A Comparative Analysis for Inhospital and Postdischarge Puerperal Sepsis (Readmissions) Among Mothers Admitted in Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Puerperal sepsis is defined as an infection of the genital tract occurring within 42 days after delivery. It is characterized by symptoms such as chills, fever, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, and delayed uterine involution. The condition is more prevalent in low-income countries, with Uganda among those reporting higher rates. Puerperal sepsis can be acquired either during the initial birth hospital admission or after discharge, resulting in readmission. Although the risk of infection exists during the antenatal period, it increases significantly during delivery an

Screening of Bacterial Vaginosis in Antenatal Women Between 18 and 24 Weeks of Gestational Age and Its Association With Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes, Preterm Labour, and Early Neonatal Outcomes: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study.

Background Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common lower genital tract infection among women of reproductive age and has been consistently associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. During pregnancy, disruption of the normal Lactobacillus-dominant vaginal flora may predispose women to ascending infections, increasing the risk of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) and preterm labour (PTL). Objective The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis among antenatal women between 18 and 24 weeks of gestation and to evaluate its association with preterm prema

Body site-specific micro- and lactobiota in genitourinary infections during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Immunological, metabolic, and hormonal changes occur during pregnancy, which can affect the composition and function of the microbiota in diverse body sites. These changes can influence pregnancy outcomes and the health of the mother and baby. We aimed to characterize the microbiota of pregnant women across various body sites and examine the clinical and population-specific factors associated with its composition. The role of lactobacilli in genitourinary infections during pregnancy was analyzed as well. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and five pregnant women with gestational ag

Current Advances in Lipid-Based Drug Delivery Systems as Nanocarriers for the Management of Female Genital Tuberculosis.

Female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) arises from Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and can rarely be caused by Mycobacterium bovis or atypical mycobacteria. FGTB usually arises from tuberculosis (TB) that affects the lungs or other organs. The infection can enter the vaginal tract directly from abdominal TB or by hematogenous or lymphatic pathways. Menstrual dysfunction and infertility as a result of genital organ damage result from FGTB, which affects women's fallopian tubes, uterine endometrium, and ovaries. Consequently, FGTB remains a major worldwide health risk, posing challenges in its

Vaginal colonization with virulent and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus among Ugandan women in Labour.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) often colonizes the human skin, upper respiratory and genital tracts. In the female genital tract, it can be passed on to the newborn during vaginal delivery leading to either ordinary colonization, or neonatal infections notably umbilical stump sepsis, scalded skin syndrome, arthritis, or bacteraemia/sepsis. These infections are mediated by staphylococcal virulence factors such as (i) Staphylococcal Enterotoxins A, B, C, D, and E encoded by the sea, seb, sec, sed, see genes, (ii) Exfoliative Toxins A and B encoded by the eta and etb genes, (iii) T

Fabrication and characterization of bioprints with Lactobacillus crispatus for vaginal application.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by low levels of lactobacilli and overgrowth of potential pathogens in the female genital tract. Current antibiotic treatments often fail to treat BV in a sustained manner, and > 50% of women experience recurrence within 6 months post-treatment. Recently, lactobacilli have shown promise for acting as probiotics by offering health benefits in BV. However, as with other active agents, probiotics often require intensive administration schedules incurring difficult user adherence. Three-dimensional (3D)-bioprinting enables fabrication of well-defined archi

OBJECTIVE: Circ-centro-some/spindle pole-associated protein (CSPP1) has been confirmed to be characterized in diverse human malignancies and its ectopic expression may regulate tumor progression and development. However, in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), its biological role, clinical significance and molecular mechanism are still unclear. METHODS: Circ-CSPP1 expression and its prognostic values in HCC tissues were detected by qRT-PCR or in situ hybridization (ISH), and enriched by using Rnase R. The functional experiments (Circ-CSPP1 was overexpressed or knocked down) were performed in HCC c

Detection of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) -specific cell-mediated immune responses in guinea pigs during latent HSV-2 genital infection.

Genital infections with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) are a source of considerable morbidity and are a health concern for newborns exposed to virus during vaginal delivery. Additionally, HSV-2 infection diminishes the integrity of the vaginal epithelium resulting in increased susceptibility of individuals to infection with other sexually transmitted pathogens. Understanding immune protection against HSV-2 primary infection and immune modulation of virus shedding events following reactivation of the virus from latency is important for the development of effective prophylactic and therapeu

Vigilance must be a priority: maternal genital tract sepsis.

Although very rare in the UK, sepsis was the leading cause of direct maternal deaths during 2006-2008, with an increase in community acquired Group A streptococcal infection (CMACE 2011). Most deaths occurred in the postnatal period and were often preceded by a sore throat or other upper respiratory infection, with a clear seasonal pattern. An associated factor was women of BME origin (black or minority ethnic origin). More than half of the deaths followed birth by caesarean section. All antenatal and postnatal women should be offered advice on the signs and symptoms of life threatening condit
