Risk factors for childbirth-related post-traumatic stress symptoms in mothers and coparents: A prospective longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (CB-PTSS), consisting of birth-related symptoms (BRS) and general symptoms (GS), can affect up to 13% of mothers and 1.3% of coparents (i.e., non-birthing parents). Previous studies on mothers have identified prenatal, childbirth-related, and postpartum risk factors for the development of CB-PTSS, but more evidence for coparents is needed. The present study aims to investigate a model of prenatal, childbirth-related, and postpartum risk factors for CB-PTSS in mothers and coparents. METHOD: 350 mothers and 211 coparents participated

Maternal Deaths Following Severe Maternal Morbidity During Childbirth in Canada.

Severe maternal morbidity (SMM) includes potentially life-threatening illnesses during pregnancy, childbirth, or the postpartum period. Our objective was to describe SMM case fatality rates in Canada from 2015/16 to 2021/22, including SMM-specific mortality rates and provincial/territorial variations. We studied all hospital deliveries in Canada (excluding Québec) with data obtained from the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Among 1 917 857 women with a hospital childbirth, 35 432 experienced SMM (18.5 per 1000 deliveries) and of these, 75 died before hospital discharge (2.12 deaths p

Using national virtual maternal death reviews to improve the quality of care during Pregnancy, labour and birth, and Postpartum in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania has implemented the Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR) system for more than a decade. However, multiple assessments have shown that the quality of maternal death reviews at facility and district levels has often been limited by inadequate specialist participation, weak root-cause analysis, and insufficient follow-through on action plans. These limitations have reduced the effectiveness of MPDSR in driving quality improvement and preventing avoidable maternal deaths. To address these gaps and strengthen accountability and clinical learning, the M

Latent trajectories of role adaptation in first-time pregnant women and their associations with pregnancy-specific psychological disorders: a longitudinal research protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy constitutes a pivotal developmental transition for primigravidas. Although inadequate maternal role adaptation is a recognised predictor of antenatal distress, most existing studies have employed cross-sectional designs or concentrated primarily on the postpartum period. Little is known about the dynamic, longitudinal patterns of role adaptation during pregnancy or how these trajectories shape stage-specific psychological challenges. This study seeks to identify latent heterogeneous trajectories of maternal role adaptation among primigravidas and to evaluate their assoc

Effect of premenstrual syndrome on the risk of postpartum depression within one year after childbirth among primiparous women: Evidence from TriNetX.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and postpartum depression (PPD) are hormonally mediated mood disorders occurring at different but physiologically related reproductive stages. Although previous studies suggest an association between PMS and PPD, evidence from cohort study regarding the effect of PMS on new-onset PPD remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between prepregnancy PMS and risk of new-onset PPD within one year after childbirth among primiparous women. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used data from the TriNetX global collaborative network. A total of

Exploring the effects of mental health on bonding and caregiving among pregnant and postpartum persons with likely depression and/or PTSD in South Africa: a qualitative analysis.

Perinatal mental health disorders place a particularly high public health burden on South Africa (SA) via adverse health outcomes for the birthing parent and for their infants, and contribute to emotional and behavioral problems later in childhood. There is little research exploring the anticipated impacts mental health symptoms have on one’s ability to emotionally connect or care for their infant after delivery. HIV-negative pregnant persons were recruited from an antenatal clinic in Cape Town as a part of a larger study investigating mental health barriers to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)

Birth Trauma and Postpartum Childbirth-related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Narrative Review of Pathology, Risk Factors, and Practice Recommendations.

IMPORTANCE: Trauma and childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder (c-PTSD) are underrecognized possible consequences of birth and obstetric care that may affect maternal well-being, parent-infant bonding, and future reproductive decisions. Despite a growing body of research, gaps remain in the implementation of robust screening, timely diagnosis, and trauma-informed practices to prevent and address c-PTSD. OBJECTIVE: Review our current understanding of psychological birth trauma and c-PTSD, emphasizing provider roles in prevention, identification, and management. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION:

Posttraumatic stress symptoms in sexual minority and majority women after difficult births: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Although giving birth is often a positive experience, some individuals may perceive it as traumatic, and may develop birth-related post-traumatic stress disorder (BR-PTSD). Sexual minority women, who may face minority stress during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, could be at an increased risk for BR-PTSD. AIM: To compare BR-PTSD symptoms between sexual minority and heterosexual women, following births that involved complications or were self-perceived as difficult experiences. METHODS: An explorative, small-scale cross-sectional survey was used to explore post-t

