing data from 116725 women. Trends in adverse fetal outcomes across quartiles of SUA were assessed.
