Assessment of safety and immunogenicity of a protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine (ABDALA) in pregnant women: a single-cohort, multicenter, observational ESPIRTA study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant and lactating women are generally excluded from clinical trials during vaccine development. While the safety, inmunogenicity, efficacy, and effectiveness of the Abdala vaccine against COVID-19 have been demonstrated in the general population, there is a lack of specific information regarding its benefits for pregnant women. Consequently, this study was undertaken to evaluate the safety of the Abdala vaccine in pregnant women and their newborns, as well as to assess the maternal immune response elicited by the vaccination and its capacity for passive immunity transfer to th

Assessment of face mask use in peripartum women during the COVID-19 pandemic: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in significant mortality, particularly in vulnerable groups, including pregnant women. Unavailability of a vaccine in South Africa until February 2021 and slow rollout made it important for the prevention of transmission to rely on non-pharmaceutical interventions such as face mask use. We aimed to assess the rate of face mask use in peripartum women in a secondary hospital in South Africa and to determine knowledge of and reasons for use and non-use of face masks. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional quantitative study

[Excess of maternal deaths among immigrants, during the pandemic, in Brazil].

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mortality among immigrants in Brazil. This was a descriptive study of maternal deaths that occurred between 2014 and 2021. The frequency of deaths and underlying causes of death were analyzed. The ratio between the average number of deaths before and during the pandemic were calculated. Of the 14,205 deaths, 136 were immigrants and 14,069 were Brazilian. The excess mortality was higher for immigrants (2.10; 1.40-3.04) than for Brazilian women (1.53; 1.40-1.59), with a significant increase for Venezuelans (7.46

Severe pregnancy-associated atypical hemolytic uremia syndrome in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic: a novel survival case report.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy-associated atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a form of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) caused by uncontrolled activation of the complement system during pregnancy or the postpartum period. In the intensive care unit, aHUS must be differentiated from sepsis-related multiple organ dysfunction, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet (HELLP) syndrome. Early recognition of aHUS is critical for effective treatment and improved prognosis. Although tests such as the ADAMTS13 level, peripheral blood smears, comple

"I am scared, I do not want to lie": exploring the impacts of COVID-19 on engagement in care, perceived health, relationship dynamics, and parenting among postpartum women with HIV in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 and efforts to manage widespread infection may compromise HIV care engagement. The COVID-19-related factors linked to reduced HIV engagement have not been assessed among postpartum women with HIV, who are at heightened risk of attrition under non-pandemic circumstances. To mitigate the effects of the pandemic on care engagement and to prepare for future public health crises, it is critical to understand how COVID-19 has impacted (1) engagement in care and (2) factors that may act as barriers to care engagement. METHODS: A quantitative assessment of COVID-19-related experi

A case of postpartum thyroiditis following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) is characterized by mild thyrotoxicosis occurring within one year of parturition commonly followed by transient hypothyroidism. Having genetic background of autoimmune thyroid disorders is a risk factor for it because the immune reactivation during postpartum period is a trigger for PPT. Pandemic of COVID-19: caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection is a global health problem, and occurrence of Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis after the viral infection have been reported but occurrence of PPT with COVID-19 has never been reported. A 29-year-old woman developed gen
