Maternal deaths in Bloemfontein, South Africa--1986-1992.

OBJECTIVE: Determination of the maternal mortality ratio and the main causes of maternal death. SETTING: Pelonomi Hospital, a tertiary care and referral hospital in Bloemfontein. METHODS: Review of prospectively completed structured questionnaires on all maternal deaths from 1986 to 1992. RESULTS: The maternal mortality ratio at our institution was 171 per 100 000 live births. Haemorrhage (25%), infection (24%) and hypertensive disease (18%) were the most important causes of death. Seventy-one per cent were direct obstetric deaths and 23% indirect; in the remaining 6%, the cause was uncerta

A comparison of sisterhood information on causes of maternal death with the registration causes of maternal death in Matlab, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: To explore whether causes of maternal death can be investigated using the sisterhood method, an indirect method for providing a community-based estimate of the level of maternal mortality, this study compares the sisterhood causes of maternal death with the Matlab Demographic Surveillance System's (DSS) causes of maternal death. METHODS: Data for this study came from the Matlab DSS, which has been in operation since 1966 as a field site of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. The maternal deaths that occurred during the 15-year period from 1976 to

[The presence in pregnant women of the risk factor of serum antibodies against 9 viruses with significance in materno-infantile pathology and the transfer of these antibodies to the newborns].

Indirect enzyme immunoassay, performed with Labsystems (Helsinki) kits, in 30 mothers and their newborns, revealed that 100% of parturient women present IgG antibody to hepatitis A (HAV), herpes simplex 1, and measles viruses, constantly transferring these antibodies to their newborns. 78.6% of the women had IgG to rubella (German measles) virus, passively transmitting them to their offsprings. Serological markers (HBsAg and anti-HBc) of hepatitis B virus infection were present in 42% of the investigated women, anti-HBc being also present in the serum of the newborns. Treatment and results of chronic toxoplasmosis. Analysis of 33 cases.

Women who grew up in Turkey, where undercooked meat is part of the usual diet, have an increased risk of toxoplasmosis. This study covers treatment and prognosis of 33 cases with chronic toxoplasmosis. The study group was selected among the patients with a history of repeated abortions, recurrent preterm labor, stillbirths and babies with congenital anomaly after all other causative reasons were ruled out. IgG and IgM antibody titers were detected by Sabin-Feldman's dye test and indirect fluorescence antibody test. 33 patients, who had negative IgM and IgG antibody titers above 1/64, were acce

Malaria in pregnancy.

In its booklet 'Tropical Diseases 1990' the World Health Organization (WHO) Division of Control of Tropical Diseases (CTD) said, "Malaria remains the most important of the tropical diseases--widespread throughout the tropics, but also occurring in many temperate regions". The size of the malarial scourge was estimated as: number of people infected 267 million; clinical cases 107 million/year; mortality 1-2 million/year; number of people at risk 2100 million. Immunity to malaria is reduced in pregnancy. This makes the disease particularly dangerous for pregnant women, especially for nulliparae.

Maternal mortality and its prevention.

Maternal mortality rates in developed countries have declined steeply during the last 50 years. The introduction of sulphonamides and blood transfusion techniques contributed much to lowering maternal mortality rates. The maternal mortality rate in The Netherlands in 1983-1988 was 8.8/100,000 livebirths. In 57% substandard care factors could be identified. This suggests that further improvement in preventing maternal mortality is possible. Maternal mortality rates in developing countries are still unacceptably high as a result of high fertility and a high risk of dying each time a woman become

Incidence and causes of maternal mortality in five Kampala hospitals, 1980-1986.

This report presents results of a descriptive study to estimate the mortality rate, identify the type and the causes of maternal deaths. The study was conducted in 1987 in Kampala hospitals for a period covering seven years from 1st January 1980 to 31st December, 1986. The non abortion maternal mortality rate (NAMMR) was 2.65 per 1000 deliveries while the abortion related maternal mortality rate (ARMMR) was 3.58 per 1000 abortions. There was a statistically significant increase in NAMMR while the increase in ARMMR was almost significant over the seven year period. Of all maternal deaths, 80 pe

The prognostic value of antinuclear antibodies in women with recurrent pregnancy losses: a prospective controlled study.

