Bioclimatic zoning for dairy cows in Brazil by statistical modeling.

BACKGROUND: Climate conditions affect animal welfare directly, influencing milk production. The Midwest region is the largest cattle-producing region in Brazil. The objective of this study was to elaborate on bioclimatic zoning for dairy cattle in the Midwest region of Brazil. Air temperature (Ta, °C) and relative humidity (%, RH) data from a 30-year historical series (1989-2019) collected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (NASA/POWER) platform were used. The Temperature and Humidity Index (THI) was determined for the hottest and cold

Non-additive QTL mapping of lactation traits in 124,000 cattle reveals novel recessive loci.

BACKGROUND: Deleterious recessive conditions have been primarily studied in the context of Mendelian diseases. Recently, several deleterious recessive mutations with large effects were discovered via non-additive genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of quantitative growth and developmental traits in cattle, which showed that quantitative traits can be used as proxies of genetic disorders when such traits are indicative of whole-animal health status. We reasoned that lactation traits in cattle might also reflect genetic disorders, given the increased energy demands of lactation and the substa

Late-gestation ear-surface temperatures and subsequent postpartum health, activity, milk yield, and reproductive performance of dairy cows.

A retrospective study was conducted to determine if postpartum health, milk yield, and reproductive traits in addition to peripartum daily physical activities (resting, eating, active time, and rumination) differ in dairy cows having greater or lesser ear-surface temperatures during late gestation (Days 230-239) compared with contemporary herd mates within season. Herd records collected from Holstein heifers (n = 348) and dry cows (n = 503; second through seventh lactations) were fitted with SensOor ear tags to collect hourly ear-surface temperatures. Mean temperatures were calculated from 240

Differences in the serum metabolome profile of dairy cows according to the BHB concentration revealed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR).

The mobilization of body reserves during the transition from pregnancy to lactation might predispose dairy cows to develop metabolic disorders such as subclinical ketosis or hyperketonemia. These conditions are not easily identifiable and are frequently related to other diseases that cause economic loss. The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum metabolome differences according to the β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration. Forty-nine Holstein Friesian dairy cows were enrolled between 15 and 30 days in milk. According to their serum BHB concentration, the animals were divided into three g

Symposium review: Adipose tissue endocrinology in the periparturient period of dairy cows.

The involvement of adipose tissue (AT) in metabolism is not limited to energy storage but turned out to be much more complex. We now know that in addition to lipid metabolism, AT is important in glucose homeostasis and AA metabolism and also has a role in inflammatory processes. With the discovery of leptin in 1994, the concept of AT being able to secrete messenger molecules collectively termed as adipokines, and acting in an endo-, para-, and autocrine manner emerged. Moreover, based on its asset of receptors, many stimuli from other tissues reaching AT via the bloodstream can also elicit dis

Invited review: Lethal heat stress: The putative pathophysiology of a deadly disorder in dairy cattle.

Heat stress (HS) reduces production and efficiency in almost every metric of the dairy operation, and it thus compromises profitability and sustainability. If the magnitude of HS progresses, it can become lethal. Death can occur acutely or days following the heat load, even if environmental conditions have become nonstressful. Consequently, lethal heat stress (LHS) is often difficult to identify and almost always misdiagnosed. The precise mechanisms of death when dairy cows succumb to LHS has not been fully elucidated or documented, but the pathophysiology of LHS appears to be conserved among

Blood brain barrier as an interface for alcohol induced neurotoxicity during development.

Ethanol consumption during pregnancy or lactation permanently impairs the development of the central nervous system (CNS), resulting in the spectrum of fetal alcohol disorders (FASD). FASD is a general term that covers a set of deficits in the embryo caused by gestational alcohol exposure, with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) considered the most serious. The clinical features of FAS include facial abnormalities, short stature, low body weight, and evidence of structural and/or functional damage to the central nervous system (CNS). The prevalence of FAS carriers worldwide is about 15 for every 10,

Chronic Perigestational Exposure to Chlorpyrifos Induces Perturbations in Gut Bacteria and Glucose and Lipid Markers in Female Rats and Their Offspring.

An increasing burden of evidence is pointing toward pesticides as risk factors for chronic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, leading to metabolic syndrome. Our objective was to assess the impact of chlorpyrifos (CPF) on metabolic and bacteriologic markers. Female rats were exposed before and during gestation and during lactation to CPF (1 mg/kg/day). Outcomes such as weight, glucose and lipid profiles, as well as disturbances in selected gut bacterial levels, were measured in both the dams (at the end of the lactation period) and in their female offspring at early adulthood (60 da

Development of Early-Life Gastrointestinal Microbiota in the Presence of Antibiotics Alters the Severity of Acute DSS-Induced Colitis in Mice.

