Antibacterial and antioxidant potential analysis of Verbascum sinaiticum leaf extract and its synthesized silver nanoparticles.

The potential applications of plant extract and nanoparticles in antibacterial and antioxidant studies have garnered significant interest in recent times. Despite being utilized in Ethiopian traditional medicine, Verbascum sinaiticum (qetetina) constituents and its usage in nanoparticle synthesis remain relatively unexplored. This study explores the potential of the plant extract and its nanoparticles for antibacterial and antioxidant applications, with a focus on the leaf extracts and its silver nanoparticles. The leaf extract was analyzed using LC-MS and GC-MS and found to contain over 70 co

Toxigenic Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue and Ergot Alkaloids.

"Fescue toxicosis" and reproductive ergotism present identical toxidromes in late-gestational mares and, likely, other equids. Both toxic syndromes are caused by ergopeptine alkaloids (EPAs) of fungal origin, and they are collectively referred to as equine ergopeptine alkaloid toxicosis (EEPAT). EPAs are produced by either a toxigenic endophyte (Epichloë coenophiala) in tall fescue and/or a nonendophytic fungus (Claviceps purpurea), infecting small grains and grasses. EEPAT can cause hypoprolactinemia-induced agalactia/dysgalactia, prolonged gestation, dystocia, and other reproductive abnormal

Codonopsis lanceolata polysaccharide ameliorates high-fat diet induced-postpartum hypogalactia via stimulating prolactin receptor-mediated Jak2/Stat5 signaling.

This study aims to investigate the ameliorative effect of Codonopsis lanceolata polysaccharide (PCL) on mice with hypogalatia induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) and the potential underlying mechanism. We found that oral administration of PCL demonstrated significant benefits in countering the negative effects of HFD, including weight gain, hepatic steatosis, mesenteric adipocyte hypertrophy, and abnormal glucose/lipid metabolism. In addition, PCL improved mammary gland development and enhanced lactogenesis performance. Histologically, PCL ameliorated the retardation of ductal growth, reduced mam

In Vitro Interaction between Mycoplasma agalactiae and Small Ruminants' Endogenous Bacterial Strains of Enterococcus spp. and Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus.

Recently, an antimicrobial effect on Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma), the main etiological agent of contagious agalactia (CA), was reported in vitro with strains of Enterococcus spp. from ovine and caprine milk. The aim of this work was to evaluate the interaction of Ma with the same Enterococcus spp. isolated from other anatomical locations (vagina) and other bacterial populations present in milk, such as coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). The vaginal Enterococcus strains and the raw milk CNS were isolated from sheep and goats. Experimental in vitro conditions were prepared to assess the grow

Mycoplasma agalactiae Vaccines: Current Status, Hurdles, and Opportunities Due to Advances in Pathogenicity Studies.

Contagious agalactia (CA) is a serious multietiological disease whose classic etiological agent is Mycoplasma agalactiae and which causes high morbidity and mortality rates in infected herds. CA is classified as a notifiable disease by the World Organization for Animal Health due to its significant worldwide economic impact on livestock, primarily involving goat and sheep farms. The emergence of atypical symptoms and strains of M. agalactiae in wildlife ungulates reestablishes its highly plastic genome and is also of great epidemiological significance. Antimicrobial therapy is the main form of

Kidney Failure Secondary to Hereditary Xanthinuria due to a Homozygous Deletion of the XDH Gene in the Absence of Overt Kidney Stone Disease.

Hereditary xanthinuria (HXAN) is a rare metabolic disorder that results from mutations in either the xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) or the molybdenum cofactor sulfurase genes (MOCOS), respectively defining HXAN type I and type II. Hypouricemia, hypouricosuria, and abnormally high plasma and urine levels of xanthine, causing susceptibility to xanthine nephrolithiasis and deposition of xanthine crystals in tissues, are the metabolic hallmarks of HXAN. Several pathogenic variants in the XDH gene have so far been identified in patients with HXAN type I, but the clinical phenotype associated with the

The Development and Evaluation of a New Inactivated Vaccine against Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum.

Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capricolum (Mcc) and Mycoplasma capricolum subsp. capripneumoniae (Mccp) are pathogens that affect large and small ruminants. Indeed, Mcc affects both sheep and goats, causing contagious agalactia (CA). Mccp affects only goats, causing contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP). CA and CCPP are mainly controlled using inactivated Mcc and Mccp vaccines. However, producing the vaccine with the Mccp strain is complex, fastidious, and costly due to the slow growth of the bacterium. In this study, we present new oil-adjuvanted and inactivated Mcc and Mccp vaccines for sh

First Description of Mycoplasma agalactiae Anatomical Localization in Naturally Infected Hard Ticks (Rhipicephalus bursa).

Mycoplasma agalactiae (Ma) is considered the primary causative agent of contagious agalactia (CA) in sheep and goats, which causes severe losses to the small ruminant dairy industry. As early as 1816, it was thought that environmental factors played a role in pathogen maintenance in endemic areas. Specifically, recent studies hypothesized a vector role for arthropods in the epidemiology of disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence and anatomical localization of Ma in naturally infected Riphicephalus bursa ticks to better evaluate tick-pathogen interactions. Salivary glands

[Discussion on postpartum hypogalactia treated with Shaoze (SI 1) based on the theory of "milk-blood homology"].

Based on the theory of "milk-blood homology", the evidence of Shaoze (SI 1) in treatment of postpartum hypogalactia was explored and the clinical application introduced. In traditional Chinese medicine, small intestine meridian and the functions of small intestine are extensively involved in the procedure of milk formation, i.e. transformation, transportation and connection. Shaoze (SI 1) communicates the meridians of hand-taiyang and hand-shaoyin. It enhances the connection of the small intestine with the heart, spleen and stomach. It is the jing-well point for unblocking and moistening to pr

Effects of a blend extract of Sauropus androgynus, Moringa oleifera, and Coleus amboinicus on milk production in lactating rats.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is vital for infant health, providing essential nutrients and protection against infections. Despite the benefits, many postpartum women face challenges in breastfeeding due to hypogalactia caused by stress, anxiety, or maternal illness. While medications, such as metoclopramide and domperidone, are sometimes prescribed to increase milk supply, they are limited due to safety concerns. As a result, there is a growing interest in alternative nonpharmacological interventions, including herbal galactagogues. Plants, such as Sauropus androgynus, Moringa oleifera, and Coleu

Evaluation of circulating immune cells, analytes, and inflammatory markers in sows affected with postpartum dysgalactia syndrome.

Postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PDS) is a condition affecting periparturient sows, characterized by a reduction in milk and colostrum synthesis shortly after farrowing. Insufficient milk production results in substantial economic losses due to increased piglet morbidity/mortality and premature sow culling. Since PDS develops within a few days following farrowing, the study objectives were to determine if periparturient immune cell profiles and circulating biomarkers differ in sows affected by PDS. We hypothesized differences in immune cells, circulating analytes, and inflammatory markers woul