Because autoimmune diseases are suspected of causing some cases of recurrent pregnancy loss, we sought clinical and serologic evidence of such diseases in a group of 277 women with recurrent pregnancy loss. Using HEp-2 cells as targets for an indirect immunofluorescence test for antinuclear antibodies, we compared the frequency of a positive antinuclear antibody test in the women with recurrent pregnancy loss to that in 299 pregnant controls and 119 nonpregnant controls. The frequency of positive antinuclear antibody tests at a titer of 1:40 or higher was 16.3% in cases, 16.6% in pregnant cont

[Maternal mortality, its definition and assessment. Report of maternal mortality at the Bamberg Gynecologic Clinic 1963-1988].

During the period of observation from 1963-1988 (26 years) 16 maternal deaths during pregnancy, birth and post partum were registered among 59,681 births at the Departm. of Obstetr. and Gynaec. Bamberg. This corresponds to a maternal mortality ratio of 0.26%. Thirteen of the deaths were direct material deaths, three cases of death belong in the category of indirect deaths. In this timeframe 4,257 (7.13%) C-sections were done. The rate of C-sections has almost tripled during the last 26 years, increasing from 3.6% in 1963 to 10.1% in 1988. In 10 cases maternal death followed a C-section. Taking

Maternal mortality in North Carolina: a forty-year experience.

An analysis of 67 maternal deaths from January 1, 1981, through December 31, 1985, are reported in detail and in the perspective of 3780 maternal deaths previously reviewed in North Carolina since January 1, 1946. Although the direct obstetric mortality rate has decreased 95% over the 40 years, within causal mortality groups the rates have changed variably during the past 5 years. For the first time, no deaths from obstetric infection occurred. Whereas deaths from toxemia continue to decline, those from hemorrhage, embolism, and anesthetic complications remain unchanged. Within the hemorrhage

Obstetric deaths in Menoufia Governorate, Egypt.

A survey of all registered deaths which occurred during 1981-1983 in women of reproductive age was carried out in Menoufia Governorate, Egypt. Surviving family members were interviewed by trained social workers, and information was collected on symptoms of the disease that led to death. The completed questionnaires were reviewed by a panel of local physicians and a cause of death was assigned by the panel. Maternal mortality was a leading cause of death, second only to heart disease. There were 190 maternal deaths per 100,000 livebirths and 45 maternal deaths per 100,000 married women aged bet

Maternal mortality in Bahrain with special reference to sickle cell disease.

The maternal mortality in Bahrain during the 10-year period, 1977-1986, was 33.9 per 100,000 livebirths; the second 5-year period showed a significant reduction (26.9) compared to the first 5-year period (42.3). Haemorrhage, pulmonary embolism, hypertensive diseases of pregnancy and infection were the main causes of maternal mortality. Sickle cell disease was found to be an underlying cause in about one third of the maternal deaths. Avoidable factors were present in 38% of the cases, the majority being due to the failure of the patients to seek medical care or follow medical advice. Health edu

Serotypes of Ureaplasma urealyticum isolated from normal pregnant women and patients with pregnancy complications.

To compare the distribution of Ureaplasma urealyticum serotypes 1 to 10 in different patient populations, the serotypes of 240 U. urealyticum strains from 207 patients were determined by the indirect immunofluorescence test by using U. urealyticum antisera 1 to 10. Strains were obtained from the following four patient groups: group 1, 24 couples in which the women had a history of recurrent spontaneous abortion; group 2, 25 patients who had their first spontaneous abortion; group 3, 14 pregnant patients with pregnancy complications (premature delivery, intrauterine death); and group 4, 138 pat
