During the years 1973-79, 704732 births took place in Sweden and 63 075 cesarean sections (CS) were performed. Within the study period there were 20 maternal deaths associated with delivery or puerperium. Thirteen of these patients were delivered by CS and 7 by the vaginal route. The hospital records of the 13 deaths associated with CS were closely analysed and it was found that 5 of the patients were critically ill before the beginning of surgery, and the CS per se was not responsible for these deaths. Data of 22,691 observations on parturition related problems (dystocia, calf mortality, milk fever, retained placenta, and mastitis) were collected from 27 cooperating California dairy herds. The use of radiotelemetric apparatuses made it possible to record the heart rhythm through registering the R peak with cows during the puerperal period. Studied were a total of 212 cows. From Aug 1, 1979 to Aug 15, 1980, a total of 624 samples were collected from the vaginas, cervices, and uteri of 208 dairy cows 30 to 37 days after parturition. An additional 90 samples were collected from the reproductive tracts from 30 of the 208 cows. The 30 cows had aborted or were repeat breeders. Samples from cows that had aborted were collected within a week after clinical abortion or immediately after rectal palpation revealed subclinical abortion. All samples were tested for the presence of cytopathogenic viruses. All samples were negative.

Toxic-shock syndrome occurred in a mother and possibly in her infant in the immediate postpartum period. Staphylococcus aureus of identical phage type and antibiogram was recovered from mucous membranes in both patients. Staphylococci were transmitted from mother to infant during parturition. These cases represent the first postpartum clinical description and possible vertical transmission of this disease.

Our objective was to characterize changes in vitamin D metabolites of plasma in Jersey cows fed a prepartum low-calcium diet. Eight cows were fed a high-calcium diet (80 g/day) and eight were fed a low-calcium diet (8 g/day) at least 14 days before parturition.
