A detailed retrospective analysis was made of the records of 486 preterm infants, who accounted for 5-1% of all births during 1973 and 1974. Whereas preterm delivery did not contribute to perinatal mortality in terms of stillbirth, it outweighed all other causes in terms of early neonatal deaths. Two pregnant women with chronic active viral hepatitis (HBs Ag+) and cirrhosis are described. A quintuplet gestation after ovulation induction with clomiphene and HCG is described. This is the first quintuplet birth reported in Israel. The pregnancy was associated with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, toxemia of pregnancy, and pruritus gravidarum. Diagnosis and management of these cases pose a special problem for the obstetrician and neonatologist. The problem of multiple pregnancies and their control in the treatment of infertility with ovulation-inducing drugs is discussed.

A case history is presented of a patient with 8 consecutive caesarean sections over 1965--1973. Total hysterectomy was performed during the last section because of thinned uterine wall, marginal placenta praevia and heavy bleeding. A retrospective study of congenital malformations in the offspring of 20 women who received antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy is presented. Of 56 births, 9 children (16%) were born with malformations. Four children were born dead or died shortly after delivery. Congenital heart disease, cleft lip with or without cleft palate, neural tube defects, and skeletal abnormalities were the commonest anomalies found. The unstable hip can be diagnosed in newborns with acceptable accuracy. The following factors are associated with the newborn unstable hip: female preponderance, breech presentations, cesarean section deliveries, first borns, left hip involvement, the Caucasian race, and increased birth weight. These findings suggest that the newborn unstable hip is determined prior to delivery, possibly within the last 4 weeks of intrauterine life. Diagnosed at birth, treatment in the average case is relatively short-term, effective, and without complication.
