[A retrospective search for maternal transmission of Chagas infection from patients in the chronic phase].

Maternal transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi from 278 children of 145 mothers, chronically infected with this protozoan, to their offspring was investigated. This study was based upon serological tests. In only two cases (2/278 = 0.70%), such mode of transmission was demonstrated to have occurred. However, as according to extant records both patients had also been breast-fed, and the contribution of this factor could not be ruled out. In any case, maternal transmission, an alternative mode of acquiring the infection with Trypanosoma cruzi, was demonstrated. The methodology used is a further cont

Regulation of the resistance to nematode parasites of single- and twin-bearing Merino ewes through nutrition and genetic selection.

Periparturient Merino ewes obtained from lines of sheep that had been selected either for increased resistance to Haemonchus contortus (R) or at random (C) were supplemented, while grazing at pasture, with either nil or 250 g/day cottonseed meal (CSM) for the 6 weeks prior to or the 6 weeks after the start of parturition. Ewes from both supplement groups had lower (mean 66% reduction) faecal egg counts (FECs) during the postpartum period and this coincided with a period of maternal body weight loss. Factors which increased the rate of maternal body weight loss, such as pregnancy and lactation

[Vertical transmission of HIV in Denmark].

INTRODUCTION: Vertical transmission of HIV can be reduced if the pregnant woman and new born child receive antiretroviral treatment. Delivery by caesarean section and avoidance of breast feeding further reduce vertical transmission. The aim of this study was to describe the treatment of HIV-positive pregnant women in Denmark and the risk of vertical transmission. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively describe the risk of vertical transmission of HIV among HIV-positive women giving birth in Denmark during the period, mid-1994 to February 2000. RESULTS: Fifty children were born. One mother

Antiretrovirals for reducing the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection.

BACKGROUND: At the end of 2000 it was estimated that over 36 million people were living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This includes 1.4 million children less than 15 years of age. This is one of several reviews assessing the available evidence for preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection. The other reviews will address other interventions, including Caesarean section, breast feeding, vaginal lavage and vitamin A supplementation. OBJECTIVES: To assess which antiretroviral therapies may be effective in decreasing the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV inf

[Factors associated with acceptance of postpartum tubal ligation among HIV-infected women].

OBJECTIVE: To identify the factors associated with the acceptance of tubal ligation after childbirth among HIV-infected patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A case-control study was conducted from March 1988 to February 1999, at Mexico's National Institute of Perinatology (INPer), in 72 HIV-positive pregnant women. Cases were 49 women who accepted postpartum tubal ligation after childbirth, and controls were 23 women who refused this birth control method. Data collected for each patient were demographic characteristics, sexual and reproductive history, and HIV status. Statistical analysis consiste

Antibody responses in pregnancy-induced transmammary transmission of Ancylostoma caninum hookworm larvae.

Third stage larvae of the Ancylostoma caninum hookworm nematode have the capacity to infect a dog, abort the normal maturation pathway to become blood-feeding intestinal worms, and instead distribute throughout the body in a developmentally arrested state that is relatively resilient to most chemotherapeutic agents. During pregnancy, a percentage of the arrested larvae reactivate and transmit via the mammary glands to infect the nursing puppies with resulting iron-deficiency anemia and potential mortality. To determine if the suppression of parasite-specific antibody responses during pregnancy

Periparturient rise in fecal egg counts associated with prolactin concentration increase in French Alpine dairy goats.

Previous data on periparturient relaxation of immunity during gastrointestinal nematode infection in goats are scarce and conflicting; one study carried out in fiber (Angora) goats showed a positive association of fecal egg counts with prolactin concentrations around parturition, whereas the two other available studies dealing with dairy goats, gave divergent results. The objectives of the study were thus to assess the occurrence of a periparturient rise in fecal egg counts in dairy goats and to examine a possible relationship between the level of milk production and the intensity of the perip

Teratogen update: congenital rubella.

It is apparent that there are many unanswered questions about the pathogenesis of CRS. For instance, the chance of embryonic infection decreases in the second semester only to increase again in the third trimester. This is presumably due to unspecified changes in the placenta. When the embryo is infected early in the first trimester it does not appear to have any conventional immunological response to prevent spread of the virus. Yet it has been suggested that only 1 in 10(3) to 10(5) of its cells become infected. If this is true, what controls the spread of the virus in the early embryo? Why

Cigarette smoking and maternal-child HIV transmission.

