Pregnancy history, recency of childbirth, and outcomes in young women with early-stage breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer (BC) diagnosed during pregnancy or postpartum often presents with aggressive features, potentially influenced by hormonal, immunological, and tissue remodeling changes. Studies have suggested that postpartum BC may be associated with worse outcomes, though most evidence is retrospective and constrained by methodological limitations. This study evaluated associations between pregnancy history, recency of childbirth, and long-term outcomes in a prospective cohort of young patients with early-stage BC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients aged ≤40 years with stage I-III BC en

Postpartum depressive symptoms and associated factors among women with lactation mastitis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Lactation mastitis is a common complication during breastfeeding that can negatively impact maternal well-being and breastfeeding continuation. While the physical manifestations of lactation mastitis have been widely studied, its psychological burden and related contributing factors among affected women have received comparatively less attention. This study aimed to investigate postpartum depressive symptoms and associated factors in women diagnosed with lactation mastitis. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 87 women with lactation mastitis at a tertiary hospita

Fecal incontinence from early pregnancy to 12 months postpartum: A longitudinal cohort study from Tuscany.

INTRODUCTION: Fecal incontinence (FI) during pregnancy and after childbirth is an underrecognized condition that may affect women's physical, psychological, and social well-being. Evidence on its prevalence and determinants over the full perinatal period remains limited. This study aimed to assess the evolution of FI from early pregnancy to 12 months postpartum and to identify sociodemographic, clinical, obstetric, and care-related factors associated with symptom severity and occurrence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using data from a regional longitudinal mate

Women's perspectives on health service integration for multi-morbidity in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum in a high-burden setting.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and infant health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) remain below global targets. Greater integration of health services within routine antenatal care and infant immunization is a priority but has had variable success when implemented. We aimed to understand coexisting health needs for integrated services among women and infants and elevate women's views on health service delivery and planning. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal study of 699 pregnant women and their infants in Papua New Guinea from first antenatal visit to 1 year postpartum. We collect

Determinants of puerperal sepsis among postpartum women at public hospital in Gedeo Zone, southern Ethiopia, 2023: unmatched case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization records 295,000 maternal deaths during childbirth each year, of which 15% are due to postpartum sepsis. In Ethiopia, it is the third cause of maternal death after hemorrhage and hypertension. However, data on the determinants of puerperal sepsis in the study area are scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify determinants of puerperal sepsis among postpartum women at a public hospital in Gedeo Zone, southern Ethiopia, in 2023. METHODS: A hospital-based, unmatched case–control study was conducted among 475 postpartum women (119 cases and 356 cont

Prognosis of Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer: A Systematic Review of Contemporary Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is uncommon but increasingly encountered as more women delay childbearing. Its prognostic impact remains controversial, particularly for cancers diagnosed in the early postpartum period. We aimed to synthesize contemporary evidence on the prognosis of breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy or within 12 months after delivery compared with breast cancer in other young women, with a specific focus on differences between pregnancy time and postpartum disease. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of observational studies publi

Clinical and Pathological Characteristics and Prognosis of Breast Cancer During Pregnancy and Postpartum: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

PURPOSE: The prognostic impact of the interval between the most recent childbirth and breast cancer diagnosis remains insufficiently defined, particularly when breast cancer diagnosed during pregnancy (PrBC) is distinguished from postpartum breast cancer (PPBC). In this multicenter Chinese cohort, we aimed to validate and extend prior observations regarding the association between time since recent childbirth, clinicopathological features, and outcomes. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 12 453 patients aged 18-55 years with stage I to IV breast cancer for descripti

Association of gestational diabetes with other lactation-related disorders: A 2-sample Mendelian randomization analysis of causal effects.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with adverse metabolic outcomes and may also be related to postpartum breast and lactation disorders. Observational studies are susceptible to confounding and reverse causation. We used a 2-sample Mendelian randomization design to examine the association between genetic liability to GDM and other disorders of the breast and lactation associated with childbirth. Genetic liability to GDM was associated with higher odds of a composite phenotype of breast and lactation disorders associated with childbirth. Replication using independent samples and

Postpartum ovarian vein thrombosis: plain CT with clinical indicators-diagnostic performance and clinical application.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum ovarian vein thrombosis (POVT) is a rare but serious condition, often presenting with nonspecific symptoms and potentially leading to life-threatening complications such as pulmonary embolism. The utility of plain computed tomography (CT) in POVT remains unexplored. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 25 POVT patients and 27 postpartum controls with fever or abdominal pain. CT parameters, including plain and enhanced thrombus CT values and their ratios to the inferior vena cava (IVC), along with clinical markers, were measured and compared. Random forest models were co

Childbirth-related posttraumatic stress disorder and postpartum depression following cesarean delivery.

