Organized public medical services were profoundly disturbed during the 4 months of the physicians' strike in 1983. An unknown proportion of patients were referred to private services, but only a minority of them attended the alternative centers. The findings during the strike and the following 6 months were compared with those of the year 1982. The incidence of high-risk cases and of multiple and premature deliveries were unchanged. Human urinary FSH (HU-FSH) was administered during 25 treatment cycles to 21 infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO) who had failed to conceive in response to clomiphene citrate. Endometritis is an infectious complication in 9% to 65% of patients delivered by cesarean section. The risk of developing endometritis is greater in the high-risk emergent patient as compared to routine repeat abdominal deliveries. Triplet pregnancy of over 20 weeks gestation occurred 20 times during 75,506 deliveries at a referral hospital. Commonly occurring maternal complications included premature delivery (75%), antepartum anemia (35%), postpartum hemorrhage (35%), preeclampsia (20%), and premature spontaneous rupture of the membranes (20%). A 25-year-old primigravida with bilateral phaeochromocytomas was managed from 6 weeks' gestation until 2.5 years following combined Caesarean section and removal of adrenal tumours. Pre-operative alpha-blockade was achieved by oral prazosin without deleterious effects. Intra-operative management comprised neuroleptanalgesia, arterial and pulmonary pressure monitoring, adequate heart loading with fluid replacement and sodium nitroprusside. A single 5-gm dose of mezlocillin or a placebo was administered intravenously 30 minutes before surgery to patients undergoing emergency cesarean section.
