Breastfeeding-injury link: are concerns warranted?

OBJECTIVE: Recreational and elite athletes report avoiding breastfeeding when returning to physical activity following childbirth due to a perceived increased risk of injury; yet, there are no empirical data to support this relationship. We aimed to examine the complex interaction of breastfeeding and physical activity and its potential impact on musculoskeletal injury. METHODS: Individuals (≥18 years) who participated in physical activity during their first year following childbirth were recruited to complete an online questionnaire that covered maternal demographics, reproductive history, h

Perinatal healthcare experiences of pregnant and parenting people with a history of substance use disorder: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Clinical guidelines in the United States (U.S.) recommend a patient-centered approach to healthcare for pregnant people with substance use disorders (SUD); however, pregnant people with SUD often describe experiencing stigmatization and shame when seeking prenatal care. We explored the perspectives of pregnant and parenting people engaged with SUD treatment regarding their experiences with healthcare providers during the perinatal period to improve guidance for patient-centered care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an adapted phenomenological approach, we conducted in-depth interview

The prospective association of prenatal anxiety symptoms in mothers and fathers with general child development 14 months postpartum and the mediating role of parent-child bonding: a mediation analysis within the longitudinal cohort study DREAM.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms during pregnancy are a frequent mental health issue for expectant mothers and fathers. Research revealed that prenatal anxiety symptoms can impact parent-child bonding and child development. This study aims to investigate the prospective relationship between prenatal anxiety symptoms and general child development and whether it is mediated by parent-child bonding. Considering the paucity of perinatal research on fathers, their inclusion is of particular interest. METHODS: Data were derived from the prospective cohort study DREAM including 1,544 mothers and 985 fat

Hypertension Experiences Affecting Recovery from Delivery (HEARD): a mixed-methods interview study of postpartum people affected by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum care for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) varies in terms of content, quality, and duration. People postpartum from pregnancies complicated by an HDP are known to have a variety of physical and emotional sequelae both from the HDP itself and associated complications (e.g., prematurity, traumatic birth). This study interviewed a geographically and socially diverse sample of recently postpartum people who had HDPs to better understand the needs of this population. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants recruited from social media. Bo

The relationship between pregnancy complaints and obsessive-compulsive behaviors during the postpartum period regarding baby care: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: It is known that complaints (nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, breast tenderness, etc.) that occur during pregnancy affect anxiety and mood changes related to childbirth. Complaints may impact women's adaptation to their new situations and roles in the postpartum period. The inability to cope with the postpartum period may cause increased complaints of obsessive-compulsive disorder in women. The present study investigated the relationship between pregnancy complaints and obsessive-compulsive behaviors during the postpartum period regarding baby care. METHODS: This descriptive,

Urinary incontinence during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.

Pregnancy and childbirth involve anatomical and physiological changes in the pelvic floor that can negatively affect the urinary-continence mechanism. Thus, in both periods, the rates of urinary incontinence increase notably, with stress urinary incontinence being the most common type. The pathophysiological mechanisms involved in urinary incontinence in pregnancy and postpartum are not fully understood. Stress urinary incontinence is more closely linked to urethral sphincter deficiency than to impaired urethral support, although both conditions have been noted during pregnancy and postpartum.

Pregnancy and Preconception Care for Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: For both men and women, family planning, including decisions regarding marriage and childbearing, is a significant life event that contributes to overall "happy life." Patients with chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease face not only concerns about common pregnancy-related complications but also disease-specific challenges, including the potential effects of medications on the fetus and the risk of disease exacerbation during pregnancy. In response to these concerns, patients may occasionally make misguided decisions, such as the self-discontinuation of necessary trea

Striae gravidarum in the Han Chinese pregnant population: identifying genetic markers and risk factors through a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Striae gravidarum (SG), commonly known as stretch marks, are a frequent connective tissue alteration observed in pregnant women. The presence of SG can negatively impact postpartum women's self-perception, potentially resulting in diminished self-esteem and psychological issues, including anxiety and depression. The study aimed to evaluate the potential risk factors and genetic associations of SG within a Chinese Han population. METHODS: A multicenter trial was conducted involving 1,017 pregnant women of Chinese Han descent who provided informed consent. Participants completed que

Pregnant for Nine Months, Postpartum for Life: Long-term Implications of Pregnancy Related Conditions.

Maternal mortality in the state of Missouri remains among the highest in the nation. Recognizing that the burden of making corrective actions does not rest solely with obstetric providers, it is time to consider how pregnancy affects our patients before, during, and after childbirth. Reviewing pregnancy history and pregnancy intention can be a chance to address modifiable risk factors to improve patient outcomes when providing medical care.

The mediating role of psychological birth trauma in association between childbirth satisfaction and the desire to avoid pregnancy among Iranian postpartum women.

OBJECTIVE: Iran's declining fertility rate is a major demographic concern. The desire to avoid pregnancy (DAP) is a key predictor of future fertility. While dissatisfaction with childbirth care and psychological birth trauma are known to negatively impact future fertility decisions, their specific pathways to influencing the desire to avoid future pregnancy remain unclear. This study therefore aimed to examine the relationship between mothers' satisfaction with childbirth care and their desire to avoid subsequent pregnancy, while investigating the mediating effect of childbirth-related psychol
