Manganese dioxide nanozyme alleviates PEDV GIIc-associated growth retardation in neonatal piglets by improving antioxidant status, intestinal morphology, and manganese homeostasis.

INTRODUCTION: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) infection threatens swine production, and growth retardation in neonatal piglets born to infected sows requires practical intervention. This study evaluated the effects of oral manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanozyme supplementation on growth and physiological indices in these piglets. METHODS: In this study, 16 litters from PEDV GIIc-infected sows were assigned to four treatment groups according to body condition and PEDV RT-qPCR Ct value, with four litters from uninfected sows used as the negative control (NC). From 3 d of age to 21 d of age, p

Cluster investigation report: a probable urine-associated transmission event of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome-a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne viral disease with a high case fatality rate. Human-to-human transmission has been increasingly documented, primarily through direct contact with blood or bloody secretions. On June 21, 2025, a case of SFTS was reported in Zhumadian City, Henan Province. On July 3, a second case-epidemiologically linked to the first-was reported to the local Centers for Disease Control (CDC) through the notifiable disease reporting system, following laboratory confirmation on July 1. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old fem

Prolonged Active SARS-CoV-2 Infection in a Patient With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia on Venetoclax.

We report a case of prolonged active SARS-CoV-2 infection in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) receiving venetoclax. The patient demonstrated persistent symptoms over a span of 105 days and repeatedly positive SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. The case highlights the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in immunocompromised hosts, including limited guidance and drug availability. Management required multiple antiviral regimens and consideration of alternative therapies. This case underscores the need for further research that can inform more robust guidelines

Comparison of Non-invasive Diagnostic Methods for Helicobacter Pylori Infection Before and After Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a major contributor to peptic ulcer disease and other gastrointestinal disorders. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of treatment on diagnostic outcomes by comparing two non-invasive methods-the stool antigen test and the serological IgG antibody test, before and after therapy. This approach was designed to evaluate not only the diagnostic efficacy of these tools but also the changes in antibody responses following eradication treatment. METHODS: This observational study was conducted from 2021 to 2022 at Shahid Motahar

Anticoagulants beyond coagulation: repurposing heparin to mitigate immunothrombosis and inflammatory cascades in sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening syndrome caused by a dysregulated host response to infection, in which inflammation, coagulation, endothelial injury, and immune dysfunction interact to drive organ failure and death. Accumulating evidence identifies immunothrombosis as a central mechanism in this process, linking neutrophil extracellular traps, platelet activation, tissue factor expression, circulating histones, and glycocalyx degradation to microvascular collapse and multiple organ dysfunction. Although heparin has traditionally been used as an anticoagulant, its highly sulfated structure also pe

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome-associated encephalitis and intracranial hypotension: A case report.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is a natural infectious disease caused by severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). Central nervous system (CNS) involvement is not rare in SFTS. In this work, we report a case of SFTS with CNS symptom onset and the metagenomic next-generation sequencing of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), confirming invasion of SFTSV into the CNS. The case's lumbar puncture indicated an exceptionally low CSF opening pressure-an uncommon finding in other CNS infections and in case reports of SFTS. A spontaneous subdural effusion was observed on the

Exploring the Pathogenesis and Treatment Strategies of Post-Herpetic Neuralgia Based on the "Gut-Immune-Neural Axis": A Narrative Review.

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a prevalent and refractory neuropathic pain condition that arises after herpes zoster infection, characterized by complex pathophysiological mechanisms and limited efficacy of conventional treatments. Recent advances in the study of the gut-brain axis have expanded to encompass pain modulation, leading to the integrated concept of the "gut-immune-neural axis". This narrative review examines the proposed mechanisms by which gut microbiota may contribute to the onset and progression of PHN by modulating immune homeostasis, neuroinflammation, and neural plasticity.

Quantification of immunoglobulin G as an alternative method to the Miles Evans blue assay to measure vascular hyperpermeability induced by infection and sterile inflammation.

Vascular hyperpermeability is conventionally evaluated by the Miles Evans blue assay. The assay is based on the intravenous injection of Evans blue dye which binds non-covalently to albumin and remains within the blood vasculature. As a consequence of the vascular hyperpermeability associated with inflammation, the dye bound to albumin, extravasates from blood vessels along with macromolecules to accumulate in interstitial tissues at sites of inflammation. In the mouse model, Evans blue dye is injected intravenously through the lateral tail vein, a procedure that has a significant failure rate

Evaluating a multi-vaccine respiratory immunization strategy involving SARS-CoV-2, pneumococcal, and influenza vaccines in adults: A randomized, open-label, multicenter, controlled, non-inferiority Phase IV trial in China.

