Pregnancy protein beta-1-glycoprotein levels were determined in serum obtained from 100 women with undisturbed pregnancy and 35 women with high risk pregnancy. Concentrations lower than normal, i.e. below the 1s range, were found only in preeclampsia and in pregnancies with intrauterine growth retardation. Antepartum CTG scoring showed reasonable correlation with the SP-1 values. Due to its long half life time and its relation to the trophoblast, the diagnostic value of SP-1 in cases of placental insufficiency is limited.

In the period reported there were 244 (1.036%) twin pregnancies out of 23,535 deliveries. From 1959 to 1968 the incidence was 1.133% and from 1969 to 1978 0.946% (P < 0.05). We compared prior pregnancy histories of two groups of multigravidas--240 women having a pregnancy loss up to 28 weeks' gestation and 1,072 women having a term delivery. Women who had had two or more prior induced abortions had a twofold to threefold increase in risk of first-trimester spontaneous abortion, loss between 14 to 19 and 20 to 27 weeks. The increased risk was present for women who had legal induced abortions since 1973. We reviewed 5,003 records of consecutive deliveries in 1975 and 1976 at Boston Hospital for Women, abstracted demographic and obstetric data, and analyzed singleton deliveries at 27 weeks' gestation or greater. Clinical records of a total of 3320 singleton births, representing the year 1978, at the two Tientsin Medical College Hospitals, Tientsin, People's Republic of China, were studied to ascertain (a) reproductive parameters such as the average age of the mothers at first and successive births and (b) the relationships between perinatal deaths, prematurity and birth weight and the mothers's age, number of previous pregnancies, parity, maternal conditions in the prenatal and delivery period and operative procedures of delivery.

Data on 570 mothers and their children whose development was personally assessed from birth to four years were analysed. Strong associations were found between the incidence of fetal distress during labour, birth asphyxia, and delivery by emergency caesarean section. Four cases of neonatal urinary ascites are added to the previous reported 46 cases. Three are males with posterior urethral valves, and one is a female whose bladder was ruptured during traumatic breech extraction. The renal site of urine extravasation was verified by retrograde pyelogram in one instance and operative exploration in another. If relief of the lower urinary tract obstruction does not resolve the ascites, percutaneous or open nephrostomy tube placement on the side of extravasation is advised. With this approach all the patients have survived and now have normal renal function.

To determine the pathogenesis of neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia after oxytocin-induced labour venous cord blood from 95 healthy newborn infants was examined. Analysis of computer-stored State of Missouri birth and death records over a 5 year period revealed 3,594 twin pregnancies (1.02% of all pregnancies), which accounted for 10.1% of the perinatal deaths. The mean birth weight according to weeks of gestation was computed for the pregnancies with no complications noted prior to labor and the perinatal mortality rate was determined. A case is reported of fetus papyraceus diagnosed intrapartum. There was no clinical evidence in early and midpregnancy to suggest such a diagnosis. Ultrasound examination performed 1 week prior to delivery was nondiagnostic, but an x-ray taken intrapartum revealed dystocia caused by fetus papyraceus, thus necessitating cesarean section. It is suggested that the clinician consider x-ray as well as ultrasound in the diagnosis of fetus papyraceus.