Early-life gastrointestinal microbiota development is crucial for physiological development and immunological homeostasis. In the current study, perinatal microbiota and the development of gastrointestinal microbiota in different early-life periods (perinatal, lactation, and postweaning nutrition periods) were explored by using an antibiotic-interfered mouse model and a dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mouse model. Gut microbiota samples were collected from mother mice and litters. The results of 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that microbiota in the gastrointestinal system were presen

Increased supply of methionine during a heat-stress challenge in lactating holstein cows alters mammary tissue mTOR signaling and its response to lipopolysaccharide.

The first objective was to investigate the effects of feeding rumen-protected methionine (RPM) during a heat stress (HS) challenge on abundance and phosphorylation of mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR)-related signaling proteins in mammary gland. The second objective was to investigate how HS and RPM may modulate the response of mammary gland explants to an inflammatory challenge using lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Thirty-two multiparous, lactating Holstein cows (184 ± 59 DIM) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 environmental treatment groups, and 1 of 2 dietary treatments [TMR with RPM (Smartami

Effects of Early Weaning Associated with Alimentary Stress on Emotional and Feeding Behavior of Female Adult Wistar Rats.

Maternal lactation proves crucial for mammals' nutrition during their early development, influencing the development of adult physiological mechanisms. Its premature termination has been associated with several disorders, but these have been primarily documented in males, when they are most prevalent in women. Therefore, we subjected adult female Wistar rats to Early Weaning through maternal separation at age 15 days to acute alimentary stress in the form of visual and olfactory exposition to a cafeteria diet sans consumption for 22 days. We measured standard diet intake and water intake daily

"You still have that fear": Policy constraints on informed decision making about legalized cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is the most commonly used drug during pregnancy, excluding alcohol and tobacco, in the United States. Cannabis consumption during pregnancy is increasing along with greater legal and social acceptance. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative content analysis of 23 in-depth interviews with pregnant and lactating people in Massachusetts, a state that legalized cannabis for adult use in 2016. Our aim was to explore how policy constrains or facilitates people's ability to make informed decisions about cannabis use during pregnancy and lactation. Our analysis was conducted using a

Heat stress in a temperate climate leads to adapted sensor-based behavioral patterns of dairy cows.

Most research on heat stress has focused on (sub)tropical climates. The effects of higher ambient temperatures on the daily behavior of dairy cows in a maritime and temperate climate are less studied. With this retrospective observational study, we address that gap by associating the daily time budgets of dairy cows in the Netherlands with daily temperature and temperature-humidity index (THI) variables. During a period of 4 years, cows on 8 commercial dairy farms in the Netherlands were equipped with neck and leg sensors to collect data from 4,345 cow lactations regarding their daily time bud

Alternative Practices in Organic Dairy Production and Effects on Animal Behavior, Health, and Welfare.

The number of organic dairy farms has increased because of the increased growth of the organic market, higher organic milk price, and because some consumers prefer to purchase products from less intensive production systems. Best management practices are expected from organic dairy farms to ensure animal health and milk production. Organic dairy producers typically transition from conventional systems to avoid chemicals and pesticides, enhance economic viability, improve the environment, and increase soil fertility. Organic dairy producers respect and promote a natural environment for their an

Intrauterine and Postnatal Exposure to High Levels of Fluoride Is Associated with Motor Impairments, Oxidative Stress, and Morphological Damage in the Cerebellum of Offspring Rats.

Fluoride (F) is abundantly present on Earth and plays a beneficial role in human health. However, exposure to high doses of F can be a risk, mainly in endemic fluorosis regions. In light of this, we investigated the effects of F exposure during the intrauterine and postnatal periods of rats, in doses similar to those recommended in drinking water and the levels of F in regions with endemic fluorosis, on the offspring rats' cerebellum. Pregnant rats were divided into three groups: control (received ultrapure water only), 10 mg F/L, and 50 mg F/L for a period of 42 days (21 days gestation and 21

Genomic analyses of claw disorders in Holstein cows: Genetic parameters, trait associations, and genome-wide associations considering interactions of SNP and heat stress.

The aim of the present study was an in-depth genomic analysis to understand the genomic mechanisms of the 3 claw disorders dermatitis digitalis (DD), interdigital hyperplasia (HYP), and sole ulcer (SU). In this regard, we estimated genetic parameters based on genomic relationship matrices, performed genome-wide association studies, annotated potential candidate genes, and inferred genetic associations with breeding goal traits considering the most important chromosomal segments. As a further novelty of this study, we inferred possible SNP × heat stress interactions for claw disorders. The stud
