Transcriptome Analyses Reveal Essential Roles of Alternative Splicing Regulation in Heat-Stressed Holstein Cows.

Heat stress (HS) severely impacts the productivity and welfare of dairy cows. Investigating the biological mechanisms underlying HS response is crucial for developing effective mitigation and breeding strategies. Therefore, we evaluated the changes in milk yield, physiological indicators, blood biochemical parameters, and alternative splicing (AS) patterns of lactating Holstein cows during thermoneutral (TN, N = 19) and heat-stress (HS, N = 17) conditions. There was a significant (p < 0.05) decline in milk yield as physiological indicators increased after exposure to natural HS conditions. The

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in a Military Hospital Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are risk factors for maternal and fetal complications with long-term sequelae for mother and children. HDP are not clearly understood; however, there appears to be a relationship with maternal weight gain. The effects of maternal weight gain and pregnancy outcomes, including HDP, are understudied. Few studies have assessed maternal weight gain in service-connected women and its effects on HDP. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between blood pressure and birth outcomes in women who delivered their infants at a military hospital.

Rabbit Maternal Behavior: A Perspective from Behavioral Neuroendocrinology, Animal Production, and Psychobiology.

Rabbit maternal behavior (MB) impacts meat and fur production on the farm, survival of the species in the wild, and pet welfare. Specific characteristics of rabbit MB (i.e., three-step nest building process; single, brief, daily nursing bout) have been used as models for exploring particular themes in neuroscience, like obsessive-compulsive actions, circadian rhythms, and cognition. Particular hormonal combinations regulate nest building by acting on brain regions controlling MB in other mammals. Nonhormonal factors like type of lodging and the doe's social rank influence nursing and milk prod

Changes in the pattern of heat waves and the impacts on Holstein cows in a subtropical region.

This study aimed to evaluate the change in the air temperature and the impacts of heat waves using Climate Change Indexes on the physiological and productive responses of lactating Holstein cows. Daily data of maximum and minimum air temperature for 1981-2021 were used. Heat waves were determined using six Climate Change Indexes. Individual data on respiratory rate, rectal temperature, and milk yield were collected in the summers of 2018, 2019, and 2021. The temperature trend analysis showed a significant (p < 0.0001) increase in maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and days in a heat wav

Reproductive performance and milk yield of rabbits fed diets supplemented with garden cress (Lepidium sativum) seed.

Recently, phytochemicals in plants have evoked interest as sources of naturally beneficial substances and as alternatives to antimicrobials. Based on these benefits, it was hypothesized that garden cress (GC; Lepidium sativum) supplementation could overcome the negative impacts of severe heat stress on the reproductive and lactation performance, physiological parameters, and antioxidant status of rabbits. Twenty-four mature V-line does (6 months old) with an average body weight of 3.65 ± 0.54 kg were randomly assigned into four homogenously equal groups (n = 6) according to the level of supple

Management of Common Complications of Lactation: The Breast Surgeon's Role in Examining the Science and Debunking Old Myths.

Breast surgeons are well poised to promote evidence-based recommendations for lactation-related breast disorders and clarify existing misconceptions in traditional care. Surgeons can resolve lactational fluid collections and avoid milk fistula development during drainage and/or other procedures on the breast. Using principles of surgical wound management, they can provide effective care of nipple trauma. They can distinguish between inflammatory and infectious mastitis and promote delicate tissue handling to prevent breast injury and phlegmon. Finally, breast surgeons can debunk the myth of fu

Maternal inappropriate calcium intake aggravates dietary-induced obesity in male offspring by affecting the differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells.

BACKGROUND: The effects of inappropriate dietary calcium intake in early life on later obesity have not been fully elucidated. AIM: To raise the mechanism of maternal calcium intake on the multi-differentiation potential of mesenchymal stem cells among their male offspring. METHODS: Four-week-old female C57BL/6N mice were fed by deficient, low, normal and excessive calcium reproductive diets throughout pregnancy and lactation. Bone MSCs (BMSCs) were obtained from 7-day-old male offspring to measure the adipogenic differentiation potential by the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. The other wea

Incidence and Treatments of Bovine Mastitis and Other Diseases on 37 Dairy Farms in Wisconsin.

The aim of this research was to describe the incidence and treatments of mastitis and other common bovine diseases using one year of retrospective observational data (n = 50,329 cow-lactations) obtained from herd management software of 37 large dairy farms in Wisconsin. Incidence rate (IR) was defined as the number of first cases of each disease divided by the number of lactations per farm. Clinical mastitis (CM) remains the most diagnosed disease of dairy cows. Across all herds, the mean IR (cases per 100 cow-lactations) was 24.4 for clinical mastitis, 14.5 for foot disorders (FD), 11.2 for m

Genetics, epigenetics and transgenerational transmission of obesity in children.

Sedentary lifestyle and consumption of high-calorie foods have caused a relentless increase of overweight and obesity prevalence at all ages. Its presently epidemic proportion is disquieting due to the tight relationship of obesity with metabolic syndrome and several other comorbidities which do call for urgent workarounds. The usual ineffectiveness of present therapies and failure of prevention campaigns triggered overtime a number of research studies which have unveiled some relevant aspects of obesity genetic and epigenetic inheritable profiles. These findings are revealing extremely precio

Rumen-protected glucose supplementation alters fecal microbiota and its metabolic profiles in early lactation dairy cows.

