Hypothalamic and sex-related hormones in migraine.

The hypothalamus and sex hormones are closely linked to primary headache disorders. Migraine is the most prevalent disabling neurological disorder, affecting up to 15% of the global population, with enormous socioeconomic and personal impacts. It ranks second among years lived with disability (YLD), with women being the most affected, experiencing a threefold higher prevalence than men. Women report more severe migraine symptoms during periods of sex hormone fluctuations, particularly at puberty, during pregnancy, and around perimenopause. The reason for this sex-based difference remains uncle

Defining Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex: using Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder as a framework for proposing preliminary diagnostic criteria.

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) is a distinct neurobiological condition characterized by negative alterations in mental state in response to milk letdown during lactation. Symptoms vary by patient and can include feelings of sadness, anxiety or agitation. Importantly, the symptoms are brief, typically lasting no more than 5 minutes. Prevalence has been found between 6 and 27% of lactating women, but studies show heterogeneity, due in part to inconsistent definition. D-MER is not currently classified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International

Impact of maternal hypothyroidism on human milk macronutrient content and fatty acid composition: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hypothyroidism can alter the serum lipid profile and the composition of human milk (HM) proteins involved in macronutrient metabolism. We investigated the association between maternal hypothyroidism and HM macronutrient content and fatty acid (FA) composition. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study conducted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, HM samples from mothers with hypothyroidism (n = 19) and mothers without hypothyroidism (n = 30) were compared. Eligible participants were breastfeeding mothers of term singleton infants with no history of metabolic disorders or chronic disease. Mat

Intergenerational neurotoxicity mediated by maternal plasma metabolite profile remodeling following maternal atrazine exposure.

As a widely used triazine herbicide, atrazine (ATR) has been demonstrated to exert neurotoxicity and induce metabolic disorders in organisms. Our previous studies have further revealed that maternal exposure to ATR during pregnancy and lactation can damage dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain of offspring. Current mechanistic investigations into the intergenerational neurotoxic effects of ATR and other environmental factors have mostly focused on regulatory mechanisms at the genetic material level, which present significant limitations. However, there is a lack of relevant experimental evidenc

Prebiotics partially protect offspring from maternal antibiotic-induced obesity risk by altering maternal milk microbiota and gut colonization in Sprague-Dawley rats.

Maternal antibiotic use can increase obesity risk in offspring. Co-administering prebiotics mitigates the risk in rats. How prebiotics and antibiotics interact to affect obesity risk is unknown, but could involve altered milk microbiota that influences offspring gut colonization. Sprague-Dawley rat dams were exposed to antibiotics (low-dose penicillin) and/or prebiotics (oligofructose) during gestation and lactation. Gut and milk microbiota were measured using 16S rRNA sequencing, and metabolic measurements were taken for dams and offspring at weaning (day 21) and 10 days postweaning (day 31).

Health benefits of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 in infants and children: a mini-review.

The colonization of the infant gut microbiome during the critical window of 0-3 years is influenced by a multitude of prenatal, environmental and host factors, and may be crucial for life-long health. The infant gut microbiome is highly dynamic, with bifidobacteria-dominance generally established during birth and lactation, followed by transition to a more stable and adult-like composition reached around 3 years of age. Bifidobacteria-dominance in infancy is considered protective as they not only display both anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects but also foster the establishment of o

Maternal Thyroid Disorders and Their Effects on the Metabolic Profile of Breast Milk: A Systematic Review.

Human breast milk composition is inextricably linked to maternal physiology, yet the impact of thyroid dysfunction on this biological matrix remains undercharacterized. Given that lactation serves as the primary metabolic conduit for the neonate, alterations in the milk metabolic profile could have profound developmental consequences. This study investigates metabolomic and proteomic differentiations in breast milk associated with maternal thyroid abnormalities to evaluate their potential implications for infant growth and neurodevelopment. A systematic search was conducted across PubMed, Emba

Electrotherapy in Lactation Care.

Electrotherapy in Lactation CareBreastfeeding offers significant health benefits but is often discontinued early due to inflammatory conditions of the lactating breast and nipple trauma. Common issues such as mastitis, engorgement, and nipple damage contribute to pain, infection, and reduced milk production, leading to early cessation. Effective management includes optimal positioning, strategies to maintain breastfeeding, and wound care. Emerging electrotherapies, such as Photobiomodulation Therapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound, may offer promising, non-invasive treatments to support lactation.

Milk yield dynamics as indicators for disease in dairy cows.

Dairy cows experience the majority of diseases during early lactation, and diseases are linked to milk losses. Fluctuations in milk yield were previously suggested to add value in the health monitoring of dairy cows. The aim of this study was to investigate the relations between health status during the first 56 DIM and 2 types of milk yield dynamics: (1) lactation curve characteristics and (2) dynamic indicators of milk yield derived from deviations from the lactation curve. Data on the daily milk yield and disease treatments of 4 previous experiments were merged and examined. Cows were categ

Redefining genitourinary syndrome: A proposal to expand the GSM nomenclature to encompass the full spectrum of hypoestrogenic and hypoandrogenic urogenital disorders.

The current term "Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause" (GSM) was introduced to replace "vulvovaginal atrophy" and to better describe a constellation of symptoms affecting the genital and lower urinary tracts due to hypoestrogenism. However, its association with menopause excludes a growing and diverse population of individuals who experience identical symptoms due to non-menopausal etiologies, including perimenopause, lactation, hormonal contraception, cancer therapies, gender-affirming hormone therapy, and other medications. This paper proposes an expanded and updated nomenclature-Genitourina

SSRI-Induced Galactorrhea in Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are generally regarded as safe and widely used in children and adolescents. Although rare, SSRIs can cause neuroendocrine side effects such as hyperprolactinemia and galactorrhea. Galactorrhea is inappropriate milk secretion outside of pregnancy or breastfeeding and may occur with normal prolactin levels. Although numerous cases have been reported in adults, only a few have been reported in adolescents. METHODS: A PubMed and Embase search was conducted to identify English-language case reports and case series involving patients ≤18 y

Association of gestational diabetes with other lactation-related disorders: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization analysis of causal effects.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse metabolic outcomes and may also be related to postpartum breast and lactation disorders. Observational studies are susceptible to confounding and reverse causation. We used a 2-sample Mendelian randomization design to examine the association between genetic liability to GDM and other disorders of the breast and lactation associated with childbirth. Genetic liability to GDM was associated with higher odds of a composite phenotype of breast and lactation disorders associated with childbirth. Replication using independent samples and

Balancing High Yield and Metabolic Health in Dairy Ruminants: The Central Hub Role of the Rumen Microbiota.

Modern dairy production has greatly increased milk yield, but high productivity is often accompanied by greater metabolic pressure, particularly during the transition period. Ketosis, fatty liver, and subacute ruminal acidosis are major disorders that limit health, efficiency, and sustainability in high-yielding dairy ruminants. This review examines the rumen microbiota as a central biological interface linking diet, ruminal fermentation, epithelial function, hepatic metabolism, and inflammation. Under homeostatic conditions, the rumen microbiota supports lactation by converting dietary fibre,
