Citalopram-induced sleep bruxism in a breastfed infant: A case report.

Bruxism associated with antidepressant use is an under-recognized phenomenon. The use of citalopram has gained wide acceptance in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders; however, the consumption of this medication during lactation and pregnancy has not been carefully characterized. There are limited studies about its side effects in the breastfeeding period. Here, we report a rare case of citalopram-induced sleep bruxism in a 9-month-old female breastfed infant whose mother used SSRI agent citaloporm for her anxiety disorder. Within 2 weeks of initiating her citalopram treatment, wi

The Involvement of Prolactin in Stress-Related Disorders.

The most important and widely studied role of prolactin (PRL) is its modulation of stress responses during pregnancy and lactation. PRL acts as a neuropeptide to support physiological reproductive responses. The effects of PRL on the nervous system contribute to a wide range of changes in the female brain during pregnancy and the inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. All these changes contribute to the behavioral and physiological adaptations of a young mother to enable reproductive success. PRL-driven brain adaptations are also crucial for regulating maternal emotionality and well-be

Necropsy-based study on dairy cow mortality-Underlying causes of death.

The worldwide problem of increasing dairy cow mortality is widespread in modern production systems, it causes economic losses, and indicates problems with herd health and welfare. Most studies on causes of dairy cow mortality are limited as they are based on secondary register data, or questionnaires for producers or veterinarians, and neither necropsies nor histopathologic analyses are usually performed. For this reason, no definite causes for dairy cow deaths have been determined making it difficult or impossible to implement effective preventive measures. The objectives of this study were t

Serum metabolomics assessment of etiological processes predisposing ketosis in water buffalo during early lactation.

Metabolic disorders as ketosis are manifestations of the animal's inability to manage the increase in energy requirement during early lactation. Generally, buffaloes show a different response to higher metabolic demands than other ruminants with a lower incidence of metabolic problems, although ketosis is one of the major diseases that may decrease the productivity in buffaloes. The aim of this study was to characterize the metabolic profile of Mediterranean buffaloes (MB) associated with 2 different levels of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Sixty-two MB within 50 days in milk (DIM) were enrolled and

Integrating on-farm and genomic information improves the predictive ability of milk infrared prediction of blood indicators of metabolic disorders in dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: Blood metabolic profiles can be used to assess metabolic disorders and to evaluate the health status of dairy cows. Given that these analyses are time-consuming, expensive, and stressful for the cows, there has been increased interest in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of milk samples as a rapid, cost-effective alternative for predicting metabolic disturbances. The integration of FTIR data with other layers of information such as genomic and on-farm data (days in milk (DIM) and parity) has been proposed to further enhance the predictive ability of statistical methods

[Relationship between metabolic profiles in herd health and 4 scoring systems used in dairy herd health programs: Statistical analysis with an additive Bayesian network].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to describe the relationship between the biochemical variables used in metabolic profiles and various scores commonly used in herd health management of dairy cows. The Bayesian network was used to determine the relationship between metabolic blood profiles and the scores for body condition (BC), rumen fill (RF), faecal consistency (FC) and undigested fraction (UF) on a herd basis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In each of 10 dairy herds, blood was collected from a minimum of ten lactating cows for biochemical analysis and generation of metabolic profiles. T

Evaluation of milk yield and composition, feed intake, chewing activities, and clinical variables in dairy cows under hot-humid climate of tropical zone.

Dairy cows increase heat loads when the temperature-humidity index (THI) value is elevated in the ambient environments. This condition often occurs in the tropical areas due to a higher THI rate throughout seasons. The major objective of the study was to investigate the different responses in milk yield and composition, chewing activities, and health parameters in dairy cows under the dry and wet seasons of tropical climate zone in Indonesia. Twenty mid-lactating Indonesian Holstein-Friesian cows (139.3 ± 24.63 DIM; 10 primiparous and 10 multiparous; 441 ± 21.5 kg BW) were randomly subjected t

Supplementation of n-3 PUFAs in Adulthood Attenuated Susceptibility to Pentylenetetrazol Induced Epilepsy in Mice Fed with n-3 PUFAs Deficient Diet in Early Life.

The growth and development of the fetus and newborn throughout pregnancy and lactation are directly related to the nutritional status of the mother, which has a significant impact on the health of the offspring. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the susceptibility of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid deficiency in early life to seizures in adulthood. The n-3 PUFAs-deficient mice's offspring were established and then fed with α-LNA diet, DHA-enriched ethyl ester, and DHA-enriched phospholipid-containing diets for 17 days at the age of eight weeks. During this period, animals receiv

Progress in epigenetic regulation of milk synthesis, with particular emphasis on mRNA regulation and DNA methylation.

Inadequate milk secretion and a lack of nutrients in humans and mammals are serious problems. It is of great significance to clarify the mechanisms of milk synthesis and treatment methods. Epigenetic modification, represented by RNA methylation, is an important way of gene expression regulation that profoundly affects human gene expression and participates in various physiological and pathological mechanisms. Epigenetic disorders also have an important impact on the production and secretion of milk. This review systematically summarized the research results of epigenetics in the process of lac

Peripartum cardiomyopathy: A review.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy is a rare type of heart failure manifesting towards the end of pregnancy or in the months following delivery, in the absence of any other cause of heart failure. There is a wide range of incidence across countries reflecting different population demographics, uncertainty over definitions and under-reporting. Race, ethnicity, multiparity and advanced maternal age are considered important risk factors for the disease. Its etiopathogenesis is incompletely understood and is likely multifactorial, including hemodynamic stresses of pregnancy, vasculo-hormonal factors, infla

Behavioral and physiological responses to an inspired-air supplemental cooling system for dairy cows in free-stall housing.