Co-administration of vaccines targeting multiple respiratory pathogens may enhance coverage and streamline adult immunization programs. We conducted a randomized, multicentre, open-label Phase IV trial registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2100046227) in China to evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of co-administering an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (WIBP-CorV) with the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) and a quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV4). A total of 1,404 adults aged ≥ 18 year, including equal numbers of adults aged 18-59 year and ≥6

Occupational health risks from climate-related and infectious-disease stressors: A scoping review of worker safety and resilience.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines how climate-related stressors and infectious-disease conditions, including pandemic-related workplace disruptions, interact to influence worker health, vulnerability, and occupational resilience. The review focuses on shared exposure pathways, vulnerable worker populations, methodological patterns, policy gaps, and strategies for strengthening worker safety under compound hazards. Rather than treating pandemics as isolated events, the review uses pandemic conditions as a lens to understand broader, recurring occupational risks and to inform strategies fo

Analysis of the impact of naturally-acquired immunity on Shigella vaccine performance to inform clinical trials: A simulation-based modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Effective vaccines against Shigella, the leading bacterial cause of diarrheal disease globally, could prevent morbidity and mortality from shigellosis as well as limit antibiotic resistance. Several Shigella vaccine candidates are in late stages of development, and the design of large Phase 3 trials in target populations is underway. In high incidence settings, children are expected to rapidly accrue natural immunity such that after repeated pathogen exposure, unvaccinated infants may have similar levels of immunity as vaccinated infants. For this reason, in these settings estimate

Global, regional and national burden of pertussis in 1990-2023: a Global Burden of Disease study.

Despite long-standing immunization programs, pertussis remains a major cause of vaccine-preventable mortality, particularly among infants. Here we present a primary assessment of global pertussis incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life years across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023. We show that despite short-term pandemic-period fluctuations, the dominant global pattern from 1990 to 2023 was long-term decline: age-standardized mortality decreased by 61.2% and age-standardized incidence by 41.6%. Relative to the anomalously low pandemic-period estimates, incidence and m

Spatial confinement promotes germinal center diversity and tempers immunodominance.

Germinal centers (GCs) form as confined clusters of motile cells within individual lymphoid follicles. The role of confinement in GC B cell evolutionary events is unknown. Here, using mice with reduced GC confinement because of deficiency in Gα13-dependent G-protein-coupled receptor signaling, we observed GC-GC trafficking in confinement-defective lymph nodes (LNs). In multicolor clonal lineage tracing mice, de-confined GCs minimally diversified their color palettes with respect to one another. Spatial B cell receptor sequencing revealed greater clonal crossover between neighboring GCs in the

An interferonopathy associated with a monoallelic variant in TRIM28.

BACKGROUND: In this work, we describe the clinical and functional changes in a family with a novel type I interferonopathy phenotype which we suggest could be associated with a TRIM28 variant, presenting with chilblains, skin ulceration, lipodystrophy and calcinosis. TRIM28 has multiple roles in regulating human health and disease, which include DNA repair and anti-viral response. The latter includes negative regulation of IRF7, one of the master regulators of the interferon response. METHODS: Whole exome sequencing and targeted panel sequencing was performed on DNA extracted from peripheral

Delayed Umbilical Extrusion of a Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Following Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Hysterectomy: A Case Report.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPSs) are the standard treatment for hydrocephalus but are associated with significant long-term complications, including distal catheter migration. Umbilical extrusion is an exceptionally rare manifestation, particularly in adults, and has seldom been described following minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. We report the case of a 35-year-old female patient with a VPS placed in early childhood who presented with persistent serous drainage from a prior umbilical port site four months after a robotic-assisted laparoscopic hysterectomy. Initial imaging demonstrate

Phenotypic Characterization of Multidrug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolated From Patients With Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia: Insights Into Resistance Mechanisms and Biofilm Formation.

Background In patients receiving mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICUs), ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a serious illness connected with healthcare. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa)is among the most often used pathogens linked to VAP and is increasingly characterized by multidrug resistance, β-lactamase production, and biofilm-forming ability. This study focused on assessing the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, prevalence of multidrug resistance, extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production, metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) production, and biofilm-forming abilit

Prognostic value of early point-of-care blood gas analysis in critically ill non-trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: Critically ill non-trauma patients treated in the emergency department have a high risk of in-hospital mortality. While point-of-care diagnostics such as blood gas analysis are established tools for urgent management, data on their prognostic value in this specific patient cohort remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether initial blood gas parameters are independently associated with in-hospital mortality in critically ill non-trauma patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult critically ill non-trauma patients treated in the emergency department of

Severe Hyponatremia as an Early Manifestation of Peritransplant Abscess After Living Donor Kidney Transplantation: A Case Report.

Electrolyte abnormalities are common after kidney transplantation, but severe hyponatremia as an early sign of occult peritransplant infection is rare. A 68-year-old woman underwent living unrelated kidney transplantation and was discharged on postoperative day 4 with a drain in place. On postoperative day 8, she developed acute kidney injury and profound hyponatremia, with a serum sodium level of 109 mmol/L, despite only mild fatigue and no fever, abdominal pain, allograft tenderness, or wound symptoms. Sodium improved with hypertonic saline, nutritional support, and fluid restriction. On pos
