Maternal deaths are among the most critical global health indicators and directly reflect the quality of obstetric care. In this context, it is crucial to define and evaluate maternal mortality accurately. The aim of this study was to identify the factors leading to maternal deaths, and to assess the burden of trauma-related deaths. The autopsies of maternal deaths conducted at the Morgue Department of the Ankara Group Presidency of the Council of Forensic Medicine between 2011 and 2025 were retrospectively recorded through the National Judicial Network system. A total of 63 cases were identif

Epilepsy in pregnancy is common, but it remains a major risk factor for maternal morbidity and mortality. Over the last decade, neurological causes have remained in the top three indirect causes of maternal death in the UK. National reports, including the recent maternity care bundle, have emphasised the importance of preconceptual counselling to optimise maternal health and reduce complications for epileptic women during pregnancy and postpartum. This study is a retrospective medical record review, examining records of epileptic women of childbearing age, taken from a general practitioner (GP

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, lowering maternal mortality is a top priority. While significant efforts have been made to address direct obstetric complications, indirect causes such as pre-existing medical conditions that are aggravated by pregnancy remain a major cause of mortality but are often unrecognized. Understanding indirect maternal mortality prevalence and patterns is crucial for creating focused interventions.
METHODS: Data were explored from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study 2021. Maternal mortality ratio (MMR), maternal mortality rate (MM Rate), disability-adjusted life years (

From a procedure of last resort that caused the death of most mothers and babies, the cesarean delivery has become a lifesaving delivery method and the most common major surgical procedure performed worldwide. The first modern cesarean deliveries, based on accurate anatomic knowledge, were performed 250 years ago. The development of new surgical and anesthesia techniques, antibiotics, uterotonics, blood transfusion, and neonatal care over the last 100 years has transformed the perinatal outcomes of cesarean delivery. The epidemiology of cesarean delivery has changed over the last 30 years with

BACKGROUND: We examined long-term trends in age-specific and cause-specific maternal mortality and assessed shifts in the relative contributions of direct versus indirect obstetric causes from 1983 to 2023 in Korea.
METHODS: In this population-based observational study, we analyzed all registered maternal deaths (International Classification of Diseases-10 O00-O99) among women aged 15-49 years and corresponding live births in Republic of Korea (= South Korea) from 1983 through 2023. Annual age-specific maternal mortality ratios (MMRs) per 100,000 live births were calculated using data from th

BACKGROUND: Approximately half of the epilepsy cases lack a documented cause. Despite growing evidence linking maternal diabetes to pregnancy complications and impaired child neurodevelopment, little is known about its potential association with child epilepsy. This study aims to determine whether intrauterine exposure to maternal pre-existing type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of epilepsy in children.
METHODS: This study included live-born children without major malformations in Sweden from 1998 to 2021.

Background/Objectives: The maternal mortality ratio is one of the global health indicators, and cardiopathies are the leading indirect causes of maternal deaths. Proper management of pregnant women with heart disease is crucial, as the severity of these conditions can lead to complications during the perinatal period. This study aimed to evaluate the rate of severe maternal morbidity and associated factors in pregnant women with heart disease. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at a referral hospital in São Paulo from 2008 to 2017, including pregnant women with heart disease w

BACKGROUND: Despite global declines in the maternal mortality ratio (MMR), significant disparities persist across regions and socioeconomic strata. This study aims to examine spatiotemporal trends in MMR from 1990 to 2021, with a specific breakdown by age, socio-demographic index (SDI) and cause of death, to better clarify the underlying determinants of these patterns.
METHODS: Utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2021, we examined MMR trends attributable to ten distinct causes across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Analyses were stratified by the SDI,

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a critical barrier to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.1 (target: Maternal mortality ratios (MMR) < 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030). Southeast Asia accounts for ~ 20% of global maternal deaths, with substantial disparities between and within countries. This study analyzed trends (1990–2021) and projected (to 2050) MMR in Southeast Asia using the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database, addressing gaps in regional granularity. METHODS: Data GBD 2021, covering MMR and age-standardized MMR (ASMR) for 1990–2021, stratified by countr

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mortality among immigrants in Brazil. This was a descriptive study of maternal deaths that occurred between 2014 and 2021. The frequency of deaths and underlying causes of death were analyzed. The ratio between the average number of deaths before and during the pandemic were calculated. Of the 14,205 deaths, 136 were immigrants and 14,069 were Brazilian. The excess mortality was higher for immigrants (2.10; 1.40-3.04) than for Brazilian women (1.53; 1.40-1.59), with a significant increase for Venezuelans (7.46

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is one of the most common congenital infections worldwide and a leading cause of prenatal neurological disorders, sensorineural hearing loss, and stillbirth. The placental factors involved in CMV transmission from mother to fetus remain poorly understood. We aimed to evaluate the histopathological placental findings associated with first-trimester CMV infection in relation to stillbirth and symptomatic presentation in newborns. This retrospective case-control study analyzed pregnancies with confirmed first-trimester CMV infection followed at 2 tertiary referral hospitals

Maternal deaths from indirect obstetric cause result from a preexisting condition or a condition that occurred during pregnancy without obstetric causes but was aggravated by the physiological effects of pregnancy. Twenty-nine deaths with an indirect cause related to a preexisting condition, excluding circulatory diseases or infections, were analysed by the expert committee. Pre-pregnancy pathology was documented in 16 women (epilepsy, n=7; amyloid angiopathy, n=1; Dandy-Walker syndrome, n=1; autoimmune diseases, n=3; diffuse infiltrative pneumonitis, n=1; thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura,

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity is associated with stillbirth, but uncertainty persists around the effects of higher obesity classes. We sought to compare the risk of stillbirth associated with maternal obesity alone versus maternal obesity and additional or undiagnosed factors contributing to high-risk pregnancy.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the Better Outcomes Registry and Network (BORN) for singleton hospital births in Ontario between 2012 and 2018. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression and logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between
