The Authors examined surgical case studies for the 20-year period from February 1968 to February 1988 concerning hysterectomies performed for obstetric reasons at the "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department; these numbered 35 out of 69,677 births. They also considered hysterectomies carried out during caesarean sections, during birth or the postpartum period, during the puerperium and after miscarriage. They also analyzed reasons for the action taken, the type of operation, the length of the gestation period, the mother's age, and transfusions given.

The frequency of spontaneous premature rupture of membranes (PROM) was determined in the pregnancies of 1,848 white mothers and their singleton infants, born at the University of Kansas Medical Center between April 1975 and April 1978. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum relaxin and pregnancy outcome in a group of patients pregnant after in vitro fertilization (IVF). Patients who delivered a single live infant at term after IVF had mean serum levels of relaxin more than double the mean levels in normal antenatal patients. The high relaxin levels were compatible with delivery at term. However, because of the proposed role of relaxin in the process of cervical ripening, the high serum levels may help explain the high rate of preterm labor observed among IVF patients.

A retrospective study of triplet pregnancies is presented. Data concerning 24 triplet pregnancies which were followed up to delivery and for a period of 11 years afterwards at the Maternity Center of the Antoine Beclere Hospital, are analysed. Early diagnosis of triplet pregnancy leads to a strong prognostic indication for prematurity. This allows time to institute preventive measures principally by reducing maternal physical activity. In a representative questionnaire investigation covering all of Denmark, 3,152 women provided information about their health during a recent pregnancy. By means of 522 singles in breech presentation the pH of umbilical artery (pH u. a.) and Apgar score in comparison to the mode of delivery, duration of pregnancy and weight of neonates have been analysed. During the period 1.9.1985-21.2.1988, 143 patients commenced and completed treatment with in vitro fertilization and embryo-transfer (IVF-ET) in Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. Abdominal pregnancy is rare; conjoined twins are also rare. The diagnosis of abdominal pregnancy is easily missed and often not made until near full-term. Similarly conjoined twins are not diagnosed until late in gestation or during parturition. In this case, the diagnosis of conjoined twins and abdominal pregnancy was only made during laparotomy.

All second twins delivered by cesarean section (CS) after vaginal birth of the first twin (n = 38) and all breech-extracted second twins (n = 282) in Sweden during 1973-81 were identified. Data from the medical records of all CS second twins were extracted and compared with breech-extracted second twins from the same departments born within 2 years of the CS twin (n = 25). Second twins delivered after maternal general anesthesia had lower 5-min Apgar scores, irrespective of mode of delivery. Maternal morbidity was substantial in the CS group. The premature closure of the ductus arteriosus (pcDA) due to maternal tocolysis with indomethacin in the 34th week of gestation was diagnosed in a twin pregnancy. We report five patients with phaeochromocytoma associated with pregnancy and review the 42 other cases reported in the literature from 1980 to 1987. The overall maternal mortality was 17% and the fetal loss 26%; antenatal diagnosis of phaeochromocytoma reduced the maternal mortality to zero and the fetal loss to 15%, but was made in only 53% of the patients. A total of 10,909 puerperal women from 6 different hospitals were screened for bacteriuria by culture of voided midstream urine (MSU), and a significant growth was found in 881 patients (8.1%). In 731 cases the urine was reexamined by using suprapubic aspiration (SPA), and in only 354 (48%) of the samples the diagnosis of bacteriuria was confirmed. Early ectopic pregnancies often are unrecognized in rural areas of Papua New Guinea. Some of these untreated tubal pregnancies abort into the peritoneal cavity and continue as advanced abdominal pregnancies.