Maternal mental health disorders are fairly common during the perinatal period, predominantly mood- and trauma-related disorders, first episodes or relapses. Untreated, these mental health conditions can have a significant impact on the health of the mother, her child, and family functioning. These disorders remain underdiagnosed during the postpartum period. Obstetric care providers must understand the stakes involved and recognize the need to assess mothers' emotional well-being in the postpartum period-an essential opportunity for early detection and intervention for maternal mental health

Postpartum Psychosis: could genetic vulnerability to insomnia or short sleep duration be protective?

Postpartum Psychosis (PP) is a severe and understudied perinatal mental illness which disproportionately affects women with bipolar disorder (BD). A relationship between sleep disturbance and PP is often assumed, but is poorly understood. From a cohort of 2099 individuals with BD, 343 parous women were identified and screened for perinatal psychiatric complications. We compared 117 women who developed PP with 226 who did not. Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) for BD, schizophrenia, insomnia, short sleep, long sleep, sleep efficiency and sleep duration were computed using PRS-CS. Logistic regression

Factors associated with inadequate iron supplementation among pregnant women in the Brazilian Unified Health System: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational anemia remains an important public health problem, especially in developing countries, and is associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes. Prophylactic iron supplementation during pregnancy is a simple and effective strategy to prevent this condition and is routinely recommended during prenatal care. In Brazil, supplements are provided free of charge through the public health system; however, adherence to treatment remains variable. This study aimed to identify the sociodemographic and healthcare-related factors associated with inadequate iron supplementatio

Chronic liver disease questionnaire analysis in pregnant women with hepatitis B: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Although domestic and international guidelines increasingly emphasize preventing mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV), the multidimensional impacts of HBV infection on pregnant women's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) have received insufficient attention. Our previous 1:1 matched cohort study [1] identified HBV infection as an independent risk factor for impaired HRQoL in pregnant women, after adjusting for age, gestational age, and parity. Building upon this foundation, this study is a longitudinal descriptive investigation within the population of

Biological Mother-To-Child Living Donor Liver Transplantation: Early Vs. Late Postpartum Donation.

INTRODUCTION: Biological parental donations provide the best option for many pediatric recipients, yielding unique immunological benefits that may enable minimization of immunosuppression in transplanted children. However, living related maternal donation in the postpartum period may introduce an increased risk of donor complications due to the physiological changes of pregnancy and childbirth, and the optimal timing of postpartum living donation is unknown. METHODS: Using US national registry data, we characterized donor and recipient outcomes for pediatric living donor liver transplants per

SUCCESSFUL PREGNANCY AND TERM DELIVERY AFTER RADICAL SURGERY FOR COLON CANCER: A CASE REPORT.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies worldwide, but pregnancy following curative resection for CRC is rarely reported. Concerns about cancer recurrence, hormonal influences, and obstetrical risks often lead to hesitation in counseling young cancer survivors who desire pregnancy. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 40-year-old woman who presented with obstructive colon cancer at age 37 while 7 weeks pregnant with triplets. Due to the patient's critical condition, left hemicolectomy was performed on July 10, 2022, followed by vacuum aspiration of the uterine cav

Antimicrobial Component Concentrations in the Milk of Peripartum Goats.

The aim of this study was to investigate changes in milk conditions and antimicrobial components in goats during 8 weeks prepartum and 1 week postpartum. Milk was collected weekly from seven prepartum goats 8 weeks before the due day, immediately, and 1 week after parturition. Milk color scores and the concentration of antimicrobial components (cathelicidin-7 and S100A8) were significantly increased prepartum. There was a significant decrease in milk viscosity, color scores, somatic cell count, and antimicrobial components (lactoferrin and cathelicidin-2, 7) after kidding. However, S100A7 leve

Vaccarin treats lactation insufficiency through the ALKBH5-SFRP2-Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGIC SIGNIFICANCE: Vaccarin, a natural small molecule extracted from Gypsophila vaccaria (L.) Sm., is an active flavonoid glycoside. BACKGROUND: Lactation insufficiency refers to insufficient milk secretion in women after childbirth, which affects the feeding of infants and even their development. Our preliminary experiments showed that alkylation repair homolog protein 5 (ALKBH5) was abnormally overexpressed in mammary tissue of lactation deficiency model rats, which played an important role in regulating milk secretion, but the mechanism was not clear, and no research reports