During heat stress, dairy cows spend less time lying down to dissipate heat. Heat stress abatement strategies generally target cows outside of their resting areas. However, cooling cows while in their stalls could help alleviate heat stress without compromising lying behavior. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of an inspired-air supplemental cooling system (SCS) on respiration rate, rectal temperatures, lying behavior, rumination time, and milk production (energy-corrected milk, ECM) of lactating dairy cows. A free-stall pen was retrofitted with custom stall partitions to d

Thermal performance of a low-profile cross-ventilated freestall dairy barn with evaporative cooling pads in a hot and humid climate.

A commercial low-profile cross-ventilated system (LPCV) free-stall barn with evaporative cooling pads on the air intake side was used to assess the potential of cross-ventilation with evaporative cooling to alleviate heat stress in lactating dairy cows. A total of 5712 records (238 days × 24 h) of air temperature (AT) and relative humidity (RH) values were collected. In order to state the effectiveness of the ventilation system and potential heat stress, the temperature humidity index (THI) and enthalpy (h) were calculated outside and inside the LPCV barn. The cooling capacity of the LPCV syst

Behavioral patterns as indicators of resilience after parturition in dairy cows.

During the transition phase, dairy cows are susceptible to develop postpartum diseases. Cows that stay healthy or recover rapidly can be considered to be more resilient in comparison to those that develop postpartum diseases. An indication of loss of resilience will allow for early intervention with preventive and supportive measures before the onset of disease. We investigated which quantitative behavioral characteristics during the dry period could be used as indicators of reduced resilience after calving, using noninvasive Smart Tag neck and Smart Tag leg sensors in dairy cows (Nedap N.V.).

Prescription of oxycodone versus codeine after childbirth and risk of persistent opioid use: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Oxycodone is increasingly prescribed for postpartum analgesia in lieu of codeine owing to concerns regarding the neonatal safety of codeine during lactation. We examined whether initiation of oxycodone after delivery was associated with an increased risk of persistent opioid use relative to initiation of codeine. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of people who filled a prescription for either codeine or oxycodone within 7 days of discharge from hospital after delivery between Sept. 1, 2012, and June 30, 2020. The primary outcome was persistent opioid use, defin

Review: Reproductive consequences of whole-body adaptations of dairy cattle to heat stress.

Heat stress has far-reaching ramifications for agricultural production and the severity of its impact has increased alongside the growing threats of global warming. Climate change is exacerbating the already-severe consequences of seasonal heat stress and is predicted to cause additional losses in reproductive performance, milk production and overall productivity. Estimated and predicted losses are staggering, and without advancement in production practices during heat stress, these projected losses will threaten the human food supply. This is particularly concerning as the worldwide populatio

Geographical trends for automatic milking systems research in non-pasture-based dairy farms: A scoping review.

Automatic milking system (AMS) adoption in the United States is trending upward, with issues such as lower availability and increased cost of labor being factors frequently listed as motives for AMS implementation. In addition, more interest in precision dairy farming by the new generation of farmers may also help increase AMS adoption. The objective of this scoping review was to characterize the nature of the literature investigating non-pasture-based AMS and the opportunities and challenges for future research. The eligibility criteria included studies published in or after the year 2000, wi

Effects of targeted clinical examination based on alerts from automated health monitoring systems on herd health and performance of lactating dairy cows.

Our objectives were to compare the proportion of lactating dairy cows diagnosed with health disorders (HD) and herd performance when using a health monitoring program designed to rely primarily but not exclusively on alerts from automated health monitoring (AHM) systems or a health monitoring program based primarily on systematic clinical examinations, milk yield monitoring, and visual observation of cows. In a clinical trial, at ∼30 d before expected parturition, nulliparous and parous Holstein cows, stratified by parity and days in gestation, were randomly assigned to the high-intensity clin

Management of epilepsy during pregnancy and lactation.

Epilepsy is a group of neurological diseases characterized by susceptibility to recurrent seizures. Antiseizure medications (ASMs) are the mainstay of treatment, but many antiseizure medications with variable safety profiles have been approved for use. For women with epilepsy in their childbearing years, the safety profile is important for them and their unborn children, because treatment is often required to protect them from seizures during pregnancy and lactation. Since no large randomized controlled trials have investigated safety in this subgroup of people with epilepsy, pregnancy registr

Breast Imaging and Intervention during Pregnancy and Lactation.

Physiologic changes that occur in the breast during pregnancy and lactation create challenges for breast cancer screening and diagnosis. Despite these challenges, imaging evaluation should not be deferred, because delayed diagnosis of pregnancy-associated breast cancer contributes to poor outcomes. Both screening and diagnostic imaging can be safely performed using protocols based on age, breast cancer risk, and whether the patient is pregnant or lactating. US is the preferred initial imaging modality for the evaluation of clinical symptoms in pregnant women, followed by mammography if the US
