Women with a history of venous thromboembolisms (VTEs) and/or thrombophilia are at increased risk of VTE during pregnancy. We analysed our cohort of such women who were treated with a prophylactic doses of dalteparin. 152 pregnant women with 179 pregnancies were classified into 3 groups: (1) previous VTE without thrombophilia (122 pregnancies); (2) previous VTE with thrombophilia (26 pregnancies) and (3) thrombophilia only (31 pregnancies). They were treated with prophylactic dalteparin in the prepartum and postpartum periods or only in the postpartum period. Occurrences of symptomatic VTE and

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, with postpartum period carrying the greatest risk. Perinatal thromboprophylaxis is often administered based on risk-factor assessment. Low molecular weight heparin has a proven safety profile in the obstetrics population, however, its porcine-derived content may lead to reduced uptake amongst certain religious groups. We aimed to evaluate the safety of fondaparinux as an alternative postpartum thromboprophylaxis. Methods: We conducted a prospective, single arm, open label study from

The aims of this study are to evaluate coagulation and fibrinolytic features using TEG6s® in normal pregnant courses, in the early postpartum period and in cases with postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) caused by uterine atony. We also analyze cases with deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE) under treatment with unfractionated heparin. The non-pregnant women (n = 13) and healthy pregnant women (at 9-13 weeks of gestation (n = 13), at 27-30 weeks of gestation (n = 14), at 35-38 weeks of gestation (n = 14)) were cross-sectionally studied, while the normal pregnant women at delivery

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), manifesting as pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), is the most common cause of morbidity and death during pregnancy and the postpartum period. We conducted this study to describe the predictors of pregnancy-associated VTE (DVT and PE).
METHODS: A case-control study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Riyadh. A total of 380 patients were included in this study, 180 of whom were diagnosed with pregnancy-associated thrombosis and 200 of them showed no VTE. Demographic data and data on risk factors of VTE were collected by review

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism is a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, and thromboprophylaxis is indicated in pregnant and post-partum women with a history of venous thromboembolism. The optimal dose of low-molecular-weight heparin to prevent recurrent venous thromboembolism in pregnancy and the post-partum period is uncertain.
METHODS: In this open-label, randomised, controlled trial (Highlow), pregnant women with a history of venous thromboembolism were recruited from 70 hospitals in nine countries (the Netherlands, France, Ireland, Belgium, Norway, Den

Literature regarding the management of thrombus refractory to first-line treatment in the setting of pregnancy is limited, and management is made even more complicated in the context of thrombophilia. This case reviews the management of a patient with antithrombin deficiency who developed a massive thrombus during pregnancy, which was complicated by May-Thurner syndrome, lack of improvement with heparin, and preterm labor. The patient received multidisciplinary care throughout the pregnancy. At 35 weeks, anticoagulation was paused as she underwent induction of labor and delivery followed by po

Introduction Since the emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic in March 2020, research and guidance have been published with regard to the management of infection and considerations in pregnancy, but much is still unknown. Pregnant women with COVID-19 infection are more likely to be hospitalized and are at increased risk for intensive care unit admissions and intubation than nonpregnant women with COVID-19 infection. The optimal timing of delivery among pregnant women with COVID-19 infection has not been established at this time, especially when the infection arises in

Pregnancy and the postpartum period represent a condition characterized by a thrombotic predisposition. The majority of pregnant women do not face acute or severe thrombotic events. In general, mild inconveniences such as leg swelling or moderately painful thrombotic events (phlebitis) are encountered. However, when pregnancy is associated with inherited or acquired deficits that affect homeostasis, the risk of acute or even life-threatening events can increase significantly. The major consequence is the loss of the fetus or the venous thromboembolism that endangers the mother's life. Venous t

BACKGROUND: Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is a relatively serious complication commonly seen in pregnant women, especially parturients with pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), whose incidence of DVT is higher. Because it can lead to pulmonary embolism (PE) and endanger the lives of patients, it has been paid much attention in clinic. Nursing plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of DVT. Early posture intervention can prevent postpartum DVT in hypertensive pregnant women, which has certain clinical value, but there is no evidence of evidence-based medicine. This study aims to

