Adverse maternal outcomes and associated factors among mothers of advanced age delivering at a tertiary hospital, southwestern Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of advanced age, defined as pregnant women aged ≥ 35 years at the time of giving birth, are traditionally known to be associated with increased risks of adverse maternal outcomes. We determined the prevalence of adverse maternal outcomes and associated factors among mothers of advanced age who delivered at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital (KRRH), in Southwestern Uganda. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Maternity Ward of KRRH from April to September 2023. We consecutively enrolled pregnant women aged ≥ 35 years during their immediate post-delivery perio

Postpartum onset anti-MDA5 antibody-positive clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis; case-based review of perinatal onset anti-MDA5 antibody-positive dermatomyositis.

Anti-melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) antibody positive clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis (CADM) is a subtype of inflammatory myopathy associated with a distinct clinical phenotype, characterized by rapidly progressing interstitial lung disease and limited muscle involvement. Although cases with onset of anti-MDA5 antibody positive CADM during pregnancy or the postpartum period are rare, they present unique challenges due to a potential pregnancy complications and the possible severity of the disease course. We present a case of anti-MDA5 antibody positive CADM that dev

Current concepts in postpartum anemia management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Postpartum anemia (PPA) is common in women after childbirth and affects about 50-80% of all women worldwide. Iron deficiency (ID) is the main cause for anemia and constitutes a potentially preventable condition with great impact on the mother's physical and mental condition after delivery. In most cases, PPA is associated with antenatal ID and peripartum blood losses. Numerous published studies confirmed the positive effect of PPA diagnosis and treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Iron deficiency as well as iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are common in the postpartum period and represe

Assessment of Organ Dysfunction and Underlying Causes in Maternal Near-miss Cases at Health Care Facilities in Doiwala Block of District Dehradun - A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: The extent of maternal morbidity is a good gauge of a nation's maternal health care system. Maternal near-miss (MNM) cases need to be reviewed because they can indirectly contribute significantly to reducing the maternal mortality ratio in India. MNM cases can provide useful information in this context. Such women who survive these life-threatening conditions arising from complications during pregnancy, childbirth and post partum (42 days) share many commonalities with those who die because of such complications. AIM: To assess the organ dysfunction and the underlying causes, as

Catatonic postpartum paternal depression as a first debut of a bipolar disorder: a case report.

Paternal postpartum depression (PD) is considered an affective disorder that affects fathers during the months following childbirth. Interestingly, it has been observed that during these months the chances of a male parent suffering from depression are double that for a non-parent male counterpart. We present the case of a 34-year-old man with no relevant medical history in who, overlapping her daughter's birth, several depressive symptoms emerged, such as fatigue, lack of concentration, sleeping disturbances and abandonment of care of the newborn. Prior to consultation, patient refused to eat