INTRODUCTION: Negative energy balance (NEB) is the pathological basis of metabolic disorders in early lactation dairy cows. Rumen-protected glucose (RPG) is a feed additive to relieve NEB of cows in early lactation. The aims of the current study were to evaluate the impact of different doses of RPG supply on fecal microbiota and metabolome in early lactation dairy cows, and their correlation with each other. METHODS: A total of 24 multiparous Holstein dairy cows in early lactation were randomly assigned to one of four treatments for the first 35 days of the early lactation period, as follows:

Effects of dietary antioxidant supplementation on metabolism and inflammatory biomarkers in heat-stressed dairy cows.

Heat-stress-induced inflammation may be ameliorated by antioxidant supplementation due to the purported effects of increased production of reactive oxygen species or oxidative stress on the gastrointestinal tract barrier. Thus, study objectives were to evaluate whether antioxidant supplementation [AGRADO Plus 2.0 (AP); EW Nutrition] affects metabolism and inflammatory biomarkers in heat-stressed lactating dairy cows. Thirty-two mid-lactation multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary-environmental treatments: (1) thermoneutral (TN) conditions and fed a control diet (TN-CON; n =

Phenotypic analysis of heat stress in Holsteins using test-day production records and NASA POWER meteorological data.

Weather station data and test-day production records can be combined to quantify the effects of heat stress on production traits in dairy cattle. However, meteorological data sets that are retrieved from ground-based weather stations can be limited by spatial and temporal data gaps. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (NASA POWER) database provides meteorological data over regions where surface measurements are sparse or nonexistent. The first aim of this study was to determine whether NASA POWER data are a viable alternative resource of w

Genotype by environment interaction due to heat stress in Brown Swiss cattle.

Due to its geographical position and a highly variable orography, Italy is characterized by several climatic areas and thus, by many different dairy cow farming systems. Brown Swiss cattle, in this context, are a very appreciated genetic resource for their adaptability and low metabolic requirement. The significant heterogeneity in farming systems may consist of genotype by environment (G × E) interactions with neglected changes in animals' rank position. The objective of this study was to investigate G × E for heat tolerance in Brown Swiss cattle for several production traits (milk, fat, and

Associations of parity with health disorders and blood metabolite concentrations in Holstein cows in different production systems.

Data were obtained from studies in Australia, Canada, and the United States using individual cow data from 28,230 Holstein cows to evaluate associations between parity and disease. Our goal was to develop understanding of disease risks for cows of differing parity. We hypothesized that there would be increased risks of disease and changes in metabolite concentrations with increased parity. Parity ≥5 represented 2,533 cows or 9.0%, parity 4 was 9.8% (2,778), parity 3 as 19.0% (5,355), parity 2 as 28.1% (7,925), and parity 1 was 34.1% (9,639) of the sample. Of these cows, 15.5% were in Australia

Symposium review: Environmental effects on mammary immunity and health.

Environmental effects on pathogen abundance and access are precursors to mastitis. Indeed, high heat and humidity, and unsanitary housing and equipment, are associated with greater pathogen load and exposure. Although less is known about effects of environment on a cow's ability to resist infection, several indicators suggest that it can affect pathogen responses. Mastitis incidence and bulk tank somatic cell count vary with season, typically peaking in summer. Recent controlled studies have revealed that heat stress exposure results in changes in the microbiome of the cow and her environment,

Catatonia during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

While the psychopathology of mental disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period is a growing area of research, the prevalence and significance of catatonic symptoms has been relatively neglected. To address this gap in knowledge, a systematic review of articles on catatonia occurring during pregnancy and the postpartum period was conducted. PubMed, Excerpta Medica, (later EMBASE) databases were queried for articles published in English from their inception in 1966 and 1946, respectively to May 31. 2022 using the terms "catatonia", AND "perinatal", "puerperal", "postpartum", "antepartu

An update on thyroid disorders in the postpartum period.

PURPOSE: To review the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of postpartum thyroid dysfunction, and related management of thyroid disorders during lactation. METHODS: We reviewed the literature on postpartum thyroid dysfunction and management of thyroid disorders during lactation. RESULTS: The postpartum period is characterized by a rebound from the immunotolerance induced by pregnancy. Routine thyroid function screening is not recommended for asymptomatic women in the postpartum period. Testing thyroid function should be considered at 6-12-week postpartum for high-risk populations, incl

Galactorrhea After Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy: Case Report, Review of the Literature, and Algorithmic Approach to Management.

Nipple discharge is a rare but possible occurrence after nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM). This study presents the first case of galactorrhea in a female patient after NSM. Although milky discharge due to physiologic lactation related to pregnancy is more common, galactorrhea is still possible and should be worked up appropriately to ensure that all breast tissue has been removed and that there are no other more worrisome causes.

Omeprazole-induced galactorrhea in kidney transplant patients-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Omeprazole belongs to the pharmacological classifications of proton pump inhibitors and is a widely used medicine. All proton pump inhibitors have a common mechanism of action and are prodrugs that require activation in an acidic environment. Omeprazole is extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome 2C19 and cytochrome 3A4, which are responsible for drug interactions. Omeprazole-induced galactorrhea is a rare adverse event of drug metabolism and is often underreported. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 26-year-old unmarried Asian (Bhutanese) female who underwent kidney