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has become one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. Thromboprophylaxis is recommended for the prevention of this condition; however, its use appears to be insufficient. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the missed opportunities for VTE prophylaxis in hospitals that provide maternal healthcare in mainland China.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey-based study, we collected case data on pregnant and puerperal women with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism from January 1st to December 31st, 2019. Demographics, obste

BACKGROUND: In Japan, the numbers of deliveries by women of older maternal age and women with overweight or obesity have recently increased. Since 2008, the guidelines and practices to prevent the maternal venous thromboembolism (VTE) have been recommended antepartum and postpartum thromboprophylaxis for each risk level of VTE. This study aimed to clarify the incidence and characteristics (type of VTE and thromboprophylaxis) of VTE in pregnant women in Japan to reduce the rate of mortality from VTE METHODS: Of 2299 institutions sent the surveillance questionnaire, 666 (29.0%) responded, and da

COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-19) is associated with an increased risk for thrombosis due to endothelial dysfunction and hyperactivation of the immune system induced by the virus. Most cases of venous thromboembolism associated with COVID-19 are either pulmonary emboli or deep vein thromboses. Ovarian vein thrombosis is a rare condition most commonly seen in the postpartum period. This report describes a case of COVID-19-associated ovarian vein thrombosis in a nonpregnant woman with no evidence of underlying inherited coagulopathy.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality. Rates of VTE during pregnancy and the postpartum period have not decreased over the past two decades and pregnancyassociated VTE continues to pose a significant health challenge. Pregnant and postpartum women are at a higher risk for VTE owing to many factors. There are hormonally mediated and pregnancy-specific alterations of coagulation that favor thrombosis, including increased production of clotting factors. There are physiologic and anatomic mechanisms that also contribute, including a decreased rate of venou

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients. Studies have reported an incidence of deep venous thrombosis to be as high as 50%, especially after craniotomy. Several factors are involved in the alteration of the specificity and sensitivity of D-dimer testing. These include symptom duration, the extent of fibrinolytic and thrombosis activity, anticoagulant therapy, comorbidity associated with medical or surgical illness, cancer, inflammatory diseases, old age, postpartum, and pregnancy period, as well as previous VTE. Several studies have

This study aims to emphasize that asymptomatic patients with undiagnosed and asymptomatic May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) may firstly develop severe compression during pregnancy. A 40-year-old woman, G1P0, at 22 weeks of twin gestation presented with left lower extremity edema and pain. One twin was structurally normal while the other had bilateral renal agenesis with oligohydramnios. Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) revealed severe compression of the left iliac vein by the right iliac artery without evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Conservative treatment with anticoagulant prophylaxis wa

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection is associated with high risk of venous thromboembolic events mainly pulmonary embolism or deep venous thrombosis of the lower limbs. Ovarian vein thrombosis is a rare and serious condition usually seen in the immediate postpartum period and other conditions including pelvic inflammatory diseases, gynecological malignancies, hypercoagulable states, and few cases to date have reported ovarian vein thrombosis as a complication of COVID-19 infection. Patient with ovarian vein thrombosis usually presents with fever and lower abdominal pain that can mimi

BACKGROUND: Superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) is considered a benign thrombotic condition in most patients. However, it also can cause serious complications, such as clot progression to deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Although most SVT patients are encountered in primary healthcare, studies on SVT nearly all were focused on patients seen in the hospital setting. This paper describes the protocol of the development and external validation of three prognostic prediction models for relevant clinical outcomes in SVT patients seen in primary care: (i) prolonged (painful)

Deep septic pelvic thrombophlebitis is a rare but potentially devastating complication in the puerperium. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment of this postpartum complication is essential. We report a case of a 23-year-old multipara, who presented with persistent high fever and abdominal pain two days after delivery. Diagnosis of deep septic pelvic thrombophlebitis was suspected and confirmed by using contrast-enhanced computerized tomography. Upon admission in the intensive care unit, she developed shortness of breath together with hypoxemia, which was attributed to septic pulmonary embol

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy is a known risk factor for spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma. During cesarean section or vaginal delivery, the unstable hemodynamic status that may occur owing to fluctuation of intra-abdominal pressure increases the possibility of spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma. During labor and the postpartum period, neurologic symptoms may be masked by labor pain or anesthesia block, which makes early diagnosis difficult, especially in the obstetric clinic without a neurologist or neurosurgeon.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 28-year-old woman who had a normal spontaneous delivery under