Associations between composite dietary antioxidant index and depressive symptoms among pregnant and postpartum women.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is a prevalent mood disorder associated with nutritional factors, yet the relationship between comprehensive dietary antioxidant capacity and perinatal depression remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the association between the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and depressive symptoms in a sample of U.S. perinatal women. METHODS: We analyzed a nationally representative sample of 1,093 pregnant and postpartum (within 18 months) women from NHANES 2005–2018. The CDAI, a composite metric integrating six key antioxidant nutrients (vitamins A, C,

The association between sleep trajectories throughout pregnancy and postpartum pain in individuals with overweight or obesity: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Pain after childbirth impacts maternal and infant outcomes. While sleep affects pain in adult populations, research during the perinatal period is limited. This study examines the association between sleep quality and duration before delivery and throughout pregnancy with pain during postpartum hospitalization. METHODS: This analysis included 118 pregnant individuals with a pre-pregnancy BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2. Group-based trajectory models identified patterns of self-reported sleep quality and duration at six prenatal visits. Pain was assessed every 8 h during the three-day postpartum ho

Effectiveness of the 'Thinking Healthy Program' to reduce antenatal depression in pregnant women in a tertiary care hospital: a quasi-experimental study in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: In developing countries, the prevalence of postpartum depression can range from being comparable to that of developed nations to twice as high. The ‘Thinking Healthy Program’ (THP) is an evidence-based intervention specifically designed to address perinatal depression. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of THP in reducing antenatal depression among pregnant women in Pakistan. METHODS: We recruited 220 participants from the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital in Lahore, Pakistan. Depression was screened using the Patient Health Que

Association between maternal and neonatal outcomes and psychosocial risk levels in pregnant women: a convergent parallel mixed methods study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal psychosocial health has gained significant attention due to its impact on maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Elevated rates of mental health disorders during pregnancy and the initial postpartum year, particularly pronounced in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), have been consistently linked to women's heightened exposure to psychosocial risk factors. In response to this evidence, the current investigation is designed to evaluate psychosocial risk status among pregnant women and to explore its associations with both maternal and neonatal outcomes, employing a c

AI-powered population-based birth cohort study in the Western Province of Sri Lanka: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Despite Sri Lanka’s long-standing success in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality, progress has stagnated in recent decades. Conventional surveillance systems lack granular, real-time data to predict and prevent adverse outcomes. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformative potential to improve risk prediction, early detection, and proactive management of maternal and neonatal complications. METHODS: This prospective birth cohort study will recruit 2,000 pregnant women in different stages of gestation across all 54 divisional health areas (DHA) in the Western Province, Sri L

Risk factors associated with maternal complications of caesarean delivery in Rwanda: a retrospective cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of Caesarean Section (CS) has significantly risen from 7% in 1990 to 21% in 2018, rising suspicion of unnecessary use of caesarean section based on WHO recommendations. In Rwanda, CS rates have significantly increased from 2.2% in 2000 to 15.6% in 2020, with nearly half of maternal deaths reported to be associated with caesarean deliveries. However, predictors of maternal complications of CS have not yet been studied in large scale, therefore, this study aimed to determine the risk factors associated with maternal complication of CS in Rwanda. METHODS: A retro

A randomized digital behavioral intervention for prenatal and postpartum weight outcomes in women with overweight or obesity: the GROWell trial.

BACKGROUND: Rising rates of overweight and obesity globally have led to an increasing number of women who enter pregnancy with excess weight, posing significant health risks to mothers and infants. Mobile health interventions, such as smartphone apps, may be a solution to improving pregnancy outcomes, however, limited randomized studies have examined this approach for gestational weight gain (GWG) and postpartum weight retention (PPWR). We report results from a double-blinded, randomized control trial of Goals for Reaching Optimal Wellness (GROWell), a mobile app and text-based intervention de

Emotional and dissociative responses to childbirth as predictors of postpartum PTSD symptoms: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are a significant mental health concern. Although obstetric complications are often considered central, growing evidence suggests that women's emotional and subjective responses to childbirth may play a more decisive role in the development of trauma-related symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of postpartum PTSD symptoms one month after childbirth and to identify the most relevant obstetric, psychological, and psychosocial risk factors, with a particular focus on emotional and dissociative responses.
