Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) are separate but related aspects of the same dynamic disease process known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). Recent community studies have shown that VTE is a major health issue for the developed world, with at least 201,000 new cases each year in the United States, comprising 107,000 with DVT and 94,000 with PE. A quarter of PE cases die within 7 days, some so rapidly that treatment or intervention is impossible. Despite the availability of heparin prophylaxis, the annual incidence of VTE has remained constant at 1 event per 1,000 person-y

Pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism. The rate of occurrence of this complication has not been reported from this area previously. The aim of this study was to establish the incidence of venous thromboembolism in pregnancy and puerperium by using objective diagnostic methods. From January 1986 to December 1998, 39,757 deliveries were registered at King Fahad Hospital, Al Baha, and 59 of these were referred to hematology services with a clinical suspicion of venous thromboembolism. The majority (86%) of these underwent objective diagnostic methods such as asc

Thromboembolic events are among the leading causes of maternal mortality. Mutations in the genes for clotting factors are known, but anamnestic factors can be found in a proportion of women with deep venous thromboses (DVT) during pregnancy and the puerperium. We here describe the clinical factors and pregnancy outcomes of such a group of 70 women who were all operated on for DVT. Highest risk is conferred by a familial history of clotting disease and by known mutations of the clotting factors. This might be used to target a high risk group for preventive treatment.

Venous thromboembolism occurs infrequently but is a leading cause of illness and death during pregnancy and the puerperium and remains a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. In the general population the incidence of pregnancy associated VTE has been estimated to vary from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 2000 deliveries. The risk of VTE is five times higher in a pregnant woman than in a nonpregnant woman of similar age. Postpartum VTE is more common than antepartum VTE. Women with congenital abnormalities or persistent presence of antiphospholipid antibodies have an increased risk of VTE during pregnancy a

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) results from multiple interactions between inherited and environmental risk factors. The lower limbs are the most common site of VTE, but more rarely other venous sites can be involved. The role of risk factors for VTE can be different in the various thrombotic manifestations, and there are specific risk factors for specific sites. Coagulation abnormalities causing inherited thrombophilia are frequently found in patients with cerebral vein thrombosis, but are more rare in those with "isolated" pulmonary embolism, upper limb or retinal vein thrombosis. Transient sit

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine risk factors for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism during pregnancy or post partum.
STUDY DESIGN: We performed a population-based case-control study. All Olmsted County, Minnesota, residents with a first lifetime deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism during pregnancy or post partum from 1966 to 1990 were identified (N = 90). Where possible, a resident without deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism was matched to each patient by date of the first live birth after the patient's child. The medical records of all remaining patients and all cont

We report a patient who presented with a left proximal deep vein thrombosis at 25 + 5 weeks gestation. She developed a severe urticarial rash 3 weeks following initiation of therapy with Enoxaparin. The patient was heterozygous for the factor V Leiden mutation. She was treated with subcutaneous twice-daily danaparoid (Orgaran) for the remainder of the pregnancy, achieving anti-Xa levels in the therapeutic range 0.5-1.0 IU/ml. Delivery was at term by caesarean section 2 days after spontaneous rupture of membranes and failure to progress in labour. Danaparoid was withheld during this time. Danap

This study was undertaken to assess incidence of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary emboli in an inner-city pregnant population. Thromboembolic disease is believed to occur in 0.05 to 0.1 per cent of all pregnancies. Historically, postpartum thromboembolic disease was more common; decreased hospital stay may shift the thromboembolic disease to the antepartum period. A 5-year retrospective review of 4910 births assessed for incidence of thromboembolic disease, methods of diagnosis and treatment, and risk factors. A total of 4910 deliveries with 3978 transvaginal resulted in 30 episodes of dee

Authors discussed the known risk factors of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is complex disease with two manifestations: deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Acquired risk factors of VTE are following: age over 40 years, bed rest, surgery, trauma, cancer, myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, use of oral contraceptives, hormone-replacement therapy, pregnancy and puerperium, previous VTE, long lasting travel and presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. Group of genetic defects predisposing to thromboembolic events are called thrombophilia. The best known causes of thro

Venous thrombosis, whose main clinical presentations include deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, represents a major health problem worldwide. Numerous conditions are known to predispose to venous thrombosis and these conditions are commonly referred to as risk indicators or risk factors. Generally accepted or "classically" acquired risk factors for venous thromboembolism include advanced age, prolonged immobilisation, surgery, fractures, use of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, pregnancy, puerperium, cancer and antiphospholipid syndrome. In addition to these well-es

The association between long haul travel and the risk of venous thromboembolism are suspected for long time. Mostly air travel related thrombosis series have been reported in the literature. Risk factors can be classified as: 1. travel related factors (coach position, immobilization, prolonged air travel, narrow seat and room, diuretic effect of alcohol, insufficient fluid intake, dehydration, direct pressure on leg veins, rare inspiration). 2. air plane related risk factors (low humidity, relative hypoxia, stress). 3. patient related factors (hereditary and acquired thrombophylia, previous de

We encountered 16 cases of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in women during pregnancy and/or puerperium over the past 15 years at our perinatal center, representing 0.14% of all patients who delivered babies. The present study was undertaken to analyze the risk factors, clinical course and outcomes in these 16 cases. The ages of the patients varied from 29 to 39 years. Four women had pulmonary embolism (PE), 3 of which after caesarean section (C/S) at 35 to 40 weeks, and one case after ovarian cystectomy at 13 weeks of gestation. Twelve cases had deep venous thrombosis (DVT), 4 of which during pre

PURPOSE: To underline the crucial role of urgent echocardiography in the differential diagnosis of acute respiratory and/or circulatory failure in the postpartum period.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 24-yr-old woman was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with a preliminary diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) one week after Cesarean section. Neither computerized tomography nor Doppler sonography showed any signs of deep venous thrombosis or PE. In the ICU she required intubation and ventilatory support for acute respiratory and circulatory failure. Bedside echocardiography revealed features of

We report for the first time on a puerperal ovarian vein thrombophlebitis associated with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II. Two weeks after cesarean section with subsequent prophylactic application of heparin a thrombosis in the left deep femoral and pelvic veins and in the right ovarian vein occurred. Despite only moderately reduced platelet count a heparin-induced thrombocytopenia type II was diagnosed by heparin-induced platelet activation test. By treatment with plasmin activator lysis the thrombus was diminished. An operative procedure had been prevented. We conclude that also in

OBJECTIVES: To describe the occurrence of cerebral venous thrombosis in a 40-year-old man whose cerebral event was induced by a poor golf swing, to review the literature on possible mechanisms producing venous thrombosis, and to compare this case with the literature.
BACKGROUND: Headache is the most frequent symptom in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis. However, patients presenting with a headache due to cerebral venous thrombosis are uncommon. The known risk factors for thrombosis include both acquired and genetic factors. When the interaction of these two groups occurs, the magnitude

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains the leading cause of maternal death. Today, various risk factors and conditions are known to increase the risk for VTE associated with pregnancy. Having identified the individual risk of a pregnant women, appropriate preventive measures can be taken. If VTE occurs during pregnancy, an appropriate immediate diagnostic work-up is essential in order to avoid further complications. For deep vein thrombosis (DVT) the diagnostic tool of choice is color-coded duplex-sonography, for pulmonary embolism (PE) perfusion/ventilation lung scan can be used. Integrating a
