Vaginal colonization with virulent and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus among Ugandan women in Labour.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) often colonizes the human skin, upper respiratory and genital tracts. In the female genital tract, it can be passed on to the newborn during vaginal delivery leading to either ordinary colonization, or neonatal infections notably umbilical stump sepsis, scalded skin syndrome, arthritis, or bacteraemia/sepsis. These infections are mediated by staphylococcal virulence factors such as (i) Staphylococcal Enterotoxins A, B, C, D, and E encoded by the sea, seb, sec, sed, see genes, (ii) Exfoliative Toxins A and B encoded by the eta and etb genes, (iii) T

Epidemiological trends and risk factors related to lower urinary tract symptoms around childbirth: a one-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are prevalent and distressing concerns for women worldwide. The prevalence of LUTS reaches the first peak during pregnancy and postnatal period. However, less attention has been paid to LUTS around childbirth and little progress has been made in the prevention of LUTS. Understanding the epidemiological characteristics of LUTS around childbirth would inform decision making for health care providers and perinatal women in the prevention of LUTS. The study aims to investigate the epidemiological trends and associated risk factors related to LUTS aro

Exploring the chondroitin sulfate nanogel's potential in combating nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin and doxorubicin-An in-vivo study on rats.

In this study, we aim to unveil the potential of itaconyl chondroitin sulfate nanogel (ICSNG) in tackling chronic kidney diseases triggered by the administration of CDDP and doxorubicin (Adriamycin, ADR). To that end, the new drug delivery system (ICSNG) was initially prepared, characterized, and loaded with the target drugs. Thereafter, the in-vivo studies were performed using five equally divided groups of 100 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Biochemical evaluation and immunohistochemistry studies have revealed the renal toxicity and the ameliorative effects of ICSNG on renal function. When IC

Fabrication and characterization of bioprints with Lactobacillus crispatus for vaginal application.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by low levels of lactobacilli and overgrowth of potential pathogens in the female genital tract. Current antibiotic treatments often fail to treat BV in a sustained manner, and > 50% of women experience recurrence within 6 months post-treatment. Recently, lactobacilli have shown promise for acting as probiotics by offering health benefits in BV. However, as with other active agents, probiotics often require intensive administration schedules incurring difficult user adherence. Three-dimensional (3D)-bioprinting enables fabrication of well-defined archi

Six vs 12 hours of Foley catheter balloon placement in the labor induction of multiparas with unfavorable cervixes: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Planned 6- vs 12-hour placement of the double-balloon catheter for cervical ripening in labor induction hastens delivery. The Foley catheter is low-priced and typically performs at least as well as the proprietary double-balloon devices in labor induction. Maternal satisfaction with labor induction is usually inversely related to the speed of the process. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare Foley balloon placement for 6 vs 12 hours in the labor induction of multiparas with unfavorable cervixes. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial was conducted in a university hospital

Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Levels of Device-Associated Infections and Hand Hygiene Compliance.

Background Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) have been a major issue in intensive care units (ICUs), contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. They affect patients during the delivery of health care in hospitals where such infections were not present at the time of admission. Meanwhile, the course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may necessitate the transfer of critically ill patients to ICUs. Patients who need ICU services due to COVID-19 share similar underlying comorbidities, making them prone to microbiological infection. We aim to investigate the impact of the COVID-1

Evaluating Factors That Influence Health Care Resource Utilization in Transurethral Resection of Prostate.

Introduction: Transurethral resection of prostate (TURP) remains the gold standard for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, but it is associated with complications. The association of health care resource utilization (HRU) and TURP has been poorly studied. We seek to evaluate HRU in patients undergoing TURP and identify factors contributing to outcomes. Methods: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) database was reviewed from 2012 to 2018 for TURP by Current Procedural Terminology code. All data will be deidentified with IRB exemption. HRU was defined as discharge

Nurse-Sensitive Indicator Quality Improvement Toolkit: A Scalable Solution to Improve Health Care-Associated Infections.

BACKGROUND: Existing best practices to monitor and prevent health care-associated infections (HAIs) were ineffective during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased patient susceptibility toward infections, reduced resources, and increased use of agency nurses. PROBLEM: A review of the US hospitals revealed a 60% increase in central line-associate bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and a 43% increase in catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) in 2020. A large, academic, level 1 trauma center in Houston, Texas, experienced similar challenges at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. AP

Vaginal microbiota in women with spontaneous preterm labor versus those with term labor in Kenya: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is a global problem with about 12% of births in sub-Saharan Africa occurring before 37 weeks of gestation. Several studies have explored a potential association between vaginal microbiota and preterm birth, and some have found an association while others have not. We performed a study designed to determine whether there is an association with vaginal microbiota and/or placental microbiota and preterm birth in an African setting. METHODS: Women presenting to the study hospital in labor with a gestational age of 26 to 36 weeks plus six days were prospectively enrolled
