Weighing Risks and Benefits: Patient Perceptions on Using Medications for Opioid Use Disorder During and After Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) among pregnant and postpartum persons has increased in the last 20 years and poses risks to both birthing parent and fetus/child. Medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) can reduce these risks, yet engagement is limited among pregnant and postpartum persons with over half discontinuing in the postpartum year. Little research has explored pregnant and postpartum persons' reasons for using MOUD in pregnancy and decisions around (dis)continuing after childbirth. We sought to gain a deeper understanding of the reasons pregnant and postpartum persons use MOUD

Pregnancy and postpartum dynamics revealed by millions of lab tests.

Pregnancy and delivery involve dynamic alterations in many physiological systems. However, the physiological dynamics during pregnancy and after delivery have not been systematically analyzed at high temporal resolution in a large human population. Here, we present the dynamics of 76 lab tests based on a cross-sectional analysis of 44 million measurements from over 300,000 pregnancies. We analyzed each test at weekly intervals from 20 weeks preconception to 80 weeks postpartum, providing detailed temporal profiles. About half of the tests take 3 months to a year to return to baseline postpartu

Health related quality of life and associated factors after cesarean delivery among postpartum mothers in Gondar, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life following cesarean delivery can be compromised due to the physical, mental, and emotional impacts of surgery and anesthesia. Despite the critical nature of the postpartum period after cesarean delivery, it remains under-explored, with most studies focusing on vaginal deliveries and neglecting the unique challenges of cesarean recovery. Therefore, this study aimed to assess health related quality of life and associated factors after caesarean delivery among postpartum mothers in Gondar, Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in publi

Critical signs and symptoms for self-assessment in the immediate postnatal period: an international Systematic Scoping Review and Delphi consensus study.

BACKGROUND: Every two minutes a woman dies from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Most maternal deaths occur within the first 24 hours following birth, highlighting the importance of immediate postnatal care (iPNC). Self-care strategies are increasingly being employed to promote women-centred, continuous care provision. Despite international calls for development of strategies promoting self-care, none have been developed for self-monitoring in the immediate postnatal period. Fundamental to the development of a self-monitoring strategy, is an understanding of which signs and symptoms

Care of pregnant women with pre-existing medical conditions in German perinatal centers.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancies in women with chronic medical conditions are characterized by a higher maternal and perinatal complication rate during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The German Maternity Guideline does not provide specific recommendations for the care of these women. The aim of this study was to evaluate the care of pregnant women with pre-existing medical conditions in German perinatal centers (Level 1 and 2) and perinatal care level 3 hospitals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on guidelines and literature, seven topics were identified: preconception counseling, tim

Factors associated with late antenatal care booking in selected health facilities of Zoba Maekel, Eritrea: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal care is a special care provided for pregnant women with the aim of preventing, detecting, and treating health problems in both the fetus and mother. Early antenatal care attendance promotes early detection and treatment of complications which result in proper management during delivery and puerperium. However, the majority of pregnant women in Eritrea initiate their ANC booking late. The study aims to assess factors associated with late ANC booking among pregnant mothers attending selected antenatal care services in Zoba Maekel, Eritrea. METHOD: A health facility based c

Efficacy and Success of Immediate Postpartum IUD Insertion in a Northern Ontario Tertiary Care Centre.

OBJECTIVES: Immediate postpartum intrauterine device (PPIUD) insertion, despite being endorsed by the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada, is not a widely available practice in northern Ontario. This region is marked by obstetrical challenges such as delayed postpartum contraception discussions, high rates of missed follow-ups, and the use of less effective methods. This study aimed to assess the efficacy, adherence, and success of immediate PPIUD insertion in the northern Ontario context. METHODS: This exploratory proof of concept study was conducted at Health Sciences North

Depression among Latina women in the United States from pregnancy to early postpartum: longitudinal examination of risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The present study examined the prevalence of symptoms of depression throughout pregnancy and the early postpartum period (first trimester through six weeks postpartum) in low-income Latina women. Further, this study examined whether established risk factors in non-Latina women also predict perinatal depressive symptom trajectories in low-income Latinas. METHODS: The sample included 240 Latina women from a federally qualified health center (FQHC). RESULTS: Latent growth curve modeling found that, on average, symptoms of depression decreased from the first trimester of pregnancy th

Assessment of post-partum physical exercise practice and its associated factors among women in postpartum period, in West Wollega zone, Oromia, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The postnatal period, spanning the initial 6 weeks after childbirth, brings about a range of difficulties for mothers globally, encompassing psychological, physiological, and biological shifts. Incorporating regular physical activity during this phase has demonstrated the potential to mitigate the chances of chronic metabolic disorders. Nevertheless, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding women's engagement in postpartum physical exercise during this time. METHODS: The research employed a community-based cross-sectional study design carried out between April 20 a

Assessing the quality of life of postpartum mothers with episiotomy in the first six post-partum weeks: a descriptive cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: An episiotomy is making a controlled incision to the perineal region to enlarge the vaginal opening to facilitate difficult childbirths. According to evidence-based guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO), it is not recommended that this procedure be performed routinely due to its detrimental effects on mothers' postpartum quality of life (QOL). Therefore, this study aims to examine the QOL of postpartum mothers who experienced episiotomy during normal vaginal (NVD) delivery in a Tertiary care hospital in Sri Lanka. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was cond

Dutch Translation, Cultural Adaption, and Validation of the German Pelvic Floor Questionnaire for Pregnant and Postpartum Women.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pregnancy and childbirth are important risk factors for developing pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD). A valid and reliable screening instrument is essential for timely identification and treatment of PFD. The German Pelvic Floor Questionnaire for Pregnant and Postpartum women (PFQ-PP) assesses symptoms, severity, and impact on quality of life for the bladder function, bowel function, prolapse, and sexual health domain. However, no similar questionnaire exists in Dutch. This study was aimed at translating, culturally adapting, and validating the German PFQ-PP for use i

COVID-19 infection increases the risk of venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Pregnant and puerperal women are at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) owing to hemostatic changes in preparation for childbirth. The objective of this study was to investigate if COVID-19 infection was associated with VTE in pregnancy or 12 weeks postpartum when considering (prophylactic or therapeutic) anticoagulant use. This population-based register study included all women in Sweden and Norway giving birth after 22 gestational weeks, with conception dates from March 2020 to 2022. A PCR-verified COVID-19 test was used as the exposure, and a VTE diagnosis during pregnancy or 12
