Bovine type II collagen administered to non-pregnant female DBA/1 mice caused arthritis in 55% of animals with a mean onset time of 70 days following immunization. In order to establish whether the maternity blues is peculiar to the puerperium a self-rating blues questionnaire was administered to women after childbirth and after surgery. A period of dysphoria, similar in many respects to the maternity blues, was experienced by women post-operatively. The main difference between maternity and post-operative patterns of dysphoria seemed to lie in the timing of the blues, but on closer analysis many post-operative dysphoric symptoms peaked in a similar way to those in the maternity group. A total of 112 women with different organic diseases of the spinal cord (spinal form of multiple sclerosis, myelitis, syringomyelia, etc.) were observed under clinical conditions. In the first group of women (n = 33) neurological complications made their first appearance in the course of pregnancy and parturition. In the second group (n = 79) the pregnancy ran in the presence of the already existent disease. The authors emphasized an adverse effect of pregnancy, parturition and puerperium on the course of organic diseases of the spinal cord.

A papillary mucinous cystadenoma of the ovary with unique benign epithelial atypia is presented. The tumor was removed from a 33-year-old puerperal woman. Morphologically, the lining epithelium of the cystadenoma strikingly resembled the so-called Arias-Stella reaction of the endometrial epithelium, a benign cellular atypia produced by chorionic tissue during pregnancy. The atypical epithelium of the endometrium is known to persist several weeks after parturition or abortion, and should not be misinterpreted as malignancy.

In the present review the world literature on pregnancy complicated by myocardial infarction is summarized, and two additional cases are presented. It is apparent that the majority of pregnant women who have died after myocardial infarction did so at the time of initial infarction, and maternal mortality was greatest if the infarction was late in pregnancy.