We investigated the association of cigarette smoking with maternal-child HIV transmission, adjusting for illicit drug use, maternal clinical status, and delivery factors. Vital statistics birth data were linked to the New York State Medicaid HIV/AIDS Research Database for HIV-infected women delivering a liveborn singleton from 1988 through 1990. Follow-up of these children was accomplished by Medicaid data > or = 2 years after birth, and their HIV status was ascertained by a clinically based classification. The adjusted relative risk or hazard (RH) of transmission for maternal factors was dete

Mother-to-infant HIV transmission: timing, risk factors and prevention.

Identifying when--during pregnancy, delivery or the postnatal period--transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) from mother to infant usually takes place is critical to the development of methods to prevent maternal-infant transmission. Evidence is reviewed in this paper as to whether transmission occurs prepartum (early or late in gestation), intrapartum, or postpartum with breast feeding. Evidence in support of the notion of prepartum transmission has come from isolation of HIV from aborted fetal organs, comparison of maternal-child viral genotypes and study of neonatal cell-mediate

Clearance of HIV infection in 12 perinatally infected children: clinical, virological and immunological data.

OBJECTIVE: A case of HIV infection clearance in a perinatally infected infant has been recently reported. We report here on the molecular, biological and clinical features of such virus clearance in 12 children. DESIGN AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of the diagnosis in our 6-year cohort of 188 children born to HIV-seropositive mothers. HIV-1 was detected by coculture of infant peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) with cord blood cells, direct culture of infant cells, and DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The children were diagnosed three times during the first 3 mo

Influence of sex and reproductive status on susceptibility of ruminants to nematode parasitism.

Bulls and rams are notorious among stockmen and stud breeders for their apparently greater susceptibility than cows, ewes, steers or wethers to diseases caused by excessive infection with parasitic nematodes. Extension advice given to farmers generally includes a recommendation to treat entire male animals as though they were weaners. In contrast, the scientific literature contains little documentation of this fact, although the phenomenon has been well-described in laboratory animals. Scientific interest in the susceptibility of lactating cows and especially ewes to nematode parasitism has be

An association of faecal egg counts and prolactin concentrations in sera of periparturient Angora goats.

Faecal egg counts and serum prolactin concentrations in 13 pregnant and five non-pregnant Angora goats were monitored over a period of 20 weeks. The mean weekly egg counts of pregnant goats were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those of non-pregnant goats. In pregnant goats the mean egg counts in the 6 week post-partum period were significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those of 6 weeks prepartum. The mean prolactin concentration of pregnant goats during the 6 week post-partum period was significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than that of 6 weeks pre-partum. During the 6 to 3

Transmammary transmission of mesocercariae of Alaria marcianae (Trematoda) in experimentally infected primates.

A lactating primate, Callithrix jacchus, was infected experimentally with 600 mesocercariae of Alaria marcianae 10 days after parturition to determine if she would transmit the mesocercariae to her offspring. Her twin infants were examined 4 wk postinoculation and 16 mesocercariae were found in their tissues. The female was mated again and gave birth to a litter of triplets. She was not given additional mesocercariae. One infant died within hours of birth without suckling and was found negative for any stage of A. marcianae. The other 2 were allowed to nurse for 5 wk, examined and found to be

Herpes gestationis.

Herpes gestationis is a rare, pruritic, non-viral, polymorphic dermatosis of pregnancy and the puerperium. Lesions in this disorder are typified by pruritic vesiculobullae and urticarial plaques distributed over the abdomen, buttocks, and extremities. HG tends to recur in subsequent pregnancies and often flares at delivery. Although HG usually resolves within weeks to months of parturition, patients may experience a flare of disease after taking oral contraceptives or in response to other hormonal stimuli. Biopsy specimens from lesional sites demonstrate characteristic but not diagnostic featu

Epidemiology and cause of deaths among women in rural Bangladesh.

A total of 542 women aged 15 to 44 years died during the 10-year period 1976 to 1985 in the control area of Matlab, an area with a population of 90,000, representative of many other rural areas of southern Bangladesh. The corresponding age-specific mortality rate was 290 per 100,000 women 15-44 years. These deaths have been analysed retrospectively, using information collected through the Demographic Surveillance System set up by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) and verbal autopsies conducted in the homes. Of these deaths, 175 (32%) were due to inf
