From February 1983 to December 1985, the authors investigated 19 african women with Sheehan's syndrome in Niamey (Republic of Niger). A 15 points diagnostic score was systematically used. Two signs were indispensable for the diagnosis: post-partum agalactia (or severe hypogalactia) and amenorrhea. At least 9 points score was found for every case. Eighteen patients lived along a major road in Niamey and in Dosso departments. Early-lactation Holstein cows fed a corn silage-based diet low in chloride and supplemented with sodium bicarbonate were observed for clinical, metabolic, and production alterations over the course of 8 to 11 weeks. From January 1981 to May 1982 a prospective study was conducted investigating the breast-feeding patterns following the introduction of a partial rooming-in-system in 1978. A retrospective study was performed at the New York State college of veterinary medicine, ambulatory clinic to determine the prognosis for cows with peracute or acute coliform mastitis. Eighty-eight cows were identified by their clinical signs and positive culture of coliform organisms. The pattern of nursing following discharge from the hospital was investigated in 491 patients during 1980. A mean total duration of nursing of 20.02 weeks and a mean complete duration of nursing of 11.3 weeks was found. Early nursing following delivery does not have as significant an influence on the intensity of nursing as the proportion of nursing during the post-partum stay in hospital. In 1980 we asked 491 women in childbed about their breast-feeding behaviour in the hospital and later at home. For 11,3 weeks on an average a woman supported her baby by breast-feeding, the total breast-feeding-time on an average was 20,02 weeks. The immediate breast-feeding after the delivery seems not to have such an important influence as the general breast-feeding situation in the hospital, which is influenced by the rooming-in-system and the free-demand-feeding. The majority of 50 nonpregnant dairy goats in a herd showed acute symptoms of disease for 1–2 days after a sudden change in weather conditions, feeding regime and management. In 17 of the does the condition progressed with symptoms of septicaemia with depression, fever, inappetence and hypogalactia for a period of up to 5 weeks. Only 1 of these 17 animals died. Three weeks after the first symptoms were seen, 7 other animals showed typical symptoms of listeric encephalitis. All but 1 recovered within 2 weeks. Treatment with penicillin seemed to have good effect against both these disease forms.

Reference is made to the current tendency to reappraise breast feeding in the light of both medical and social-cultural considerations, and attention is called to the current lack of sound treatments for hypogalactia. The physiopathological mechanisms underlying this condition are examined, and an account is given of results obtained with acupuncture reflexotherapy in this field. The conclusion is drawn that the technique is effective, innocuous and well accepted.

Sixteen puerperal women between the ages of 17-30 years, were studied in a double blind trial during the four weeks postpartum. Eight women received orally 20 mg of synthetic TRH three times a day, 30 minutes before the corresponding breast feeding; the remaining group received a placebo in the same fashion.
